@@TheRealRichardWong loved the video and in depth review but I am kinda disappointed in the S1 which I was considering replacing my G9 with. 1.5X crop in 4k 60 makes me sad and removing the fully articulated screen also disappointed me. I was hoping this would be everything the G9 was but with a full frame sensor. I'll keep the G9 for a while longer.

Seriously thinking of buying the S1. I would much prefer a tilting screen to a fully articulated one for my type of photography. That tri-axis tilt (a la Fuji) looks ideal to me. The lenses are a bit on the expensive side, but much depends on how they perform.

Sigma's ART primes are releasing, too, and they're obviously amazing value. Plus there are first-party (i.e. 100% compatibility) adaptors if you wish to use your current SLR or rangefinder lenses: EF (2019), M, R, PL, SA (2019). And some third-party adaptors from Novoflex and Kipon. Sigma announced the EF-L adaptor (+14 primes + new m/l line) at Photokina kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7qDnt1o0s2bln0.html and stated during the interview with Imaging Resource that they had upgraded the L mount protocols specifically to assure performance with Sigma ART/Sports lenses www.imaging-resource.com/news/2018/10/02/sigma-interview-photokina-2018-ceo-kazuto-yamaki-give-peek-l-mount-alliance

Great video as always I been thinking of buying the S1 but I'm concerned whether it's an upgrade from my G9 apart from low light performance and shallow depth of field. What's your thoughts???
@Gynra
@Gynra 5 жыл бұрын
The S1R is obviously an upgrade in terms of number of pixels, but only you can really decide whether the advantages of full frame outweigh those of micro four-thirds. I have the G9, and I'm seriously thinking of getting the S1, even though it is only a 4 Mpx improvement in terms of resolution. As you say, one has better control over depth of field with the larger sensor, and around a two stop better noise performance at high ISOs. I don't do video, so those features are of no interest to me.
@justyjust
@justyjust 5 жыл бұрын
@@Gynra the G9 also has better stabilization which I can say I use a lot, I can easily get a Sharp 1.3sec handhold. I think the S1 would be the one I would buy but I will need to compare the images.
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 5 жыл бұрын
If you shoot photos only, the high ISO (or just overall improvement) image quality is well worth the upgrade. But it's not cheap and the camera is also a lot more heavier than your G9. So maybe give it a try in real world , hold it in your hand and see if you can live with the extra weight and size?

With the AF response when an external screen is attached, could that just be the camera assuming video shooting and deliberately smoothing out focus changes?
@TheRealRichardWong

Hi Clint I do not know the exact reason for sure. My assumption is because it needs to output HDMI, so it needs to drop the display and hence processing frame rate to match the output. But I could be wrong

On the nose / touchpad issue - I have the same problem (making the focus area change size rather than move) and the cause is clear. On the G9 and GH5, about 1cm of space on the back left is used for the flippy screen hinge. But on the S1, the screen goes much closer to the edge so is bigger and so your nose touches it. I think a firmware update to provide an on/off switch for multi-finger gesture when in shooting mode would be useful.

Excellent review/comparison, Richard! As a landscape and product photographer currently using a Fuji X-System X-T3, I am strongly considering a move to FF, specifically either the Lumix S1 or the Nikon Z6, which I understand you have both. As I'm a sharpness and detail fanatic, especially in my large prints, can you please tell me if the Panasonic 24-105 f/4 combined with the S1 (possibly in High Resolution Mode) would be sharp enough to produce a very sharp and detailed 30" x 40" print? Also, can you recommend a good Macro lens (for the S1) for small product photography? Or, would the 24-105 f/4 at optimum aperture, be sufficient for this as well? Thank you!
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, I was going to reply to the comment you left on the other video but can't find it for some reason. Anyway, the S1 would be better for product and landscape photography because of the high resolution mode. Sorry can't answer question whether it's sharp enough for 30" x 40" print, as "sharp enough" for me might not be the same for you. But it will be definitely a lot sharper than what your X-T3 can output especially in high res mode. The 24-105 would be a great semi-macro choice but if you don't mind doing manual focus yourself, I would recommend you check out the macro lenses from Laowa. They make some really great macro lenses and my understanding is they have just released L-mount version for quite a few of their lenses so definitely check them out! www.venuslens.net/

Marian Kotúč yes that’s the question. How soon will sigma be releasing lenses for this. And what will they cost? Probably more expensive than the Sony mount versions, I’d guess. True there are some Leica lenses but most are manual focus and like you said they are pricy.

The exposure compensation on my Em1 mark 2 is indeed better implemented. Which is about the only better implementation Oly has to my mind btw...Best review to date and Richards reviews are always one of the best.FF is not for me. I have a D800e and well...to me the difference is there for sure on one hand but it is rather small compared to my Oly Em1 mark 2. These Panny cams are large and that simply means that their mFT will continue to exist since they must have figured out that if you want smaller you get a GX9 or Gh5 or so. If you do not mid size too much these will do. Expensive? I do not feel the S1 is expensive at all as compared to the competition. Build quality is topnotch, EVF is topnotch, weathersealing is the best out there. great IBIS. Too bad though that Panny is seems to be so addicted to its CDAF AF system. It is on one hand quite a feat and it is good but it is simply not up to Sony's AF. OSPDAF is needed for as long a DFD does not cut it I feel.

Thank you! My conversation with Panasonic tells me they are definitely continuing their development of m43 camera products. But (my own interpretation) understandably a lot of their resources will move to the full frame system in the near future as they got a pretty aggressive lenses roadmap. Re DFD Vs Hybrid AF, yes right now the hybrid one still has advantages but also remember a lot of the advance development such as AI base algorithm are not rely on phase detection system and that will get interesting as it's more and more relying on computational and machine learning algorithms as it's very close to the basics of DFD system. Analysis image and use the result to drive the autofocus system. I am still waiting for the final firmware to come and see how is the continuous autofocus performance.

Richard - Your examples of the S1 vs the Z6 are VERY important. (possibly more than you realize) It has been speculated that Panasonic would be using the IMX410 sensor that is used on the Nikon Z6 and A&-III. (This is a fact on these cameras) However, your video clearly shows there is a strong performance gap between the S1 and Z6. This could lead many of us to believe this is NOT a Sony BSI sensor after all! Since last year, Samsung has been shipping it's IsoCell technology sensors to a "Japanese client" but will not say who. Your examples might be our FIRST indication that this Samsung rumor "could" be correct! It's still very hard to say and we wont know for sure until Tech Insights X-ray's the S1 sensor and reveals who makes it. I think you are on to something here! You have the only channel right now that compares this mystery S1 sensor to Sony's BSI IMX410. Can you please post additional S1 vs Z6 footage in another new post? This is big news in the sensor world! If this IS a Samsung sensor?,... this would be the first major "crack" in Sony SemiConductor's armor and their dominant EXMOR technology that we have seen in recent years.

Plus, does TowerJazz have a foundry that can fab this many S1 and S1R sensors a month?

@@TheRealRichardWong - Yes,...I'm an admitted Sony fanboy that just pre-ordered the S1..lol. For years Sony has dominated sensor technology and fab. They own dozens of major architecture patents that draw companies to fab with them to gain access to those patents. "If" (BIG "if") this really is a new Samsung IsoCell (non BSI) sensor that is REALLY beating the IMX410 BSI chip,...this is big news! Your comparison footage is something that even Sony SemiConductor themselves would be interested in! If this is NOT a Sony sensor, they want to know where is comes from and WHY it beats their prized IMX410! Please, if you can, take your comparison footage and make a longer more comprehensive look at the Z6 and S1. 400% side by side crops would be great as KZfaq compression sucks. I'm sure you will get many views from Sony SemiConductor engineers! If this is NOT a Sony sensor than it has broken Sony's monopoly. We dont know yet, this is all speculation, absolutely. But your test footage is REAL and not gossip. More people need to see this. Thanks for having the foresight to put these two sensors head to head!

@@clifftotten7609 Just asked Richard a similar question. Looks like the S1 has around a 2-stop advantage at video over the Z6 but it's a non-moving subject so they could be employing some kind of frame averaging rather than a new sensor.

you can checkout my other video i did some vlogging test at the end: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fL1-mryKmMjKnas.html but yes i don't think it's a great camera for vlogging because of the size of the body/lens and no flip out/fully articulated screen. you say this camera is not designed for high end video, and you say the GH5 is highend. Well you need to look at this in detail - because when they release the paid upgrade and this baby can do true V-Log in 10bit, 422, it will blow the GH5 out of the water, the sensor is also redesigned, with better colour science, so i feel its incorrect to say it will do lesser quality then the GH5 .using true V-Log and a better sensor, it will in my opinion offer fantastic video quality. hope thats helpful.

Hi @@shawnsteuer9951 the S1 can do full width 4k at 30p, it is only cropped when 60p is used. Also, Yes, your right the GH5 can do 10bit 422, but the GH5 cannot do 10bit, 422, in VLOG, and this was my point, the point that true full VLOG (same as one used in the variflex cinema cameras) - will give you a better quality of picture and colour than the GH5. I think the GH5 is a great camera, but im just saying the S1 should give better quality when using the true VLOG from Panasonic - also the S1 should be able to do full raw, in 12bit to an atoms ninja 5, same as the Nikon Z6 later this year.. all these facts I believe make the S1 a better option for video, -- plus some people also prefer full frame.. although I agree it doesn't make a huge difference.. anyway, hope that helps and wishing you a great day! :)

Just an alternative point of view on the button placement. I nearly always shoot manual, so don't care about the compensation button, and I manually set my white balance. I hope Panasonic don't change the button positions based on one photographer's feedback. I'm disappointed that one of the advantages of FF - more light on the sensor - is negated by the release of f4 zooms. The 50mm is ridiculously expensive. As the owner four Lumix cameras, I was looking forward to the release of S1 to replace my Canon 5D Mark III, but the slow lenses and prohibitive prices relative to the Sony ecosystem make the A7IIII seem more attractive. Good review.

Camera appears to be very impressive accept it is too large and heavy to be a good choice for street and travel for both still and video, too low FPS to be a good choice for sport or nature and has the ergonomics, esthetics and sex appeal of a hypo. I, honestly can not think of a photo area this camera would be a "best" for. Lastly, lenses available for this camera are either very expensive or very heavy compared to their peers. If given this camera, the first things I would do is rasp and sand every edge so as to avoid finger cuts and purchase a back brace. The idea of removing mirrors for the advantages of electronic view finders has clearly been thrown away by Panasonic.

On my G9 the rubber gets loose (SD card door & thumb grip) after 5 month and only 1000 photos in best studio / home condition. Panasonic will not cover the repair costs of 173 Eur although the glue was forgotten already in factory and my camera is only one of a lot of others. I will now get my camera unrepaired back. I will sell my whole Panasonic equipment and wished your chanel will also have a look on the long term quality. Made in China with a non functional quality gate.
