Another fantastic review. Thank you! I'm not a professional photographer, so I'm sticking to Micro 4/3. The image quality, low light performance and shallow depth of field with inexpensive fast primes are more than adequate for my needs. The S1 is a gigantic cinderblock by comparison at many times the price of my little GX and GF cameras. But hey, that's just me.

I love your demo images MH. From your review I gather that the camera is of the highest professional level, something Cannon and Nikon might not be able to say of their first foray in to mirrorless Full Frame. A recent reviewer was saying that despite the obvious quality, the camera is a very slow seller and at this rate, this may very well be Panasonic first and last venture into FF, that would be a shame. Those sentiments reminds me of the Pentax KI, premium quality but very few takers! Thanks MH, your reviewers are of the highest quality and I am buying.

Thanks for the very detailed review. It’s greatly appreciated. For stills, can I get a full 24mp image in full silent mode or is it limited to the 18 mp 6k mode only? Also, every focus mode seemed extremely slow in your tests. Is that typical of real words use for stills? I’m also very curious about low light focus for weddings etc. Any views on that?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
In silent mode, the single mode stills are recorded at full 24Mp. I don't remember trying it, but the standard continuous mode is (according to the manual) compatible with the silent setting. The 4/6K burst modes are silent, but at the lower resolution..

I've also fantasized about voice control. While lens adapters make it possible to use a wider variety of lenses, it's a compromise that's less than ideal. The large opening available here will work best with a lens designed for that purpose.

Hi Maarten. Thank you for your superbly detailed review of this awesome camera! Regarding one of your comments "I think that fashion and landscape would be happier with the A7RIII or the Z7 - I'm not sure that 24Mp has a chance.", as a landscape and product photographer who only ocassionally creates large (30" x 40") poster prints, I am wondering why you dismiss this S1 as a landscape camera, especially with the "High Resolution Mode" option? For my work, I believe the stellar image quality with the 24MP S1, the 24-105 f/4 (and other excellent Lumix S Pro lenses, is more than sufficient, and the "High Resolution Mode" is the main reason I think this would work as a landscape camera. (Currently I can't see a need for the 47MP of the S1R or Z7, much less the "High Resolution Mode" 198MB files of the S1R.) 24MP and the available 98MB files are more than enough for me, and likely, other "landscape" photographers who don't require ultra-large files. Thanks again, sir!
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 3 жыл бұрын
I did not dismiss, I was asked to compare and suggested the camera that I thought would be best. to add context to that comment - if you are making a living selling high quality work to a demanding client base who pay at a rate that allows you to be a full time photographer, then yes, the full frame, high resolution cameras are the best tools for your work. That is particularly true for fashion and landscape/architecture work. However, I'm sure that many fine landscape images have been taken at this and lesser resolutions. However, as those super resolutions are available, I'm positive they will provide better results. High Resolution Mode is a parlour trick, too complicated and limited. Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated.

Great review. The lack of A9 sports photography capability will keep the S1 from being an allrounder but I could see fashion and landscape shooters eating this up. Curiously, I also think it lends support to its M43 line, rather than competition. I could see a pro (with the cash) sporting one of these or the S1r accompanied by the GX9. With Sony ignoring adding lenses to their APSc line, Panasonic fills more camera slots than most, again except for the sports photog. If you are a dedicate Leica lens users, then every camera you own could be fitted with one.

Always appreciate your kind words, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. I think that fashion and landscape would be happier with the A7RIII or the Z7 - I'm not sure that 24Mp has a chance. The SR1 maybe, but while Panasonic certainly has its fans, it remains a less than mainstream choice. It may well be some great Leica lenses that elevate this camera above that noise. However Nikon is moving quickly with Z lenses ...

I tried the 24-90mm and did a quick comparison with the Panasonic kit lens and enjoyed the Leica lens more. It did seem that the Panasonic was quicker with autofocus, but I had a hard time autofocusing using video in low light compared to the Leica when fully zoomed in. I bought the S1 (for video) and was very pleased with the IQ and color--the best I've ever had from Panasonic---and I've owned a lot of them. (Still got my GH5 and G85). But I sold the S1 after only a few months. Why? First of all, that wonderful EVF cannot be adjusted to focus for my eyes---the first time that's ever happened. Every other camera I've owned enabled me to adjust the diopter so I could see very well. I had to buy a third party eye cup and epoxy a magnifier over it to make the EVF usable. But worst of all the Peaking is a disaster---very different from the GH5. I was shocked! Acquiring the focus with peaking is fine--the feature is robust and clear, but as soon as you begin rolling a clip that robust peaking all but vanishes, making it really difficult (and in some cases impossible) to track an object or subject. And the flatter the profile the more invisible the peaking becomes...AFTER you begin rolling. Since I always shoot fully manual I rely a great deal on the peaking for tracking and for focus pulling of still objects/subjects. Speaking to the Panasonic Rep in my area he was just short of rude, defensive, incredulous, and offered little hope this peaking "problem" would be addressed---saying it was a matter of processing. I've heard that cock and bull story before, and I deeply resent being lied to. "Lack of processing power" seems to be a standard line for camera reps. Don't tell me when you shoot fully manual and consequently unburden that all processing power required for the constant operation of the automatic features you're NOT using that you can't get decent peaking because "there's not enough processing power." There's enough processing power in the G85...and the GH4. To quote Ricky Ricardo, "Wha Hoppen, Luchie?!?" To repeat, that's the ultimate cock and bull story. So I ask, though Panasonic of all people should know, when did they forget that when you're shooting video you need your focus and exposure features to be FULLY operative, not just until, but AFTER you press the shutter and start rolling?!? The failure of peaking for tracking made the S1 virtually unusable for me. Very disappointing, because it was otherwise a terrific camera. Really sad. Alas, if only Nikon can fix the intermittent jello in the Z6 IBIS--I'll have sufficient consolation.

Thanks for the detailed notes, always good to have your comments and experience. Sorry to hear about the diopter setting - it was sufficient for my prescription, although it was at the limit. I wouldn't buy the processing power either - this camera has amazing stabilization which really requires power. Maybe they're making some odd trade-off. I also found it unusual that the zebra disappears while the ISO is adjusted.

@@MaartenHeilbron Stabilization was GREAT! Vanishing Peaking, auflösenden Zebras---I got it; "We don't have it due to processing issues" means "We really didn't think that issue out like we should have." So many things lost in translation.

Right. Post-rationalization explanations always leave me cold. Some media type tries to explain something without discussing it with the engineers, who all on their own don't often divulge their real reasons.

Rembrandt models as Playmobil figures? I wonder what will be next. It took me a bit of detective's work to find out who the couple in black were: Marten Soolmans and his wife Oopjen Coppit. (You might have provided the information; I'm not sure how many of your fans have much knowledge in this department). About the camera: Very impressive in many ways, but the focus often seems a tiny bit off, which I find worrying. And only 4 images can be blended in multiple exposure? My wonderful Canon Eos 70D can blend up to nine! (and in two different modes). I don't find it terribly important, though, as I must admit that I never actually blended more than two. But just a fun fact.

And I really expected your comment to help identify the mushroom! Very good detective work there - but I thought I did provided the clues needed to identify them - there's the photo of the paintings, then me with the large scale figures. I got a real kick out of your comment - thanks! Yes, focus really needs work. I know that contrast detect is slow, but it's not usually this unreliable. Four is more than average, but as you point out, less than the Canon feature. And I think your comment is spot on. If a photographer decides to blend images, it's likely in photoshop, not in camera. This is a feature that could use a little more thought or software development to make it interesting.

The mushroom is what we call a Morkel in Danish - Morchella Esculenta in Latin. According to Roger Phillips it's Morel (or Morille) in English. Edible and allegedly very delicious, although I've never found one.
@skakdosmer
@skakdosmer 5 жыл бұрын
But look out for the somewhat similar, but poisonous False Morel (Gyromitra Esculenta) which is also considered delicious, but only edible after special treatment, and even then occasionally lethal. (So there's a meal to die for...)

Hey Maarten. Amazing review. Quick question....I do a lot of weather video stuff and been in need of a new camera since my RX100M3 broke. I mean I also just casually film other stuff like demolition derbies, etc for fun. You can see my weather videos as a quick look on my YT for an idea for what I do. Been leaning between this S1 and the A7 III for mostly video but photo too. Like a 80/20 ratio for video and photo. What would you mainly recommend between these two? I seen your candle test as an idea for video at night and what may give me a feel for storm + general filming at night on a full frame camera. Granted I believe the continuous autofocus will probably be better on the A7 III....unless this being a year newer this S1 has better focusing. Would you say the continuous autofocus for video on the S1 to be pretty solid now or just...."stick with the A7 III on that front". Oh and I am sure this S1 is weather sealed like a tank compared to the A7 III. Kind of a tough call but any input you have would be amazing. Thanks. :D
