Great review and radio. Mine draws only 18 m.a. current on M.W and S.W.. Cheap zinc-carbon D last a long time. This radio was designed for regional S.W. stations snd M.W. in third world countries. Much better than a digital read out, battery hog radio. Excellent design over all. All componets are discreet type, not the surface mount type. Easy to repair any where on the planet!

I just got mine. Fantastic reception ❗️ The RF-562DD has a DC input for sell-wart. This is NOT a DSP radio, but rather full analog. $50.oo seems a bit steep but it’s a fantastic little DXer. 📻🙂

This radio works surprisingly well, especially when optimally aligned. After extending AM coverage to (U.S.) 1725 kHz, I added two small capacitors to reduce what to my ears was excessive "hissiness." I use the radio almost everyday, and after adding the two capacitors it very closely resembles vintage National Panasonic models. Sometimes I wish it included full shortwave coverage from 2.300 MHz to 22 MHz (13 meters) since 11 meters is a "dead band." I does include all the "practical" shortwave bands since we don't get much broadcast activity below 60 meters or above 16 meters. The Sony ICF-J40 does include full coverage, but the Panasonic (after adding the capacitors), sounds better to my ears.

I bought this model because it's similar to a childhood radio, but this one has FM; the older radio had medium wave and shortwave only. Its performance is better than I expected, it's very sensitive and reasonably selective. I was able to listen to stations 5 kHz apart. As you mentioned, it wasn't designed for our market so I had to extend its AM coverage to 1730. This covers the expanded AM band with a little room to spare. I was surprised to pickup a weather station on 1710 kHz (Queens NY); the signal was very weak but clearly audible. There was a more powerful station on 1700 kHz. I was also surprised to find out that this radio uses audio transformers; it has an "old fashioned" audio section. The rest appears to be standard; one 9 pin SIP IC, one 18 pin DIP IC and 5 discrete transistors. Some of these transistors are obviously used for the audio section, but I didn't study the circuitry any further. A pleasant surprise was to see that the ferrite bar is also active on shortwave; this is a major feature for me because I'm surrounded by "electrical pollution." Since the "loopstick" is sensitive to the magnetic portion, I can hear signals that are almost impossible when using whip antennas (the loopstick is still directional on shortwave).

Panasonic added a power port on the right side recently.

Looks great. It is available on amazon india for 50$ which I feel is pricey. But the looks are worth every penny, they should have included metal body because the finish of the case looks like regular plastic that you find in the 10 to 15 usd philips radio

How you see the Akai Portable shortwave radios? I don't think they have a specific model number but they've been turning up in my searches for shortwave radios on eBay. More or less the same price as Panasonic. It's retro styled like this one but it has rounded clock-like tuning dial.

I purchased the Texan are 9012 and have found reception to be absolutely dreadful; I’m in New York City so that might be a big part of it but I think I’ll try the Panasonic to see if it makes a difference
