I love watching the technical detail in this video as well as your others. Even though I do not use Panasonic or Sony, the information is still useful and meaningful to me. This allows me to look at what I have and get an idea how it stacks up to others and what to look for. Time and time again, I get useful information even though what I shoot with may not be the subject of your review. This is how good your channel is. You can review a product not related to what someone uses, but the information can be applied to any similar product and allow a user to make intelligent choices or decisions on what they want to work with. Great job. Also, thank Julie for continuing to help make your channel successful. Thanks again.

Nice video as usual Gerald! Also, Richard Wong tested the v1.2 autofocus a week ago, at normal frame rate, the S1 does a bit better than previously. but when he switched to 60fps, it becomes so much better like another camera! He also tested the autofocus with many different type of movements too and repeatedly walking, running, pop in, hold still, slow movement. Check that one if anyone is interested in more in-depth autofocus test.

Hi Gerald! Thanks for your amazing reviews! I have the S1H and I am learning to shoot with V-LOG. I have purchased the Leeming LUTs and I will apply the ETTR principles in my next shoots. Zebras are already set to 90% (95 seems a little too high). For darker scenes, I will use HLG and set sharpness and NR to -5, as recommended by Leeming. That's a lot of testing and it surely takes some time to get intuitive with V-LOG and HLG. But a good LUT will be essential for a quicker workflow. So thanks for the Leeming tip! I heard that Standard Profile with sharpness and NR to -5 can produce good results for darker scenes as well. Oh dear ... so much testing ahead. Cheers!

Great video! Looking at the 8bit Sony vs 10bit S1, I see that as another deciding factor. At this point, grading flat footage is incredibly popular and I see a HUGE advantage in being able to (mostly) avoid banding and color artifacts. You've proven that banding vs. no banding is visible in 8bit KZfaq video uploads (amazing!), and only one camera gives you an advantage here.

The S1 did remarkably well when filming in 60fps as seen in the comparison video from Richard Wong. Sure he wasn‘t using the same types of lenses for the A7 III and S1 but the face tracking of the S1 was even superior to the Sony when shooting 60fps.

@geraldundone
@geraldundone 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! I find with the Sony it's not like it loses focus completely and focuses on the background or something, but when it does have issues, it usually just drags a bit. As if it was a bit delayed in keeping up with the movement. Like you saw at 16:11. Turning up the focusing speed helps with this, but it can make it a bit too harsh for certain shots.

Cool video still to watch in 2022 (looking into the back catalog!) At 12:00, the color accuracy comments didn't age well however with the color patches, as expected not aligning on their Rec.709 gamut reference since V-Log is using V-Gamut primaries instead, therefore requires color space conversion. It seems like even in newer videos you are missing the colorspace conversion step which requires a matrix, only distorting the hue selectively, which can allow to align a few colors manually but get most of others off in the process.

Fantastic review, Gerald. The testing and evaluating the results must take a ridiculous amount of time. I hope people who see these episodes appreciate all the work they took. I sure do. Ergo and flexibility are my choice. If I never saw autofocus again I wouldn't miss it. I guess it has its place, but I"m not there. I'm really looking forward to getting the upgrade. Kind of miffed that shooters in the EU get the upgrade free and EARLY--while we here in the states have to pay and get it late.

@@geraldundone Yes. I actually got it "free" with my purchase of the S1--from B&H. (I purchased it only about a month or two ago). Of course, B&H will be sending the code out at the determined time---so nothing to do but wait. But those who purchased early will have to pay for the upgrade---indeed many already have, and they, like myself, are waiting for the code. It can't come soon enough. I'm tired of shooting in like rec. 709 and Cinelike D. Wonder what we did to get such special treatment?!?

We know the A7-III uses the Sony IMX410 sensor. We also know that Sony has it for sale on the open market. We also know that Nikon buys it for their Z6. I would bet my wife that the S1 is also using the IMX410 sensor too. Panny has no problem buying Sony sensors at all. (GH5=IMX272 and GH5S = IMX299) If it's not the "exact" IMX410, then it's a sister BSI chip with the phase detect dual photosite grid removed. Fantastic video Gerald!

Regardless, it is always good to keep an eye on this company. I just hope there will be a good adapter from Sony E lenses to L, and Canon EF to L. Great stuff, I found that af-on near/shift is great to avoid initial hunting when you know if the new focus point are closer or more far. Works good on CANON 85mm 1.2 where the initially focus hunt otherwise can often be annoying when the camera don’t know in witch direction it should look for focus. I have the new af modes mapped to to front buttons and it will complement the normal af-on good when needed. Can imagine it will help with get more hit rates when subject is moving fast forward too in af-c. Also the af is super fast on the new Panasonic 50mm 1.4, much better then24-105. And like others have pointed out that af-c in video 60p works better then 24p. I feel af in video are very solid with Panasonic 50/1.4. Keep the good work up, cheers

You nailed the concept of the Sony colors. (right before the 13:00 mark) People, after years of seeing Canon footage, just aren't used to the more accurate, for lack of a better explanation, colors on the Sony. I'm still watching after 2 years lol. Lumix did a phenomenal job with organomics, EVF resolutions, and stabilization. The decision to stick with contrast AF is where they went wrong. I suppose that's probably the toughest part of developing a new line of cameras. It took Sony several generations to get it right, and with the new Nikon Z9 (I hope you make a vid using that beast), it took Nikon 3 generations. I think Panasonic has a chance to at least be a 4th option amongst the 3 giant camera companies if they decide to ditch their current AF system. They have video and stabilization down already, so having eye and face direction would definitely make it a very interesting option for pros and semi-pros out there. There's always room for those that want to not follow the crowd.

Your tests are the best! Even if i don't own a Panasonic S1 I just have to watch your videos. Just to bring me up to date in the camera world. I own a A73 but im still not 100% happy with it. The worst is the low light performance compared to the A6500. The A6500 outperformed my A73 in low light in every picture profile (noise & AF). I cant explain myself. Maybe you can? :)

Hi Gerald, thanks for the super helpful information. Question for you: given the nature of contrast based autofocus, do you think it is possible to fully solve the problem of focus hunting on this camera? I have been pondering this for weeks because I wish that Panasonic could figure out a way to fix this issue and perfect the S1. Since contrast based autofocus works by the process of checking focus against itself by going out of focus, could it be forever doomed with this problem.? What do you think? Is there hope that one day contrast auto focus will be reliable? (anyone else please feel free to comment as well:)

I wish you had done an IBIS comparison when shooting video, especially when the camera is in motion: handheld panning, tilting, some combo of the two, and walking while shooting video. Looking at GH5 vs A7III IBIS comparisons, there is a huge difference in IBIS performance when the camera is in motion, so it would have been great to have this confirmed when comparing the S1 and the A7III.
@geraldundone
@geraldundone 4 жыл бұрын
The IBIS between the S1 and a7 III is not worth comparing. I demonstrated the IBIS in my previous review, it's on a whole 'nother level compared to the a7 III. The S1 is very similar to the GH5 in this regard. Sony IBIS isn't that helpful for video, imo.
@SewTubular
@SewTubular 4 жыл бұрын
@@geraldundone I think it's always worth comparing because many people will mistakenly assume that ALL 5-axis IBIS is the SAME, when they are not at all. So it's always helpful to remind people that there is a huge difference with IBIS from different brands. Compare it the same way you would autofocus. because good IBIS makes shooting handheld footage so easy. No tripod or monopod, just pick up the camera and shoot.

I know this is an older video, but hope you don't mind me asking a question or two. In terms of dynamic range, the bottom line is that while they are similar, in V Log your main benefit is going to be avoiding banding in the sky, and the main advantages of SLOG are a bit better color accuracy and a bit better highlight retention. But in terms of overall usable dynamic range in numbers of stops, there isn't a clear winner, correct? Thanks in advance.

Hi Gerald, first of all great comparison! Have you seen Richard Wong's comparison of both cameras. He did the talking head and jumping into frame video tests and found that the new firmware with higher framerates resulted in drastically improved performance. Comparing 24p 4k to 24p 4k on both sony and pansonic he found the Sony to perform better but the S1 to be much improved over prior versions. He had a theory that bumping to a higher framerate, allowed the DFD algorithm to sample the sensor faster and result in better focus tracking. when increasing the frame rate, the Panasonic was noticeably superior (in my opinion anyway) to the Sony and the results were not at all what I was expecting. While the S1 uses a 4k 60p crop area it still demonstrates the potential. Even for those of us shooting 1080p where the S1 may actually have the better video performance. Regardless it's great to see the improvements both Sony and Panasonic are putting into their AF systems. Worth checking out his video :)

If you wanted the cleanest footage in extreme low light what would be better, a Sony a7siii with a T1.2 lens or a Sony a6500 with a full frame T1.2 lens and a speed booster? Is the A7sii's bigger sensor capable of using more than one stop more of light than the smaller APS-C sensor? It would also be super interesting to try a T1.2 medium format lens with the speed booster for sony full frame on the a7sii

Gerald, have you seen Richard Wong's video AF test on the latest S1 firmware from a few days ago? Interestingly, he found that at 60fps the performance was greatly improved and actually on a par with the A7iii at 4k60. Perhaps mainly of academic interest for most since you can't shoot 4k60 without a crop, but still an interesting result. It would be interesting to see if someone can replicate it.

@@VindicateMedia Right, whereas the S1 can but with a crop. So if you really need 4k at fullframe, you're limited to slower framerates either way, and Richard's results are not all that helpful. But if you only need 1080p or you can live with the S1 crop at 4k60, and if Richard's results turn out to be correct, it would appear that the S1 autofocus is now right up there with the Sony - again perhaps not useful in practice for most people, but this does seem to be actual news.

Basically the way I see it is that the advantage in IBIS outweighs the AF. At the end of the day, it is much easier to MF in a pinch and get a shot versus being always in focus but cannot fix the camera shake in post. Also Gerald, just to clarify - with the S1, if it handles highlight recovery more if you expose for the shadows (to avoid color shift), would it not make sense to have the Zebras set higher?
@geraldundone
@geraldundone 4 жыл бұрын
The zebras should be set to 85% so that you know when something is going to clip. Ideally, we'd want to set them to 88%, but that's not an option, so it's safer to stick with 85%. In my experience though, you can actually go 1/3 to 2/3rds of a stop beyond 85% and still be fine. But just be careful, and don't do that on skin.
