Panasonic S1R Review | A Flagship Camera

After a whole year of using the Panasonic S1R, I couldn't be more pleased with my decision to invest into the Panasonic S1R. It's absolutely an amazing stills camera for a high-end professional and an incredibly capable video camera for a professional videographer. While this camera is almost as good as it gets, there are a few quirks which I discuss in the video as well. This is my honest review of the Panasonic S1R and my experience with it over the past year.

Got one used with battery grip, extra battery + cfcard for 1500 USD, about 6k exposures only. This beast is hugely underpriced second hand, its nuts

I am planning to soon give up on video production as it's getting to hard for me to do. So I aim to sell my gear and get the S1R and match it with my current S5 then I plan to stick to doing photography for a hobby. So can't wait to get my hand on the 47 megapixel sensor🙂

Jeremy Neipp Creative I love it! I recently got it and it’s been interesting and challenging getting used to all the new functions especially coming from a canon t7 but it provides such good quality and pairing it with the lumix f1.8 85m just was outstanding. I’m glad I saved up for this

Coupled with the best glass, such as top Leica, and in the HD mode, its the best camera in the world for resolution!

Jeremy, the new S 5 auto focus is across the S series via firmware. Great video....I just purchased the new BGH1 and the auto focus with a pro lens is spectacular. All the best Roland

That's awesome! And thanks for the compliment. Personally I still wasn't impressed with the autofocus with the firmware update though, but just my opinion. The BGH1 looks like a pretty sweet camera though, what are your thoughts on how it works compared to other Panasonics?

It’s not just XQD but CF Express slot, latest and greatest. Overall if I need to buy a new camera in 2022 it will be the same S1R, absolutely fantastic camera in any aspect.

The firmware update for filming 5k 30p has been something I've used more of recently, it truly is an amazing device

I was looking for a video like this for this camera. I'm not to worried about the autofocus too much because I don't do video much. This has pushed me toward taking this camera more seriously. I'm using a canon T3i now so this camera will be a big time upgrade for me.

That’s awesome! Glad I could help push you towards this camera, especially if AF isn’t huge to you, my review is honest and the camera is an amazing investment. Good review, but can i ask if the atomos Ninja or Blackmagic can be used with S1R? I need a recommend ex recorder for my S1R

The price is similar now to a GFX50s... On the 2nd hand market at least in Australia. What's your suggestions for still photo?

I think its even better at stills than it is video obviously, I think it's a really solid buy if you have the money! Personally for the price point, unless AF is extremely important to you, I don't think you can find a much better camera for the price.

haha yes most definitely, I just read it quickly as vlog haha. Yes you can shoot v-log but you have to pay for the firmware update.

Nice video ! Personnally I don't care that much about color profile because it can be fixed in editing but I definitely regret the "size" of the Sony A7III, I prefer the feeling I get holding my G9. But between a better grip and a way better autofocus my choice is made haha. But I haven't mastered manual focus like you so that might be why haha.

Haha most definitely, thanks for your input! Yea the feel is so weird on a Sony but they definitely have mastered their autofocus, something Panasonic needs to step up in!

Disagree about autofocus. *It is very decent.* Most issue with autofocus is a user. There are plenty setting and adjustments, depends on lens etc. But in general for photo I didn’t have any issues ever. 95/100 photos with razor sharp images it’s damn amazing rate. Most people could be complain about video continuous autofocus, but “unfortunately” it is not bad as well......and most video wave of disinformation came from early 3 years old reviews with the first firmware. (And even the it was not bad at all)

Dude, I’m not trying to paint Panasonic a bad name, I genuinely love the company and they are my favorite… but there is no denying that their autofocus is way behind 😂😂 if you’ve used any other flagship camera from a different company even once you’ll know what I mean. It’s not “disinformation” and I’m not a conspiracy reviewer lol. I love Panasonic cameras

Great info, thanks. The S1r screen was a weakness for me... The fully articulating GH5 design was super for all purposes. Doing loads of adventure filming I need that flexibility. But the GH5 stills don't cut the mustard... I just want one perfect camera! Wouldn't it be nice when/if we can order custom cameras with all the features we need for what we do?

Haha I wish we could do that! Honestly, except for vlogging, I have come to much more appreciate the type of screen the S1R has since it never gets in the way, and it is much quicker to flip out... however, for vlogging the GH5 camera definitely is better.
