You really make a good point about camera size, cold weather photography and gloves. So many of us live in climates that are covered in snow for 5 months of the year. Being able to use a camera with gloves on will mean the difference between being able to use the camera in cold weather or not shooting at all.

I like Panasonic's color science, very nice natural colors. I like Canon's colors as well. I had seen Sony only online pictures and don't like colors at all. It's personal opinion, but I prefer 5/100 missing autofocus and 95/100 great sharp pictures with natural colors, instead of 100/100 perfectly in focus with shitty colors :)

If you know how to edit you can edit the "color science" very easily in photography by editing the rgb values, saving it as a preset and foundation. As for video especially working with davinci you can edit this even easier. I really don't think "color science" should be even remotely a factor for buying anything in modern day, or any day since lightroom came out with the rgb values years ago.

Totally disagree with: 1) Power button is in good place, never had any issues or discomfort. 2) 2xSD doesn't make sense, CF Express have almost identical price and have instead of 300Mb/s V90..... CFE = 1200-1400 Mb/s. For video it does not matter much, but for clear buffer at 47Mp continuous - it does. I have CFE and used as well cheap SD UHS-I card as extra storage (and have no issue with UHS-I, just slow). So you can mix ultra fast expensive card and "backup" option to use slower but *very cheap* big volume card. So, you can use XQD, CFE type B, SD UHS-I, SD UHS-II - plenty of options. And again, with almost identical price of CFE type B compared to UHS-II, but *write speed* 3x-4x, it no doubt that people will prefer.

I bought into the LUMIX S and L mount alliance because for me I was future proofing, I knew that I would be satisfied with this system for the long term, I’ve owned a S1R for close to 16 months now and have no regrets, neither do I long for anything that the S1R doesn’t have install for me as I grow into its functionality. I also know that it will take me a while before I master more than I haven’t on this camera but that was one of the attraction (future proofing). It’s more camera than most including me may ever need but we all know this no matter the system, other systems often fail at this and we end up trading up far to early, I just feel spoiled with this camera and not foiled. This is a strong system in more ways than just big and tough!

I’ve had the S1R since it came out. I love it. Autofocus for sports (motocross, downhill, whitewater kayaking) isn’t fast enough. Could be the lens though, I only have the 24-whatever so far. Hey Sulanto, thanks for the video! I'm a hybrid documentary shooter - I do a lot of portrait and event photo-stills but I also create a lot of video work. Do you think the S1R would be a good hybrid camera for me? Or would you tell me not to get excited about all the extra pixels in the S1R and go for the S1H? Because I have read that the S1R has pixel binning when shooting at 4k. But it also has only x1.09 crop on 4k.. and I like that

I think the S5 is a really good option, because it's so affordable and very capable. I think 24 Mp is enough for most photography, but of course more pixels are seldom a downside. Anyway, my choice of Lumix for hybrid work would be the S5.

Thank you for informative summary. Its close to a year since purchase of my s1r, no regrets, it's a very good piece of equipment, as for autofocus no problem in my daily use. S1r for fast sports and such, I would never buy it, it's just not that kind of camera, why would anyone buy it for sport photography it's beyond me. You want to shoot cats, pick up older ones, they are a bit slower. Lol... However, I have some issues with battery, they discharge themselves without usage. Charged battery left in the camera over few days or weeks loose charge rather alarmingly fast, can't say that about other camera brands I currently have. Puzzle, wifi, bt off, top status lsd off and still power slowly goes down. One setting I wish Panasonic would bring in firmware update is EVF +EYE. I use mostly EVF only, the thing is, it's stays on all the time. EVF is a rather heavy user of power, would be helpful to have it off while not looking through it. The other thing is, while in EVF only mode, if you press play to review images, well, it's stays in EVF mode, I think it should go to main display, for reviewing and settings, then back to EVF only. I had this combination on one of my cameras before, possibly X-pro2, not certain. Other then that, almost perfect. Thank you...

Thanks for sharing your experience. I haven't noticed any battery drain with my cameras, when they are powered off. I even have the top display on, so I can see the card and battery status when the power is off. It would make sense to be able to view the photos on the screen rather than the VF, regardless of the screen/VF setting.
@nasowas1654
@nasowas1654 3 жыл бұрын
If I understand your problem correct: I think EVF + EYE is possible. Leave the EVF in the automatic mode, and disable the display (by toggling with the 'DISP' button through modes). That even solves you playback problem.

Dear Matty, Many thanks for your usual most informative videos. @mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don't think there is any user selectable APS-C mode. You can just crop in post and get the same result. I may cover the teleconverter in the future, but meanwhile take a look at the manual, S1R page 129 and G9 page 150 (English manual).
@mujianxiuxi
@mujianxiuxi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Malcolm and Matti, APS-C is selectable, but it’s not straight forward: in menu “others(photo)1”, set EX. Tele Conv. to TELE CONV, which is super35mm/APS-C. Then, go to the picture size setting, now see that size M and S become exM and exS, remain on size L won’t activate APS-C, instead, choose exM size. One could assign the picture size switch to Q button, now switching between size L and exM represents the switching between FF and APS-C. If ExTeleConv. is off, picture size change won’t activate crop. Check the manual, there are more variations of crop ratio.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 3 жыл бұрын
@@mujianxiuxi You can use the EX Tele Conv. option, but it's only for jpeg, the RAW file is still 47Mp even though it will show the jpeg crop. So, if you'd like to have smaller RAW file size, the Ex Tele Conv. is not a real option. If you shoot jpeg, then it may work for you.

Thanks for the review. I have been using Panasonic cameras for many years and have never been worried about the AF. It works for me. I think canon and Sony have such great AF system that reviewers think everything needs to match up and if it doesn't it can't be useable. I've had my S1R for nearly 9 months and it's the only camera I've had that's taken a long time to get used to. It's also taken me a while to settle on the best editor for the files this produces - and that is DXO PhotoLab. It not only does an excellent job of rendering the standard files but also the hi-res pixelshift files. And it's fast too. My one gripe is the autofocus, but for the work I do it's not generally a problem.

I have the S1R since it came out, doing photo and video. From fashion to landscape photography, I have more fun than my canons. It s how the camera feel for you .. i personally hate sony they feel cheap to me.. I got the S1R because it is very close to the LEICA SL2 as far as sensor and look. My only complain, is the promised v-log for the S1R they said they'd have at the begining, and never got it. But .. I use a ninja v and the footage is fantastic.. The autofocus WORKS! but dumb rumors follow... its been fixed and a lot quicker in continuous. But you 'll always have the know it all that will think it s still a problem blah blah blah.. Great camera to me serving my purpose. like I said i couldn t afford the like and peripherals.. so I switched to Lumix S serie

My S1R landed four days ago. I was shocked to discover it's heavier than my 5Ds. I've bought used, on eBay. I hae the 20-60 and 50mm for it, and an adaptor for Canon EF lenses is on the way. I intend to use it mostly with TS-E lenses. They don't do AF, so that's not a concern. It's not as like the G9 as I expected. It's not that this system is bad, but Canon, Nikon or Sony do similar things with better AF while being smaller and lighter with a better lens selection. Because of this, the depreciation is very high, so you may be able to get some nice deals on it, at least that's how I got the S1 but I think I am going sell it as I don't need extreme durabiliy. With more lenses, better AF and a smaller form factor like the S5 (but with the EVF quality of the S1 series), they will be on the right track.

@@mattisulanto Good question. I’m a casual shooter. I might plan an epic shot or two throughout the year where I study the location compositionally, focal length, etc and return back for the good light. In that situation I avoid cropping in post. But the rest of my photography happen during road trips in the mountains where I shoot without planning and end up adjusting the composition in post. Of course I could improve on getting the composition right in camera but I’d hate not having flexibility in post when I need it.

My personal opinion: I think, Panasonic is smart/clever to have a second mainstay with MFT + FF. Unfortunately MFT sells not so much for years. It sinks down. Olympus has more or less give up. The market ist put on FF. But for me especially the Pana FF seems to big and heavyand the concentration only of contrast autofocus doesn't convince me, although I only had a Pana GX 8 formerly. In some videos I have seen, that Panasonic users do have problems with pumping autofocus. Could be or not - therefore it were smarter to choose another one for example Sony or Canon if you like FF. But: I don't have the money to invest in a second system next to my MFT. Nevertheless it is an interesting video of you👍
