Nice review! Curious, how are you able to adjust rolling shutter in NLE program you are using? Looks like Pr and I'm fairly sure Davinci Resolve does not have such a tool/plug-in. All the best to you!

Every camera nowdays should feature SSD recording. On a sidenote get a m2 nvme SSD in an external case - super small compared to big old SATA SSDs. And m2 SSDs are actually super cheap now. Wish we could have addon SSD grips like battery grips for these cams. Thanks for the review!

I don’t recommend using M.2 SSDs in enclosure for video recording, I’ve had a lot reliability issues with that in the past. “Readymade” external SSD is a safer choice. My pleasure!

Prores is mostly just a workflow format. It should be easier to edit and it also will have fewer compression artifacts. Prores RAW and Blackmagic RAW are RAW video formats, similar to RAW photos, but not quite as much flexibility. Still the latitude would be much higher for exposure (close to around 10 stops compared to 7 stops in compressed codecs. And WB can be altered completely. So it's a lot more flexible to shoot and not nearly as important to get exposure and WB right on camera. All Intra codecs are kept in the same compression enclosures (h.264, h.265) but their compression is done for each frame individually and not as a difference between two frames to put it very simply. It is also much easier to edit than GOP codecs.

Nice video once again! Question: I'm considering both the A7IV with 20-70mm f/4 and the S5ii with 20-60 f/3.5-5.6. Ofcourse other lenses as well, but this will be my primary lens. In terms of handling: How do you like the 20-60? Is the zooming smooth, build quality alright? I think with the sensors of these days low light should not be a problem for both and I will use a separate lens for portraits. Hope you can help me with this.

20-60 is an OK kit lens, but I wouldn't recommend it as the main lens for S5 II, it deserves something better. The handling is completely fine, I have no complaints.

Theoretically, the best performers would be the Leica-certified S PRO line (16-35; 24-70; 50 f/1.4; 70-200, both f/4 & f/2.8). They have a clutch and the best motors, tuning, coatings etc. The 24-105mmF4 is not an S PRO, but is well-regarded and a step up from the 20-60. Add an 18mm (built for video transitions) for the wide end. Sigmas are less tuned for video, but the 50mmF1.4 DG DN and 60-600mm DG DN have new motor systems which improve smooth transitions.

Look at how much the original S5's price has fallen - I'm pretty sure you won't need to wait THAT long. As soon as a successor is released, the price of the S5 II X tanks - like was the case with teh S5.

@@TheHybridShooter According to the S5II manual "The color depth of RAW images recorded with this camera is 14 bits. This is limited to 12 bits during burst recording, however." (page 121) The wording of the manual implies this applies to all burst modes. Have you experienced otherwise?

It would be great if cameras allow for ssd instead of SD - CF cards. A short M.2 ssd can be small enough to be inserted in a camera slot, and would be way faster than any card. A 2230 or 2248 would be small enough, for larger cameras even the 2280. The heat could be a problem.

Are you sure the sensor in the S5ii and X variant are actually backside illuminated? Most spec sheets list it as a simple CMOS sensor (including the officially Panasonic spec sheet)

@@TheHybridShooter sounds good, do you have a source for this information as a regular CMOS vs BSI CMOS does make quite a big difference for sensor readout speeds (which would make me question why the S5ii sensor has a relatively low readout speed, which is what makes the 4k60p impossible in FF mode). @@mattshalash The source is Panasonic specs sheets from Tokyo presentation. BSI has nothing to do with read-out speed, you probably mean stacked sensor, which the S5 II doesn't have.

Cheers much nice review however I believe Sony’s AF transition is smoother with their compatible lenses plus they have more control even on their new phone you can get a more smoother plus more control and with the new ZV you can have two people in focus at the same time one in the foreground the other in the back plus Sony still most portable and PS still missing product showcase which is a huge drawback for KZfaqrs

Thank you! No, AF transition smoothness is as good as it gets on both. It is not possible to tell them apart. It is not possible to focus on two focal lengths at the same time, so I don’t know what you mean by that. Product showcase is just a gimmick for beginners, you can easily set it up on any camera.

13:43 Sony gives weird colors to skies and sometimes water surfaces. I pointed the same time ago in another of your videos (a Sony / Nikon camera comparison, I don't remember the exact models). The issue is very clear in every Sony comparison vs others brands. I started to see it after i watched a interview with a pro colorist that said that blues were difficult with Sony because grey or magenta baked in blue sky. He maked a somewhat detailed color comparison between brands

There is nothing wrong with Sony colors, just a bit different white balance, it is not better or worse than Panasonic. "Bad Sony colors" is generally just a myth carried over from almost 10 years old A7 II.

@@TheHybridShooter I agree in general, because all cameras have differences even with controlled white balance. One brand is not necessarily better than other, but it seems like every brand make its decisions about colors, all of them with good technical reasons. There are facts about that, some brand put grey in skies and other mess with greens, other bake magenta all over the place, etc.

@@amermeleitor It is a lot more complicated than that. Color reproduction is not necessarily a "creative choice" of the manufacturers. Some manufacturers have a lot of trouble achieving acceptable level of color accuracy, but Sony is not one of them.

There's reasons why the brands do what they do and no one is perfect, even Sony. The creative choices are in the JPG images and user selected image profiles.

That’s a good video review overall, but you are terribly wrong about the ISO performance. This is a Dual Native ISO, so it is very clean way above 3200. In fact, the 2nd base ISO is 4000, so why would it be good up to 3200 like you mentionned? 4000 is way cleaner than 3200.

@@TheHybridShooter My comment wasn’t intended to be offensive.. just wanted to point out that you entirely skipped the main feature of the sensor, and that you are talking like it’s a Single Native ISO sensor. I watched the whole video, and you haven’t even mentionned the Dual Native ISO.. you simply say that ISO performance is "identical" to pretty much every other backside-illuminated full-frame sensor camera released after 2018.. as usually, you will get very clean images up to ISO3200. Then you don’t even speak about ISO4000 (the 2nd base ISO).. you skip to 6400 and 12800. I’m sorry, but this is a misleading statement.

@@davidmultimedia2024 Offensive or not, you are still the one who is terribly wrong. ISO 4000 is the second native ISO only in V-Log. Does the the sample that you see when I am talking about ISO look like a V-Log to you? Second native ISO in most other picture styles is 640 and I am absolutely right when I say that you will get very clean images up to ISO 3200. Most cameras with FF BSI sensors actually have dual native ISO, for example Sony A7 IV has it, but nobody even speaks about it, because it is to be expected nowadays. Also when you select the second native ISO it doesn't mean that you will suddenly get clean images. You will just get more DR, but the noise floor still rises.

I assumed everything was shot in V-Log then converted to Rec.709 since these days, most people are interested in V-Log and colorgrading with maximum DR and minimum sharpening/NR applied in camera... so it did affect my comprehension of your review and for that I'm sorry.. it was my mistake. That's right.. if your Dual Native ISO is set to ''Low'' in the menu, then obviously ISO4000 will be noisier than 3200. If you do select ''High'' manually in the Dual Native ISO Settings menu... then yes, you will automatically get much a much cleaner image at 4000 compared to 3200. If it's set to ''Auto'', then it's supposed to switch from Low to High automatically when you rise the ISO value. Please do correct me if I'm wrong, but to my knowledge, this is basically how dual native ISO works. I own the original S5 and I only have the Auto mode, but it does result in a much cleaner image when reaching 4000. Of course, you still need a proper amount of light to get clean images with high ISO values. You can get a very clean image with a high ISO value when shooting during the day, as long as there is a good amount of light available. If you close down the aperture too much in a very low light scenario..then obvously it's going to be very noisy. Exposure is always the crucial part.

If you are prioritizing shadows, you will get more latitude once you cross the second native ISO threshold, but when you prioritize highlights you actually loose latitude after crossing dual native ISO threshold. Base, native and dual ISO are very complex topics which is the main reason why I don't talk about it in camera reviews.
