That's an interesting decision, I can relate to liking the S5ii. I didn't do that because of the lens selection, the auto-focus is still quite a bit behind Sony although it's at least in a similar ballpark now. The only has a 33mp sensor vs the 24mp in the Lumix, which for me as a Hybrid shooter is helpful. But the S5ii's 6K video resolution is pretty cool. The A7IV has 7K downsampled which I thought wouldn't look as good but on side by side I like the way it looks more. However; the video formats and menu and just general friendliness of the Lumix for me still makes it tempting. @@KBmediaOnline

I've gone from the A7iv and R6 ii to the S5ii. Don't need the advanced X video specs. The user experience, the menus, custom setup, af(almost on par with Sony), real time luts, Vlog, and the rest are fantastic. I prefer the Lumix out of the three. Can't go wrong with either of them but imo the S5ii is the overall best camera for hybrid shooting especially if you're into video. The S5ii(x) is Pannasonic's revolutionary Sony A7iii.

@@victortalley Imo R6ii was not much of an upgrade from the R6. 4mp and unlimited hours recording. S5ii was a huge upgrade but then again the S5 wasn't that great. Agreed!!! I'm surprised Nikon didn't release the Z6III last year. Obviously they had the Z8 launch so that might be why but the Z6II was a VERY minor update from the original Z6 so and obviously the Z8 is a massive step ahead so they need to filter some of that tech down the line. With full frame 4k60 and over 12fps they could blow away the A7IV in specs if they wanted

Currently rocking the original S5. It has been a bit hard for me not to hop over to the S5mII, mainly due to the increased resolution in the viewfinder and the better autofocus. But, trying to hold off until a S1 or S1r successor comes around. If it doesn't by end of Q12024, will probably just grab the S5mII.

Same situation , more a budget thing for me. THe af isnt just " better " is finally usable. So much times AF on S5 ruined some footage, despite I know I can't rely , but sometime for example in a crowd and I want to shoot someone walking on stage, and I can't have my hands on the lens (because I step up the camera using a t ripod ) over the crowd , and just af was so ... tilting. (it was with 85 lumix 1.8 ) so its a lumix lense wich are the "best" to be used with AF on s5.

Hey! I find Panasonic seems more neutral with colors and probably closer to Canon than Sony. I haven't tried to match them side by side but the 10bit profiles from Sony grade pretty well now so I don't think it will be too hard to get them close. Sony's previous 8bit cameras were tough to work with but the FX30 shouldn't be too hard to get close enough to the S5IIX

The term „extremly well build“ blongs to the S1 and S1H in my opinion. The S5 II (X) is build really good for the pricepoint. For example the door for the cards is another level on the S1 and S1H.

I hate to resurrect this comment section, but I have a question. I current shoot on the Canon EOS R, but the recording limit, 4k crop, hit-or-miss AF, plus no 3rd party lenses makes me wanting to move to a new platform. I have rented the R6ii, A7iv, and the Lumix S5iix. I am still on the fence between Sony and Lumix. I do about a 70/30 split leaning towards video over photo and AF for objects (ex: pocket knives) is very important to me. My question is, if you were starting from scratch would you go Sony A7 iv or Lumix S5 iix?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 3 ай бұрын
It's a tough choice. In almost every way, the S5IIX is a better camera (the exception being autofocus) but Sony has more lenses, accessories, and is the easier bet in the long run since Panasonics system is newer. I fully expect Panasonic to commit to full frame, it's just that most of their current full frame cameras are gen 1 or gen 2 so they are behind. So if you don't mind taking a bit more risk and if perfect autofocus isn't crucial for what you do, I'd go Lumix

@learningcameras
@learningcameras 4 ай бұрын
I have not personally experienced it but it's not a camera issue...it's because the S5IIX no longer has an anti aliasing filter. That filter has been removed from almost all cameras 24mp and more because AA filters can have a negative effect on sharpness and detail. So it's something new to Panasonic users because they have been used to lower resolution crop sensor cameras but most high resolution full frame cameras will also have this issue if they don't have an AA filter

First of all thank you for making me build this I am also considering this option 20 40 60 mm is very nice starting range but that 3.5-5.6 is the only downside… will have to always check iso and the change in dof in kit it comes to 350$ so is a deal if buget is restricted at first… that for 6k mode 24-30fps, for 4k 60 you will have 1.5 crop, so it becomes 30 60 90mm, in this mode you will need a lens 11-20mm or something like this, In my mind i always think of this full frame mm (14 24 35 50 85mm) For sony ff i have 17-28 f2.8, 28-75 f2.8 70-300 f4.5-6.3 (at 275mm it stil has 5.6f so is like 1cm dof and 2mm 100% focus) Now for lumix s5iix On the cheap side in 4k apsc mode you have sigma apsc 18-50mm f2.8 (apsc 28-75mm) 550$, Summary: Option 1: 1lens 350$ in kit f3.5-5.6 (ff 20-40-60, apsc 30 60 90mm) this will get you started only, considering the rest of accessories we need to buy) Option 2: 3 lens 1550$ (ff 6k 20-60 f3.5-5.3, apsc 4k 15-75mm F2.8 Panasonic 20-60 f3.5-5.3 (30-90mm) 350$ Sigma apsc 10-18 f2.8 (15-32mm) 650$ Sigma apsc 18-50mm f2.8 (apsc 28-75mm) 550$ Option 3: 2 lens 1800$ kit f2.8 (ff 6k 16-70mm, aps-c 4k 24-95mm) Sigma 16-28 f2.8 900$ Sigma 28-70 f2.8 900$ Option 4: 2 lens 2700$ kit f2.8 (ff 6k 14-70mm, aps-c 4k 21-95mm) Sigma 14-24 f2.8 (apsc 21-36mm) 1800$ Sigma 28-70 f2.8 (apsc 42-105mm) 900$ Option 5: 5 (3+2optional) lens 4720$ (2020$+2700$ optional) kit f1.4 (ff 6k 14-24-30-50-85, apsc 4k 21-36-45-75-127) Sigma 14mm f1.4 (apsc 21mm) 1600$ (optional) Sigma 24mm f1.4 (apsc 36mm) 950$ sigma 30mm f1.4 (apsc 45mm) 370$, sigma 50mm f1.4 (apsc 75mm) 700$ Sigma 85mm f1.4 (apsc 127mm) 1100$ (optional) Notable mention: sigma apsc 16mm f1.4 (apsc 24mm) 450$ , sigma 30mm f1.4 (apsc 45mm) 370$, panasonic 50 f1.8 (apsc 75mm) 480$ If you find them second hand in good condition is even better if you are starting out like me

I've been looking at this camera for some time, it has an acceptable price for the prices I quote, however there were a lot of different opinions about the autofocus. I use a Fuji XT4, but I want to switch to something with a solid autofocus, Sony is king in this area, and with the Fuji I'm always in a hurry when I have to use it. Some projects that you develop solo I have to have something reliable in that field, is this camera really solid when it comes to autofocus, at Sony level?

I'd say Panasonic is currently slightly better than Fuji (not sure why Fuji can't figure this one out) but Sony is probably the most reliable. The problem is the S5IIX is a vastly better camera than the A7IV for video especially so it's a tough choice. The S5IIX focuses extremely well...but there can be an occasional hiccup which is pretty rare on the latest Sony cameras

My footage looks just as good as anything shot on the 'X' version. And Davinci Resolve edits my 6K natively and it runs smooth as butter on my Laptop. Hope this helps.

@learningcameras
@learningcameras 4 ай бұрын
As long as your exposure is good, you shouldn't have an issue. I used filters. But remember, the autofocus system "sees" what you see so if the image is dark, what it sees is dark making it difficult to focus. Even with phase detection autofocus, I've noticed the AF algorithms on the S5II series are still very contrast dependent so if you take away contrast or light with filters, it will have more issues locking focus so things like mist filters that reduce contrast might also reduce autofocus performance

looking back at this from today and what is going in with Panasonic and KZfaq camera reviewer space, I'm getting really skeptical of videos that only sing praise of any film gear I've seen. So check out my S5II video from the event: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/erqAqLOJrLu2fHU.html because this video isn't a "review". There were actually a few comments in it pointing out that my review was the only one addressing the AF issues. I was actually pretty disappointed in that trip because I was shooting alongside youtubers who were having massive AF issues and NONE of them talked about it in their videos. But I don't blame Panasonic for that...they had nothing to do with it...they gave us 100% free access to shoot whatever we wanted and say whatever we wanted. It's up to us as creators to be honest. I do think that because it was a first event for a lot of people that are just youtubers and not really "press reviewers", that skewed things a bit too much. But again, that isn't an issue with Panasonic or any other brand...obviously plenty of Apple fans with the letter "i" in their name that get invited to Apple events and put out content on the new iPhone that's skewed pro Apple which is way worse than the camera press trips

Sony just proved it's possible but also that it doesn't have the quality and low light performance of BSI sensors yet so I'm thinking we'll see a faster scanning BSI sensor or maybe stacked CMOS but again, those sensors are typically only in way more expensive cameras so I'd be surprised to see it on a camera that costs under 3 grand. The rolling shutter isn't good but it's on par with other cameras in this price point. This sensor is based on the Sony A7III and the Sony A7IV has worse rolling shutter because it went higher on MP without increasing scan speeds. To get better rolling shutter, you either need fast scan speeds or low megapixels. The Canon R6II scan speeds are a little faster but you either need to go low megapixels like the A7SIII (not great for photos), or stacked CMOS which I'm hoping the S1 series which I expect to see this year will use

FX3, XH2S, etc, and there is nothing that brings all these features to the table. Maybe the C70? Really crazy how Panasonic produces cameras like this at such prices. I will pull trigger on next S5IIX iteration or maybe go with S1H2, if either of those introduces built in ND, and has lower rolling shutter, though those features aren't nearly as important as what Panasonic already brings to the table.

"Sony and Canon should be worried" , really ? - looking at the B & H Nov23 top 10 selling cameras of 2023 I can't see a single Panasonic model, plenty of Sony and Canon cameras though so I am guessly it's Panasonic who should be worried. There is a price to pay if you ignore your own customers requests to drop useless contrast detect autofocus and get a working phase detect system like everyone else uses for almost a decade. I find it amusing to see people here who can flit from one camera lens mount to another. I can only assume they have just have one or two lenses not 10's of lenses worth many times more than the camera. Sad to produce your best cameras ever only to discover your competion has moved on while you delayed IMO.

I'm sure Panasonic would love a 1 year turnaround (as would Nikon) but like you said because of lenses and ecosystem, it takes a LONG time and yes, I think Panasonic owns that failure. But now Panasonic is pretty close to playing at Sony/Canon levels with autofocus/photo and blowing them away with video so I think Canon and Sony will start feeling pressure as Panasonic expands these features to their other cameras. Especially now that Panasonic offers a decent lens lineup. Remember, this is the FIRST updated phase detection AF camera from Panasonic and the first 2nd gen full frame camera..They still need to update their entire lineup which doesn't happen overnight. Nikon also produced a winner in the Z8 so I do think the days of Sony & Canon enjoying almost no competition are about over. And I wouldn't be surprised to see DJI become a major player next year. But Sony delivered an average camera in the video department with the A7IV which is leaving room for a bit more competition

As an owner of the amazing Osmo Pocket 3 I love how everything like log, 10 bit , 120fps 4k 1" sensor phase detect and gimbal cost about £400. If they ever produce a full frame or even apsc with a similar price performance then even Sony might have to take notice. I also own a A7RV , ZV1 and A6700 - the key is lenses. Not old lenses like Pansonic M43 of which I own many but they are slow and noisy to focus but modern state of the art Gmaster and third parties. Really the game has been won by Sony. Canon sell almost twice as many cameras as Sony but Sony camera revenues are 20% more. That says everything. People are buying high end expensive cameras from Sony. It's no good getting excited about Panasonic's recent conversion to phase detect when Sony AI chip aided autofocus has just raised the bar again. It's like Panasonic are at where Sony were 5 years ago. All my current Sony's have that AI chip and not a gimick. Nikon have done well with a Sony sensor but the A9 iii is the writing on the wall. @@ourtvchannel Panasonic is definitely playing catch up with autofocus, full frame lenses, and probably with sensor tech but that's about it. And with the massive leap in autofocus ability on the S5II they might be getting to the good enough for most people even if Sony stays in the lead. For example, none of us complained about the autofocus of the Sony A7III because it was good enough. Even though the A7IV improved autofocus, for most people, they were still happy with the A7III. Same thing applies with lenses. Sure, Sony will have more lens options but if the main lenses I need are covered, having more doesn't affect me personally.
