Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma in a rare interview gives an insight to the genius of Burman Dada who was by nature simple as a child. Well trained in classical music, Dada simplified classical music for the common man to make him like it, pursued folk music by visiting villages in various states and introduced it in the films so that our folk music is not lost to our younger generation.
Dada did not like heavy orchestration and gave importance to the lyrics and the singer's voice. Dada would explain the situation to the musicians and encourage them to play to their best.
Enjoy Part One of the interview in which Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma pays tribute to Burman Dada's memory.

I like the comparison that SD Burman draws between the orchestration of a song and the size of a beautiful woman's bindi. He used orchestra to adorn his melodies based on folk, classical as well Rabindra sangeet; it never overpowered the basic sweetness of the melody.

@Roli Saraswat, Almost everyone has said that SD wanted minimum music and gave importance to the voice of the singer. We could not met Shakti Samanta, as he was no more, but this is what he has said in an interview: Shakti Samanta on SD Burman Dada was of the firm belief that background music was secondary. It was singer’s voice that was important. Once R.D. had set the musicians and Dada walked into the recording room and moved them all away saying ‘Lata gaayega aur ek tabla bajega. Bus’. Another time he had told Pancham he wanted only 10 musicians. Pancham called 13. Dada came and the first thing he did was count the musicians, and said ‘what are these three doing here?’ and threw them out. @crazyoldsongs Please watch my KZfaq videos SD Burman - Minimum Music Maximum Effect. I don't remember which Part No. In background music of two songs Dada used single instrument. The films were Kala Pani and Bandini. Other music directors in background music used 50 to 75 instruments.

Beautiful interview. Some people used to say that Dada Burman used to hv low instrumentazisation. Here lies the answer. Song n feel is always important. It should not be overweighed with orchestra. Very nicely explained. Also listened to part 2, what a great human being Dada Burman was. My compliments for both interviews.

Nirmalkumar ji, Whenever the situation demanded heavy orchestration, like 'Honton mein baat aisi' from 'Jewel Thief', Dada would use it very well. Manohari Singh told me so in his interview. Part Three has been uploaded. Please view it. Thank you for you encouraging words.

Madhur Geet, Thank you so much. Yes, true. Coming from a royal family, Dada was down to earth. Recently, I met Sanjeev Kohli, late Madan Mohan's son, who called Dada a 'Farishta' (an angel), Non controversial, respected by all his contemporaries.

That's excellent Moti Lal ji. Was totally mesmerized hearing your soulful conversation with Santoor maestro, Shivkumar Sharmaji. It would be more interesting if we know what are the pieces of melodious that these great instrumentalists played for Burman Dada's songs. For an instance, when I was hearing Pandit Hariprasad's interview, till the end of the video, I was eager to know which pieces of flute renditions he rendered for Burman Dada's film songs. For example, Pandit Chaurasiya ji and Shiv Kumar Sharma ji played brilliant piece of prelude and interludes flute and santoor tunes in a song, Baharo Mera Jeevan Bhi Sawaro for Khaiyaam saab music in film Akhiri Khat.

Sablu Mukesh Thanks for your comments appreciating the interview. If you watch Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma's interview with us, he has said that he has played santoor for Burman Dada in every song. So is the case with Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. Because, Dada never compromised when he had to use solo instrumentalists. If you listen to 'Jeevan ki bagiya mehkegi' song from film Tere Mere Sapne, both Shiv ji and Hari ji have done jugalbandi of santoor and flute. There is no other instrument except tabla for rhythm.

Moti Lalwani ji. Thank you so much for your reciprocation. Most welcome sir. Yes, I do agree with you they are the top world class instrumentalists whose association with a stalwart music composer like SD Burman Dada is so praiseworthy in the history of Hindi cinema and music world. We are fortunate to learn such interesting things through the videos and your conversations with well known musical personalities. You are doing an excellent job in this perspective.

Sablu Mukesh These interviews are my humble tribute to the greatest composer of all times, who remained young at heart and in demand till his last days. He refused to buy awards, saying his award was public appreciation. He trained younger generation of music directors and left behind a legacy which will be remembered for ever. He was Bhishma Pitamaha of our times. Thanks.
