I loved his voice on this album. He still had the high range from his Power Metal/Cowboys From Hell era, but he was leaning into the screaming that he would utilize on later albums. His voice deepened quite a bit after this album.

The amount of power in his voice is incredible. His voice is so raw, but hitting every note properly. This is also the magic of Terry Date, who knew how to get the best out of these guys.

And yup quantum enigma, Phil came from a background of blues and jazz musicians playing metal, so he grew up truly learning music as an artist, not some coolguy in a band.

Idk when you saw him but I saw him open for Skid Row in 91-92 Rpi field house . Venue kind of sucked it was a hockey rink but sat 8-9,000. N thought they were the hair band Pantera n they CRUSHED the show!! Then they gained momentum n came around a year later n played the Palace in Albany as their own headlining tour and considering the capacity and the acoustics of an actual theater and a bit more intimate . Combined with the energy by everyone in there ,that was one of , if not the GREATEST concert I ever saw and he sounded EXACTLY like the CD!! They ripped chairs out and throwing them it was chaos!! Two yrs later they were super huge headliners with Sepultra for Far Beyond Driven n still sounded decent.

Phil's best vocal performances were actually with DOWN especially around 1995. You can pretty much look up any down concert from then and he sounds better and more brutal than on the DOWN albums
