May 12, 2024: A game-tying goal from Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett survived a coach's challenge for goaltender interference after he shoved Boston's Charlie Coyle into Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman.
"If a defending player has been pushed, shoved, or fouled by an attacking player so as to cause the defending player to come into contact with his own goalkeeper, such contact shall be deemed contact initiated by the attacking player for purposes of this rule, and if necessary a penalty assessed to the attacking player and if a goal is scored it would be disallowed."

Coyle was already well in the crease in front of swayman moments before Bennett touched him, the only question is did Sam’s push fully cause the blockage, was Charlie far enough away that the push was the thing that caused swayman to not be able to slide? No, Charlie was already well into the blue/crease in the literal exact location swayman had to be to make that play just moments before Sam touched him, so without the push swayman still most likely can’t make that save with Coyle right in the way, or at least taking the goal away is very hard and it should be a hard call since it’s difficult to make the argument it was Sam’s fault when Charlie was already in the exact space Jeremy had to be before the push.

Coyle was in the vicinity to play the puck, it unfortunately passed harmlessly between his legs, but he can be touched legally, and I guess it's probably more of a push than a cross check. The problem after the push is Coyle is already too close to his goaltender under his momentum and positioning before being pushed. Once he was legally pushed he couldn't regain his balance with the goal tender right there.

No, I don't think it's clear at all. Coyle could have played the puck (didn't) and got pushed in the back which would not have amounted to a cross check or interference normally, but he was standing right next to his own goalie, and his own goalie was coming the other way. Fact is 1) he was just a little too close and 2) he didn't play the puck away.

I can’t believe in nobody understands how am I the only one in the world that seems to understand this. That was not goaltender interference. If your own man goes into the goaltender, that’s not goaltender interference. Sam Bennett cross checked the Boston Bruins into his own goalie. The referees missed the call, because that was very very hard to pick up with all the action going on in front of the net. They can’t look on the replay and give somebody a penalty. It’s against the rules. They are not allowed to give Sam Bennett a cross, checking penalty, because of what they see on the replay their hands were tied into nothing to do with not enough contact. There’s nothing that they can do about it because for that not count, Sam Bennett had to get a cross check penalty and you cannot give him that based on a replay.

Should have simply been disallowed. This said, it's unclear Swayman stops that puck. And Florida was the better team. I personally don't believe in blaming refs. You play through adversity and make your puck luck. Human error is a part of the game, just like giveaways or shots that miss the net.

Everybody’s going back-and-forth on this I don’t understand what is so difficult to understand. It happens in real time. Therefore, it was a very, very very difficult thing to pick up. Very few people were able to pick it up. If no goal is scored nobody would even be talking about it. It happens so quickly. Did you hear anybody in the arena or hear any of the players crying after the goal? It was called a goal. The only thing the refs could’ve done was rule it a no goal on the ice. And then they can play it by ear at that point as far as if they want to assess Sam Bennett, a penalty or not. However, it was deemed a goal. Once it’s called a goal this rule that people are putting out there completely gets thrown out and it has nothing to do with what happens next. The play gets challenged that has its own rule. It states that no player should be penalized based on a missed call. Once the referees saw on the replay that Sam Bennett made a cross check, there is nothing they can do about it. They can’t rule it a no goal. Because the only reason why that would not be a goal was because of Sam Bennetts cross check. If your own player goes into you And a goal is scored you can rule it a no goal. After they rule it a no goal, they can decide if they wanna penalize Sam Bennett or not. But it was ruled a goal. Once it was ruled a goal, the NHL rulebook as far as initiation of contact by an offensive player into a defensive olayer gets thrown out. You cannot rule goalie interference. You’re not allowed to say Sam Bennett cross checked him therefore, it’s a no goal. I didn’t make the rules. It was clearly a penalty you can’t view the replay, see a penalty that caused a goal to happen. Rule it a no goal because of a penalty. If it was the other way around, and it was ruled a no goal on the ice. They don’t necessarily have to give Sam Bennett two minutes for crosschecking. Very very very very most likely they would, though. If it was ruled a no goal, Florida would’ve challenged. In Florida would’ve lost a challenge. However, they wouldn’t be unable to penalize Sam Bennett. But it happened the other way around. They called it a goal. They cannot take away the goal because of a penalty that happened that they missed on a replay.

To be honest sway was already in a splits like position. I really don't think he could recover for that save anyways. I do think it still would have been a goal. To me it's a much tougher call than people are making it out to be. It's not a clear cut goalie interference cause they do take into consideration if the goalie would have been able to make that save if not for the guy getting bumped into him. Regardless Bennett is a menace to the Bruins. Should have had a 1 game suspension for that shot to Marchand but I guess you could call it poetic justice

Read the rulebook. This is not defined as goalie interference even though there is contact. The rule hinges on the definition of "contact". The contact initiated by Bennet needed to be intentionally directed at the goalie, which it arguably wasn't (he was just trying to create separation, a common netfront tactic), or it needed to prevent the goalie from making a save (which it didn't, as he was not in a position to make that save even if free to manouver). Even if you disagree, the margin of opinion was not heavy enough to overturn the ruling on the ice as the evidence for interference has to be clear and unambiguous to overrule. Therefore good goal. You may not like the goal or the manner in which it was scored, but it was technically within the rules of the NHL.

What a great goal. Nothing egregious from Bennett. The guy stopped his progress and then continued on and fell on Swayman. Should've been a double minor for embellishment.

Swayman couldnt have saved that anyways. Coyle also overskated into the crease. Deal with it.

He was moving into position to get behind the goalie and block a shot. Just like the Vancouver game with the entire team diving behind the goalie. Bennett just gave him a little help getting there.

IT's not a judgment call. The rulebook clearly says that if a goal scores after a player pushes a defender into the goalie, that goal should be waved off. No matter how minor the push is.

The refs got this one right. Coyle was weak on his skates. No way Swayman was making that save and no was Bennett was missing that shot. The little push had no impact on the play. Go Panthers.

The rules literally say nothing about the ability to make the save. If he was impeded like he was it was interference. But I’d expect such incompetence from a panthers fan

Goalie interference can be called without there even being a shot on goal. This should have been a no brainer. The Florida player clearly pushed the Bruin player into his own goalie before the puck entered the net. Not only did this prevent the goalie from possibly making the save, it also eliminated the Bruin player from defending the goal crease himself.

Everybody hating on hockey, hating on the officials. That was a very very difficult call to make in real time. Everything was so fast and there’s so many guys in front of the net, and there was a scrimmage for the puck. The referees missed a call, there’s no doubt about it. It cannot be reversed on replay. A penalty cannot be called because of something that happened on a replay so without a crosschecking penalty that goal had to be allowed.
