Ive never known the Euphonium is such a active and inimitable brass instrument

It isn't in Orchestras and rarely gets love from wind ensembles - aside from wind ensemble marches - but it really shines in solos and brass band and can be a valuable asset in wind ensembles if the players know how to make good sounds as it can bridge the incompatibility between tubas/trombones.

I don't like to admit it, but he's right. But when you listen to the whole song you have to admit that David Childs is a fantastic musician. greetings from the Netherlands.

the beginning of this piece sounds so graceful peaceful and almost sad, then when you hear the motif it starts to get bouncy.

a friend of mine is playing a solo like this in solo and ensemble best of luck to her she has amazing musicianship and tone she can handle it.

This is one of the Better and Harder to find recordings of Pantomime. I really like this one, it's just that my favorite performance of this solo is the one Frey did with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. It's on Majestic Journey.

The “TONE” Kings: (1.) Demondrae Thurman (2.) David Childs (3.) Philip Sparke (4.) Brian Bowman It simply doesn’t get any better than their “sound(s)”. 💯

Steven Mead?
@THEbeautifuLIE2 жыл бұрын
@@Jonavttp I (personally) think Mead may have the best overall technique & playing ability of all time on Euphonium. Dude’s an absolute surgeon! I don’t believe he has one of the best tones. The way he plays is certainly by design - I just find it “thinner”, “brighter” w/less “weight” on the sound than the 4 I listed above. What’s your opinion? Whose tone do you enjoy most?
@Jonavttp2 жыл бұрын
@@THEbeautifuLIE My favorites are probably Robert Vos, Mead, and David Childs, but you have an excellent point

@MrEuphoniumGuy Try studio-music.co.uk - search for Pantomime and you will find the solo part as well as available arrangements for Wind Band (this) and Brass Band. Can't send a link in the reply - since I get an Error when I try. So Google studio-mucic.co.uk.

I was privilaged enough to play this solo with the Old Dominion University Wind Ensemble back in 99. I was so very nervous. David Childs plays wonderfully but I have to agree with Jipoman that I've heard a much better performance from Steven Mead on this. Roger Behrend remains my favorite euphonium soloist. Got to study under him from 96-later half of 97. Great experience. But....love Childs. Great stuff

Cool I'm playing this for my middle school solo and ensemble festival. I can play everything even the 3rd octave Eb but I just can't play the fast part in the end accurately. I can get the phrasings but I can't accurately hit each note. It's too late to back out and my solo is in a month. Any recommendations to help me? I am super desparate for feedback on how to play that fast part.

Empire Videos grab a metronome and start playing it at a low speed to learn all the notes well and then speed up with 5 every time you've played it good:) that's how I learned Harlequin by Philip Sparke... If that doesn't work, just play it a little less fast, you're the soloist, not the orchestra or the piano you're playing with :) good luck!

I like this, too. But first the Video with Maed is less qualitative and Mead did it better in my opinion because he played it with more feeling but in this video the soloist played it very accurate.

I love this version. I find steven mead played it a little cleaner over all. But I loved David's trill and resonating last note so clean. Better than steven mead.
