Thank you for your honesty Leilani. The pantry is so beautiful that envy rose up in me pretty quickly. Thankfully the Holy Spirit jumped in quickly & I was able to thank the Lord that I have a home of my own & a pantry (as unattractive & inadequate as I feel it is). What a blessing to have more abundance than your space can hold! But prettier & larger would still be nice. God bless.

Hi. About the gritty pears. I'm sure there are LOTS of pear varieties out there. And. At home we used to have gritty hard pears. We would peel and core them and put them on the stove with some water for several hours. In the end they would turn dark red all through and be very soft whilst holding their shape. (still keeping the grittyness) One of my favorite things to eat in winter.

You are such a sweet person. I am so glad that you are posting about pressure canning and water bath. I am 66 and have been canning since I was 16. I joined a canning facebook group and posted my vegetable soup that my Mom taught me how to do when I was 16 and have been doing every year for 50 years. I was kicked out of the group because I said I processed my soup in a hot water bath. Hurt my lil feelings. Fast forward, I decided to pressure can the next batch. I hated it. I am going to continue water bathing my soup.

They ate the organs first because they're the most unstable part of the animal difficult to preserve before canning and goes bad very quickly. I don't mind heart and gizzards but liver, kidney, sweet breads...I just...can't. We can deer heart and it's delicious. Beautiful pantry and homestead! Thank you both for sharing.b

Totally jealous I spent most of my life growing up in cities. But I find myself more and more wanting to do homesteading. I’ve even started to make a lot of my own food from scratch. Everything from breads to butchering and curing my own meat, I even started canning last year for the very first time. I’m even making my own condiments and preserves. But I live in an apartment so I’m very limited to space. I need a place with a kitchen five times the size of what I currently have. I need a Home like what my grandmother and great grandmother had. They had a massive kitchen, large pantry, and a large scullery. They also had two root cellar. One was a cool dam, which had a water feature to create a little moisture in the air and the other one was cool, dry. They would use the two different route sellers to store different food. Now because we live in more modern times in addition to the large kitchen, pantry, scullery and route sellers I would also love to have a large walk-in fridge and a large walk in freezer. Oh, the things I dream about now days.

When canning meat do a batch of it plain nothing added to the jars of beef just put the raw beef in and seal them up and can them !!! I would do one batch with onions in it then one with garlic in the jars it was some thing for a different taste for me at that time !!! Did chickens with the bone in it also same with rabbit squirrel and turkey meat also !!! All of them raw meat into the jars and canning them then !!!

Has a European currently living in North America I was surprised you guys don’t eat organ meat. There are many dishes throughout all of Europe, where we use the organs from an animal.. many of my Canadian friends said they never eat in Oregon and yet I have fed them steak and kidney pie many times and they love it. I just didn’t tell them there was a kidney’s in there. I have also dry cured beef heart into a type of jerky and they sit around the campfire with that beer under beef, heart jerky and eat it and think it’s great. Just goes to show you it’s all in the head.

Organ meat!!! My favorite part of the animal!!! I buy chicken hearts and livers. Easier to buy wine? Someone has money to spend! A quart of wine costs $20. One can make the same for $1! Homemade shouldn't have to taste different than store bought. One just needs to find the right recipe.
