Panty Hose Used for Broken Belt Will it Work ?

We started with a standard panty hose and loomed around the water pump and alternator (of course these 2 are vital as we need to limp to the next exit with good charing of battery and quenching of coolant system ). You will not have AC (stop sniveling if your stuck in the desert..you will be just fine. ), and power steering (prepare to regurgitate power steering fluid when steering and make a complete mess here for sure).
The first start of panty hose did not work out. Perhaps we can blame the quality of said manufacturer of panty hose,as well as the lack of material for this experiment. We shall try a thicker brand. More of a sock if you will.
Now tying a knot that will last is crucial. (Keep a knot tying Navy manual in the glove box just in case). In addition the tension on the pulleys is going to be extra important.
Second engine start and we have approximately 2.9 seconds dedicated to a functioning circulation of vital pulleys. Enough for us to travel about half a foot..maybe.
In reviewing this experiment we realized a few things:
1) Road side assistance would have been nice.
2) Panty Hose will more than likely not work for serpentine belt style setups.
3)Duck Tape may have been the answer the whole time.
So..there you have it. If you can make it happen we would love to see your working video of panty hose utilized to get you several exits or miles to get things fixed. (V Rib Belts do not count for obvious reasons)

If you run the pantyhose OVER the idler pulley, instead of UNDER it, it should do better. Don't forget about silicone hose and inserts, also.

Yes this absolutely does work. My dad taught me this years ago. The belt on my old Chevy Nova broke one day when I was driving up to Shaver Lake. I always kept a pair of pantyhose in the trunk because my dad taught me that it would save me from being stranded some day. Sure enough he was right and I never bothered to replace the belt again. The pantyhose stayed on the car until we got rid of it, about 2 years. You're just not doing it right. You need to tie it around all the pulleys making sure that it is as tight as you can possible make it and pull your knot as tight as you can. Also you need to cut the ends as short as you can without it coming untied.

The fact that his water pump housing is smooth it won't work and his water pump goes in reverse bc its a one belt system his thermostat may malfunction

That nova had V-belts, NOT a serpentine. Different pulleys.

This old fix has been around since before pantyhose existed, back when stockings were the norm, and it would work much more effectively with good old V belt pulleys. Especially when run just over 2 pulleys.

It does work...but it was easier back when we had wider pulley wheels with a steeper rim. Not so much today with modern designs, and I've been able to drive a few hours down the road with it...but they will fray and break eventually. Best just to carry an extra fanbelt and only the basic necessary tools to replace it!

works on cars that needed the V shaped or deep grooved pulleys.

This trick works fine with a v belt set up. It will not run everything. It will however run the water pump and alt. The PS pump puts to much strain on it. I drove an old 76 ford with a 460 in about 30 miles to the parts store once on a pair and pantyhose

It works on older v belt cars. Newer cat have a reverse water pump and electric fan. Old cars the fan blades were attached to the water pump and the panty hose rode in the grooves of the v belt pully.

I think the issue is the water pump pulley not having a edge on the front to keep the panty hose on. Some WP pulleys have an edge/groove that can keep the hose form sliding off the front.

You probably have glossy tights (legs from a pair) / stockings/ knee highs, Mate, so there is less friction. They could have been washed in fabric conditioner. You could do with stockings like mine, but they do not make them like 16th century ones anymore. Men had them, you know.

Please pay attention to Mike Albert... He has a GOOD POINT... I STRONGLY AGREE WITH HIM... it happened to me loooong time ago... about 30 years ago, meaning that is NOT NEW FOR ME.

If you burn the excess off as opposed to cutting with box cutter, it will hold together better because nylons are made of mostly synthetic material and it will melt together like glue.
