From time to time you may decide that stop leak can be an alternative to an actual repair of a coolant leak if it seems minor.
The Buick came in with an overheat condition, and in all actuality the overheating situation was attributed to the stop leak built up inside the coolant system . ( Radiator with goop EXPOSED here 2:25)
You may stop a minor leak , but over time the expansion process of stop leak can restrict flow in the radiator , heater core, and many of the smaller ports to the coolant system in general.
A great product if your stuck somewhere. Not so great if you forget to flush this goop out and ultimately repair what is leaking.
Additionally the rusty coolant pouring out is from a lack of coolant system maintenance. Remember to check the factory specification for the required coolant change out as per maintenance.
If you would like to see a particular repair or have a question ..hit me up on twitter @urmechanic, and I will Periscope directly to you !

Never any issues with Bar Leak Aluminium, the material is fine enough for small leaks...but flush the coolant system 1st...stay away from the thicker or permanent stuff it cause more problems.

I used stopleak in a GMC diesel van work truck with 245k. The leak was where the motor was going to have to be removed and a lot $$ work just to get to it. Put it in and ran it for another 105k and sold it. The motor was still running great, I was on my 3rd front end rebuild and the rest of the truck was falling apart, the paint had mostly fallen off but the motor ran like a top.

Only stop leak products passing ASTM D-6107 should be used (the standard consists of tests to ensure the product works and does no damage). Stop leak tablets such as those made by Bar's, have been sold by GM, Ford, Chrysler for over 30 years.

I'm pretty sure if used correctly it don't do this.. if you have restrictions like plugged radiator and heater cores that need to be flushed then I'm sure you may have issues. I've heard that most issues though are caused by user error.. not following directions.

Depending how much is used , can ultimately cause restriction of flow. Use it as a temporary emergency measure, but if your keeping the vehicle long term, fix what needs to be fixed and get that coolant system back to factory spec. Hope this helps

@VenturiLife

@@justingreen8006 Holts Radweld used to use finely chopped linseed and resins if I remember correctly, but the formulation may have changed, it was an old way of doing it, far from a permanent fix, modern stop leaks use things like kevlar / organic fibres, minerals, sodium silicate etc. etc. They attempt to first block the leak with the fibres which then seal with the minerals / sodium silicate for a somewhat more permanent seal. Pepper was another one I've heard of, and cracking an egg in a cold system to try and fix a pinhole radiator leak, but that seemed like the most far-fetched and unlikely to work methods. I tried using K-Seal as I was trying to avoid Sodium Silicate, and it lasted a few days apparently then failed. All should be considered temporary fixes to keep you on the road until you can pull the engine and fix the headgasket or radiator or whatever, and cannot be expected to fix major leak issues. The true fix is of course mechanical, but I once had a Ford in-line 6 that had it's blown headgasket fixed with sodium silicate and it lasted 2-3 years until I sold the car, and never gave other coolant issues really. That was under advice from a trusted mechanic as I didn't have thousands to fix the engine at the time. He certainly told me it may not seal / work. It is VERY important to follow the instructions and best to use the stop leaks diluted with the coolant or water. I recently found out that some are more chemical in nature and require coolant flush, water and addition of stopleak then drain, and coolant refill, so not all of these are the same depending on purpose. Once again they are only good for certain failure conditions and cannot solve everything.

wouldn't recommend it for a permanent fix but as long as you follow the directions you'll be fine. over 100,000 miles after I put mine in and still good to go. but if you put it in without running your car for the designated time and you don't follow any other instructions listed it may clump up and not work properly. but ultimately if it leaks fix it... YOUR SELF if possible.
