In this episode we had our dads try food from Colombia 🇨🇴
Coming from the home of cumbia, our dads tried some of Colombia's iconic dishes: Arepa, bandeja paisa, ceviche de camaron, brevas con arequipe, ajiaco, aguapanela, and patacon. Let's see what our dads think!

If they said that ajiaco is like a broth, it was wrong made. Ajiaco is very thick , and has the consistency of the mixture of 3 different kinds of potatoes. Its not packed with vegetables. And you add cream on top, with a side of white rice

The Ajiaco is from Bogotá and it's colder than other cities in Colombia. (With climate change it's actually a lot warmer.now).. But y'all forgot the crema de leche and alcaparras (capers). It's not cilantro, it's Guasca, a Colombian herb we use specifically for Ajiaco. I'm from the Pacific coast (Buenaventura) and grew up in Houston. We have different ceviches. With mayo/ketchup it's "cóctel" de camarón. My ceviche is with ketchup , red onion, cilantro, lime juice, & hot sauce, , which we call 'ceviche rojo'. It's delicious with some patacones or tostones. (Double fried plantain) Try it! You can also do a cóctel recipe with mushrooms if you're vegan or chicken if you don't like shellfish. The brevas are figs in a sweet syrup. The cheese is called queso cuajada. It's one of my favorite cheese. U can literally put it on anything. And the arequipe or dulce de leche is so good! These desserts are typically eaten during Christmas time (starts in November for the Christmas obsessed people🤣) Last but not least the aguadepanela is one of my fave drinks on a hot day. But when Colombians are sick, we drink it hot with like ginger cinnamon sticks and cloves. We might even add cheese (cuajada or campesino)

Colombian from the northern coast here. Lovely to see a variety of plates from many regions from my homeland. Gotta be the one who point it out: Thats not ceviche neither colombian version of ceviche. Thats called coctel de camarón (Shrimp cocktail) and in my opinion is far better than any ceviche

I've never had it, but it sounds good. That fig, cheese and caramel sounds good. Earlier I went to the store and was tempted to get a fig jam with goat cheese and toast. I should have gotten it as that is the closest to what they served.

I love this series. I am a white dude from the south east I've always been fascinated by the variety in Central America cultures and cuisines, really all Spanish cultures. I would love to see you guys do a deep dive on all the more common Hispanic cultures we have in the US. This series was the deciding factor for me in taking up Spanish lessons. What is It? It's boring food no originality in anything, it's all like Puerto Rico/Cuban. Bandeja Paisa Will always beat your Sancocho that we have as well. Nothing in your cuisine we have not seen, but go explore Colombian Cuisine and it's more diverse than the Dominican Republic.

Nicaraguan food next. Fritanga (with gallopinto, queso frito, chancho, carne y pollo, ensalada nica, tajadas and cacao to drink), nacatamal con pan, milca soda and a cacao, baho or vigoron (hard to decide on one, love them both), quesillo, enchilada nica, and for dessert a slice of 3 leches cake (originated in Nicaragua; 2 or 3 countries claim the same),, and some bunuelos and a pico (sweet bread). Boom, did the work for you guys lol. I suggest " Sabor Nicaragüense" on Western Ave or LA 27 in that same area, there are about 4 or 5 Nica restaurants in one spot near Pico/Union.

that´s the real Pink Sauce. just mayo and ketchup. ripped Plantain on everything for the sweetness. and on the bandeja paisa, you would want to mix every ingredient on an plate then eat it combined. and the arepa can be grilled to add that smoke flavour. we have a device to place the arepa directly on the fire to have the grill texture, depending on the type of arepa it's better than using a pan.

If you think that traditional Colombian food is too greasy, too many calories and large portions, it is because we come from peasant families and muleteers who worked since dawn until sunset, so it takes a lot of energy to endure the long hours of work.

ajiaco is made with guascas, so it wasn't cilantro or oregano and it's arracacha instead of pumpkin. honestly i love ajiaci

That ajiaco needed the cream and capers. Plus it's too thin. It's supposed to be thicker, thickened by the starch of the potatoes, which uses 3 kinds. BTW, the herb they're all trying to guess is called guasca. That's what gives it its distinctive flavor.

As a Hispanic person, I don't see how any type of Hispanic could have that much of a problem with another types food. Like there will probably always be some type of beans, some type of rice, and an acceptable protein lol and none of the spices are too exotic

As a man married to a Colombian woman, they could have picked a stronger Colombian dish than the ceviche. Sorry but it's really not that good compared to Peruvian, Ecuadorian and Mexican ceviches. I honestly wouldn't even call it a ceviche. I mean it's ok but not distinctive enough in my opinion.

@normanosborn1277 they have some flavorful dishes. But regular day to day food can definitely be on the bland side. But to be fair Colombia is pretty regional and I have not tried any of the coastal Colombian food yet.
