The text in the video: In Source A, the writer feels that the team of explorers were utterly helpless in face of the extreme weather. He uses personification a number of times to show how dominant the storm was. He states the mountain was ‘in its grip’ and says ‘the storm took control’. As readers we get the sense that the writer felt powerless and victimised by the extreme weather. ‘In its grip’ might also be reflecting the fact that the writer felt trapped and unable to escape the storm. In Source B, the writer also appears to feel powerless. For example, he states ‘I was almost helpless’ which seems to suggest his sense of fear and vulnerability. Although his perspective is that he was ‘helpless’, his list of complaints include the fact that his ‘beard froze’ and the hyperbole of ‘my heart seemed paralyzed’. A ‘headache came on’ which in comparison to ‘fatalities’ on Everest show that the writer’s perception of being ‘helpless’ is not quite as dramatic or accurate as he may have believed.

@graceflowers76147 жыл бұрын
Thank you this was really helpful! Do you have to pick out certain words in this question to analyse aswell? Or is just the methods okay?
@MrsWhelansEnglish7 жыл бұрын
Well, the mark scheme says 'textual reference' so it doesn't DEMAND quotes. I think that you could probably get a level 5 without quotes but for anything higher, I would expect students to zoom in on the odd word. The key is analysing methods so it seems likely you'd talk about language. If you then don't focus on certain words then I'm fairly sure you'd lose out on some marks

Thank you so much it makes so much sense and I understand it more

Jack Finn you are comparing perspectives AND analysing methods which DO include language & structure. 2nd bullet point AND mark scheme are explicit on this
@CallOfDutyVideos997 жыл бұрын
so mrbruff is wrong? thought he was a legend
@MrsWhelansEnglish7 жыл бұрын
He IS a legend and this question is about perspectives and points of view.BUT the mark scheme for this exam explicitly states 'writers' methods'. Here is what AQA gave as a top mark response to this question... The writers of Source A and Source B have contrasting perspectives on the weather due to their very diverse circumstances: Matt Dickinson is facing a life and death ordeal on Everest and Arthur Munby is exploring the silent snowscape of 1867 London. By employing the first person in the form of a factual account and a diary extract, the writers offer an insight into their different perspectives on time, place and atmosphere. In Source A, Dickinson conveys a strong feeling of vulnerability when faced with an unprecedented storm. He achieves this through personifying the wind as a ‘bullying force’, thus implying Mother Nature is treating the climbers with contempt, punishing them, maybe even toying with them, until they experience nothing but fear and intimidation. This is in complete contrast to the writer of Source B who walks the streets of London in contemplative silence. His focus is on its aesthetic charm rather than its debilitating effects on the city and its homeless. Far from Dickinson’s view of the weather as a life-threatening force, Munby appreciates the positive transformation which the weather brings, using the phrase ‘an exquisite tracery of white branches’ to describe the beauty of the scene. As well as the visual changes, he is delighted at the muted sounds that the snow brings in comparison to the ‘roar and rush of wheels’ that the city usually suffers. This is in direct contrast to the writer of Source A, who is terrified by the noise of the storm. His fear of this almost supernatural force is again shown through the use of personification. The choice of the nouns ‘scream’ and ‘howl’, words which are more commonly used as adjectives, emphasises the horror of the situation, a horror that culminates in the death of eight climbers.

@MrsWhelansEnglish7 жыл бұрын
If it says 'differences' then really just focus on that. You might find they have a similar but different perspective (if that makes sense?!) E.g They both have powerful reactions to weather; one is focused on beauty and the other on the danger of extreme conditions. Something like that would be ok but don't confuse yourself!
