Parachute Adams by Charlie Craven

5 жыл бұрынThe Parachute Adams is without a doubt, one of today's most popular patterns. The high visibility wing coupled with the lower floating parachute hackle team up to provide a solid fish-catching silhouette with angler appeal. The PA can imitate any type of mayfly, even though it is too dark for some and too light for others. It also works as a caddis when skittered, a spinner pattern and a general attractor. This fly is versatile! The tying sequence here also shows my method for tying in and wrapping a parachute wing and hackle. It is a bit different from most others and, I think, a vast improvement.
RECIPE:
HOOK: #12-22 TMC 100 SP-BL
THREAD: DARK GRAY VEEVUS 14/0
TAIL: BROWN AND GRIZZLY SPADE HACKLE FEATHERS
WING: MCFLYLON, COLOR OF CHOICE
HACKLE: BROWN AND GRIZZLY ROOSTER CAPE OR SADDLE FEATHERS
BODY: ADAMS GRAY SUPERFINE DUBBING

after two months of searching I finally was able to find some greater Canadian goose feathers! Apparently there's some kind of insane rule about selling migratory bird feathers! At least that's what I heard from a couple places. The place I bought them from was trying to get clarification from the feds about this and couldn't get anyone to answer the question. So they finally said what the heck and shipped them out to me. You're absolutely correct that a size #14 is pretty much the max size you'll get from these biots. They're really perfect for #16 and #18. Thanks again for all the tips. Who knew I've been tying parachutes wrong for all these years!😁

As a lefty, I love this guy’s vids. Also, straight up: this is the best parachute instruction I’ve seen. I tie this bad boy just like this and with also a quill body. Also in pale yellow. Oatka Creek Brown trout don’t stand a chance on this one.

Wrapping that concave unity of feathers is key in parachutes if you want maximum body profile in the surface film. Nice job! Another of my fav to fish in surface film is an X-caddis and change up body colors for hatch varieties. Peace.

Is there any disadvantage in tying say a purple colored post instead of a white post for this fly? I figure the white post is better for matching the hatch, but a colored post would be better for visibility.

Charlie, so glad to see you are making more videos. I really like the way you dissect every step and offer work-arounds for those tricky situations. I order some long goose biots from your Website (like the new formate BTW) . I tried them on a #12 dry fly hook but the most I could get was about 4+ turns which wasn't enough to cover the abdomen. I also noticed that the striping which gives the fly in your video such a great look is very faint or non-existent in the lighter colors i.e., Light Cahill. I got creative with a Sharpie and it came out OK. Any suggestions before I go back to using stripped peacock herl?

Tom Cooper it’s really rare to find a goose biot long enough for a size 12. #14 is about as big as I can manage. As for the dark edge, it has to be a natural Canada goose biot, not a white domestic version dyed to whatever color. Only the wild critters have that dark edge.

excellent video charlie...u must have enjoyed making it as i did watching it and in all the excitement you never clipped the butt ends of the 2 hackles...i dont know about colorado but here on the east coast no deserving trout would ever eat that particular fly even if you were able to get your tippet through the eye to tie it on..

Are you a left handed tyer?I am and you could wick your cement down base of wing instead of on hackle less likely to make mess on dubbing. Good tying enjoyed it . Been tying for60 yrs but pick up tricks from other tiers all the time. Thanks Jim😊

Hey Charlie. Why do you wrap your post in the opposite direction that you tie the body of the fly? I’m right handed so I wrap counter clockwise as you say but I’m not sure I understand why.

Hi Charlie, love your videos BTW. I’m an old fly tier of about 25 years and cut my teeth on calf body posts and wings. :) In this video you said that you use half a strand of mcflylon for a #16 fly. How about for a # 14 and a #12 and so forth? I’m trying to get a feel for how to use the mcflylon most effectively.

Four points I'd like to offer: 1. Barry Ord Clark's method is even better - turning the hook to whip finish the hackle turns. 2. Charlie is right about the excellent Tiemco 16/0 thread. Semperfli 18/0 is even better - if you can find a source. Outstanding thread. 3. Charlie has some great Canada goose biots there. Difficult to find Canada goose biots that long. They make beautifully marked bodies. 4. If you can find a source, Tiemco High Viz Dry Wing makes the best post material. Expensive, but worth it.

1. Whip finishing on the post creates too much bulk and fidgety vise machinations for my taste. Those extra wraps don’t need to be on the post. 2. CFB has piles of 18/0 Semperfli…not hard to find at all. 3. You’re right. 4. Dry wing is cool stuff, no doubt, but I’ve not found it to be any better in this application. My two cents.

Thanks, Charlie. @@CharliesFlyBox You tie super-clean dressings. The 18/0 Semperfli is so thin and strong, a four turn whip finish on the post amounts to near nil extra bulk. The High Viz Dry Wing is just SO visible, particularly as the light fails. Perhaps try it? I use the orange, which just pops!

Nice, very well done Charlie. You can soak your Biots in a little Mineral oil or Vegetable oil to make them not so brittle it doesn't take much.

Charlie...nice job and thanks. HOWEVER...I was excited to see how you were going to fix that common problem you mentioned whereby the hackle(s) sometimes decide to spin and orient themselves opposite the way you would like them to wind. Since they apparently did not twist, we never got to see the fix. Do you have any reference for that fix somewhere?

Charlie, Thank you for the great content! I learn each time I watch one of your videos. I started tying the Parachute Adams per your instructions, but I have a question about the post. How long should the wrapped post be (the part that will be wrapped with the hackle)? I'm tying a size 14 and want to be sure I'm proportioning the post correctly. Can you provide some guidance? I hesitate to give an actual measurement as it will change proportionally with the size of the fly you’re tying, but the post is about 20% of the shank length tall…the distance from the hook eye to the wing is about the same as the height of the post, and the wing is tied in at about the 80% point. You could maybe stretch that post to closer to 25% if you wanted to heavily hackle the fly. Hope that helps!

Charlie, beautiful fly tying. Q: Why not apply the head cement on the post prior to wrapping the hackle? Q: When the hackle is wrapped, why not put dubbing on the thread so that there’s no bare thread as you bring it around the hook towards the eye? Q: Does the long poly post not interfere with the flight during casting? Twisting or landing upside down or sideways?

I don’t like putting head cement on the post first as it can gum up the hackle in the case of a mis-step. After the fact is my best bet..

I do t like to tie off the hackle with dubbed thread as that extra bit of thread thickness can push the hackle up into a cone and reduce its surface area. I’ve don’t it with the tiniest amount of dubbing but don’t see it as a huge improvement.

I’m not sure how the parachute adams got its reputation for being a tough fly to tie. I find these to be almost idiot-proof once you have a routine. There are so many ways to tie one effectively, you can just find what works for you and that’s that. To be honest, hares ears, practically on page one of “fly tying for dummies” have always given me a tougher time. I guess it goes to show that everyone’s different in that regard.

Canada goose biots are not available commercially in this natural color. You have to get them from a hunter. I would be happy to include one in your next order. If you email me through the Shop and remind me. I have a limited supply but I am happy to share.. How’s that for checking my work?

Your way to tie off from the parachute post to the hook eye leaves a piece of thread visible. Why not cover it with a tiny bit of dubbing? A bare piece of thread is ugly

I have a couple of suggestions for video production. If you are going to use a black background, use light grey posting material as it will look white without over exposing as in your video. The other suggestion would be preset your exposure setting off a 18 % grey card. You need to be able to disable the auto metering of the camera.
