Hello Kevin.! I live up in Washington State and I really appreciate your clarity on instructions and very clean knotwork.! I feel you give great direction.!!!! Especially for the complexity of some of the knots you are teaching.. I picked it up just fine with a little bit of pausing and patience. Youve inspired me to start my own business doing paracord.. Thank you for your generosity of knowledge.

Hey, just a heads-up, word of caution... the monkey fist self defense lanyard (and also the billiard ball lanyard on your site) may present some legal problems. There are restrictions on carrying 'slungshots' (not a mispelling) or weighted monkeyfist knots with lanyards in most states. A more direct problem though may be other prohibitions depending on where you are or are shipping to. As an example in Florida it is illegal to manufacture, cause to manufacture, sell or expose for sale something of this type...many other states may have similar prohibitions. It might simply go unnoticed, or perhaps it might even be ignored if it is, however, listing it as a 'self-defense' lanyard will probably not help . . As a side note, fine steel lead or tungsten shot inside a small rubber, leather, silk or other pouch instead of a single solid mass has numerous advantages. Like a dead blow hammer, energy transfer is very high and when hitting the head that, unlike cracking/crushing bone and breaking the skin likely with a solid piece, instead jolts the skull in a way that makes loss of consciousness more likely.

I've watched a few TUT's in my time and this one is great until the end. You would benefit using contrasting colors to enhance your tut and make easier for following along. Like to see you update this with different colors. Can't finish the one I am making.

Hey Kevin. Thanks for all the great videos you put on KZfaq. In regards to this video (Monkey's fist self defense lanyard) I am really struggling at the end. At around 11 minutes into the video, after you've done the crown knot. Could you possibly post a video of just this sequence using very different color paracord so one can tell the difference. Thanks a lot. Regards Patrik

Hi there, Thanks for all of your informative videos! I've been paracording for about a year now, making bracelets and monkey fists and still having fun with it. Right now, I was asked to make a monkey fist with a 1" ball with 42" of snake knot weave. How do you go about calculating how much cord is needed for this?!?!? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hey you make great videos. I have tied the moneys knot before and know my rescue knots for technical rescue and confined space rescue so I can easily learn new knots. My question is how much (feet) of each color paracord should I start with. I have never made a 1 1/2 size before never with such a long lanyard. Thanks happy tying.

I'm planning on placing an order for a couple of the steel balls you sell, but for now I just used a golf ball. It's by no means as good as steel, but I didn't want to wait until I could get some steel. I figured golf balls are designed to take a huge amount of force on impact from a small and concentrated area, so it'll work. I can't wait to get the steel balls so I can make two with the steel balls and turn the three of them into a Bolo.

Kevin: this is a great video and has helped me to make this item. i do have one problem though. The black and olive tones are really difficult to see when it comes down to the manrope knot. ive tried several times already and still can not get it. Is there anyway that you can do a tutorial on this knot with two more vibrant colors, as it would be alot eaiser to follow?

Gang, the monkey fist is a tool used on ships to throw a small cord to the dock or to another ship. The small cord is then used to pull a heavier mooring rope over. Very cool Sailor's invention. In Vernacular, wearing one as a retired Sailor indicates how long you have been sober by the size of the fist.

What confuses me is that the cord need to make lanyard should be included when making the fist. When I watch the video for the fist it has the length needed for fist but doesn't included length needed to make lanyard and it doesn't look like the fist and lanyard are four totally separate pieces or cordage. So I guess what I'm asking is once the fist is done should there be enough cord left over to put with another piece of cordage to make the "four" strand braid at length?

While these can be somewhat helpful in self defense they were used as weights to a heaving line to throw ashore or to another ship. It's a knot around a weight. With a slipknot to loop around your wrist. If they have the wieght, they have your wrist. Keep that in mind.
