One night dive I participated with school students was off Julian Rock Byron Bay. I was slowly swimming with the torch shinning at 90 degrees to the direction I was swimming. For some reason I shone the light in front of me to see a huge sleeping sting ray with his spear sticking up at a 60 degree angle from the bottom. I stopped with my chest 30 centimetres from the spear of the sting ray. I gently backed up and went on my way.

I live in Australia now but was born in Fiji and left when I was 7…… now 42 and yearning to live a simple life back home away from stress, money, traffic and all the other “great” things that come with modern life in a country like this…. So, yes, in a heart beat I’d live the rest of my days there 🤙🏽

I appreciate you taking the time to go diving on the reef, spearing fish and doing all the things I will not do but want to see. I do not enjoy entering the food chain and a night dive sounds completely terrifying to me. With that said, it was phenomenal footage of an incredible experience. Thanks for the vicarious dive! Cheers!

@@nobytes2 very true! I believe I watched the original Jaws movie too early as a kid and have had my own shark experiences off of Cape Cod. They have tainted my idea of the Ocean. I’m impressed with their lack of fear.

Hi from a pom. I used to live in Auzzie back in the 80s and loved it. You asked if anyone had been spear fishing at night and I have done this off the coast of England, in the north sea. Obviously slightly cooler water but we fished a few of the many thousands of wrecks off the Yorkshire coast. It was really phenomenal until the great white sharks started patrolling our waters some years ago. I used to fish for Cod, Haddock, Ling, Sea Bream and my favourite the sea Bass, so tasty. We also would only take what we needed for a good feed and helped clean up as we went, removing plastics when possible from the sea life habitat. It is great to watch you guys in such remote places, I still wonder if I am young enough to come back there and have another go, but if you ever come to England, I still have my 2 boats if you wanted an adventure. I am sure there are many undiscovered places around Scotland still to explore. Thanks for the entertaining vids, stay safe. Nigel.

Az just answering your questions, yeah mate I have dived at night. Initially I found it pretty terrifying but then I became kid of hyper focussed on the small field of view under my dive torch, at that point all fear dissipated and I thoroughly enjoyed the night life that ensued. Amazing what night life comes out hey. The village I'm guessing is in Vanuatu and I reckon I would be happy there for quite some time, I love the shell and coral flooring but the highlight over there is the people. Great show, thanks for sharing.

What a stunning place that is Az! I could stay there for a couple years easy! About the night diving, I've done it a fair few times in Curaçao in the Caribbean. When doing research on coral reproduction we had to night dive to catch the spawn of the corals. Besides twilight diving it's my favorite time of day to dive. You're spot on with describing it as eery yet peaceful. We often had massive tarpon swooping in right in front of our face as they tried to hunt in the beam of our flashlights.

I use to do night diving with my uncle on Kings reef just off Kurrimine beach. I was never to worried about dangerous sharks but the idea of a crocodile coming out of Maria creek which is right next to the reef crossed my mind from time to time. The allure of easy crays was to great.

Any part of Vanuatu is amazing. Northern Vanuatu, i know very little about. Most people seem to go to Tanna, where the active Volcano Mount Yasur is, if my research is correct. I just saw Barry from Old Sea Dog go there, was pretty amazing, but isn't a hide away by any stretch. To be in that place you asked about for years, , one would need to be up on making bread and tortillas to be happy I guess. And Beer ? And have all the ingredients in a safe place like inside of several sealed cans ? Definitely lots of yeast. Kava ? I've done some with it. You sleep well when you use it. Seafood ? Would love to get lobsters. And maybe shrimp ?Shrimp are a tricky little harvest, easy if you have the right type of net. I guess they aren't exciting enough for you guys to show ? One boat was making ginger beer ? Another a type of "Pineapple beer or wine" which they love. I'll bet its 8 percent or more ? Delos used to make pretty much rum, sugar achohol. I'll bet it would have been better with cane as the starting part. Too much for a boat though.

I've seen folks try to snorkel out from shore, get fish, and try to make it back. The sharks are up on that from what I've seen and your lucky to make it back without an attack. So, some sort of boat , dingy, something would be imperative.
