Talk: Parametric Thinking
The newly formed Dutch studio, yfx lab explores the overlap between design, science, and technology. Focusing on a data-driven approach, yfx lab investigates the possibilities of building and controlling complex systems and algorithms without losing the ability to manage, adapt, and design.
Using a parametric approach, a bridge is made between technology and design, making it possible to merge the best of both worlds in a harmonic and artistic way. yfx lab's ongoing research explores the creative collaboration between humans and machines, by using a workflow where space is made for unplanned events and happy accidents. Making use of parametric design, GLSL shaders, and machine learning we are slowly shifting our roles from designers to curators.
TouchDesigner is at the heart of this pipeline and during this talk Roy and Time Gerritsen will share their process and outline how they approach projects in both the artistic and commercial fields. Finally they will discuss the technical side of how they build patches that are modular, experimental, and highly customizable.
Presenter: Roy Gerritsen
Roy Gerritsen (1980) is founder and creative director of Boompje studio. A small design boutique build on passion and focused on music-related visuals.
After graduating (with honors) from the Utrecht school of arts (HKU), Roy devoted his time to music visualization. First through the medium of print (doing design work for cd covers, party flyers and vinyl sleeves) and slowly moving into the more complex medium of animation, motion graphics and creative coding.
He is driven by his passion to innovate and determined to create a synergy between design and technology. Roy is co-founder of the newly formed Amsterdam based, yfx lab and currently is focusing on building generative design systems within TouchDesigner.
Presenter: Tim Gerritsen
Tim Gerritsen (1982) has been flipping bits ever since he was able to touch a keyboard. Starting on the Commodore 64 in the late 80s, his interest grew from computer security and webdevelopment to artificial intelligence and creative programming.
As a creative coder, Tim helped realizing several installations for clients like Coca-cola, Philips, T-mobile, Volvo and BMW.
He's the co-founder of the newly formed Dutch studio yfx lab and is mainly focussing on the development of TouchDesigner c++ plugins, GLSL shaders and system architecture.
Tim is also actively involved in the development of TDNeuron, an opensource machine learning framework purely written in TouchDesigner using GLSL.
Tim Gerritsen currently lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Anyone else hear a high-pitch tone throughout the whole video? I think it's only on the right channel so i can just mute that side, but still.. . Woah.

Seems all the day1 content had some ground loop noise. We'll see if it can be improved for the other day1 vids but day2 sounds clean.

i type this so you dont make the same mistake as i have, be VERRY carefull when working for/with Roy gerritsen, make sure you have everything on paper SIGNED, and dont do anything till you have confirmation SIGNED on PAPER, so you can sue when he decides its not necesary to pay. also be verry carefull when sharing ideas with roy, he is the type of guy who runs with it and leaves you with nothing. i think his brother tim is a verry skilled and trustworthy person. just be carefull when dealing with roy. ( tim is the guy with all the technical knowhow, so you dont realy need roy actualy )
