The last pilot is a US fighter pilot, but new to this sport. He is beyond humble and cool. But it looks like a microburst just came down on his left front part of the wing like Thor's hammer. He should have checked, and double checked the weather that morning, sure. He checked the night before. Regardless, unless he was expecting this, there was nothing he could do. It is like 3-4 seconds. At 300', then bam, on the ground with a broken back and neck, lacerated spleen, etc. He said to me that he was just baffled why he survived this when so many have lost their lives. He is beyond humble and kind, but he hit that crazy invisible wall of a microburst at low altitude. Him saying to double check the weather prior to take off _WILL_ save some lives! But truth is, most would have still flown in that. Like an avalanche, mother nature just nailed him, and there was really to no stopping it. I think we are just all thankful that he survived.

I asked in another post, but is there a reason a flexible carbon or glass fiber rod across the ends could not provide some compression to prevent collapse like this. I want to take up this sport and trying to understand the variables. Usually if something isn't done there isn't a reason for it, I am just not seeing it.
@evanwindom3265
@evanwindom3265 4 жыл бұрын
@Tim Naas Aviation weather doesn't generally contain detailed information about small fields, apart from automated observations made by equipment on the field. The video recommends checking winds aloft data, but that doesn't cover those low altitudes.
@evanwindom3265
@evanwindom3265 4 жыл бұрын
Aren't microbursts normally associated with thunderstorms? It does look like he got hit with some moving air, either from the top or more likely from the side, but I don't think a microburst (by definition) is to blame here.
@ClearAdventure
@ClearAdventure 4 жыл бұрын
@@evanwindom3265 That is just something the pilot expressed to me. But you are correct, we don't know, and sadly never will. What we do know is that wind he hadn't checked since the night before collapsed his foil. And I for one am just thankful he survived.

Always becareful around lakes especially during times of the day when the wind is shifting, mornings and evenings. Lakes create their own wind due to the cooler air sitting over them. Shear and turbulence is not uncommon around lakes. Mike Wakefield said he found information that the wind between 200 and 300 ft there was a difference in wind velocity that created shear. I've never found a site that can give so accurate information to tell you the changes in wind speed and shears every hundred of feet. Also, wind shear can be extremely localized to a small area which would be impossible to predict. Almost daily wind shears occure around lakes and the higher the relative inland winds the greater wind shear around a lake especially in the morning and evening.

I don't think any pilot could have righted the glider once in collapsed at such a low altitude. The best was to prevent this is to fly at a higher altitude so there is enough time for the chute to reopen, or throw the reserve. Altitude is the pilot's friend.

The last crash clip just happened a few weeks ago on 25 June. He's done an aftermath interview type video with another guy and talks about his take aways and possible mistakes. Very humbled dude. Seems like a great guy too. Turns out he's a professional pilot as well. I'd chalk his biggest mistake to being too anxious to fly and having that added pressure of a buddy to fly with. His doomed flight was indeed in the early morning on the day after a delayed flight due to weather. Glad to see he's recovering quickly. According to his testimony, he's ready to get back in the air. Of course, once he buys new equipment.

Tucker actually mentions in this video that "some things are out of our control" such as sudden thermals and wind shifts. Grant was flying in some mountain/canyon areas when he died. Given that he was a professional pilot before getting into paramotors, it's very likely that a similar wind shift is to blame, and there is only so much you can do about that.

Been looking at Paramotor schools here in the UK and not sure where to go. even the crash videos don't put me off, I think theyre essential to see whats gone wrong and why. I'm a former MX rider, been there with the sports bikes too and also stock car racing. I think this may be my next adventure. My only real big worry would be dealing with a collapse. OMG! That last one really shook me. I been wanting to get into the sport for a while now but not so much now. I been toying with the idea of inventing an inflatable paramotor wing or at least an inflatable chamber that runs the width of the wing to prevent the wing from collapsing like that. Of course the wing would still have to be flyable if the inflated chamber loses pressure.

A rookie (about 20 flights) took off. And (probably because of the briefing) focused on the tree. Crashed straight into it. No damage done. Just about an hour to get the glider of the tree.

Watching in slow motion, it is striking, how the leading edge moves down and back so forcefully, from the left (roughly half). The cell openings are pressed down and back against the lines, over the course of just a few frames. There wasn't cloud cover to show it, but it isn't hard to visualize the leading edge of a wing being pushed down by the 'crashing wave' of the shear layer. If you google "Kelvin-Helmholtz Waves", they demonstrate strong shear pretty dramatically. At my local hill, the morning mist can reveal some pretty gnarly inversion and shear behaviors. I've 'para-waited' more than once, to see how they play out. I wonder as well, whether the change in wind gradient, as he approached the tree line, complicated things (slowing the air more, at an elevation closer to the shear, increasing the differential and the resulting turbulence). Pure speculation, but I have to wonder if he would have encountered this shear, if he had stayed over the airport a bit longer and perhaps climbed to 600ft, before heading out.

I don't know. It seems to me like the paramotor community is so focused on safety that it won't be long before the airlines will adopt the technology and training. I'm sure the paramotor accident rate per 100,000 hours flown is better than theirs. Frameless is probably cheaper so ticket costs will be lower. Smart people will be flying frameless and dumb people will be flying the 737 MAX and A330.

I am so glad you are taking the high road on this whole Grant Thompson accident thing... Yeah, the guy died on a paramotor, and the fact that you are not capitalizing on it... that is awesome !!!!

My heart goes out to the Grant Thompson family. I went to the memorial on Saturday, got to talk to his brother-in-law. I have dreamed of flying a Paramotor, and lived some of it every time I saw him fly by. It was fun to see how effortless it was to be in the air. I miss seeing your smiling face, you were famous, but you would take time to just talk to me. I have struggled this last week thinking about what could have gone wrong; now knowing makes it a little easier. Too Infinity and beyond Grant; you were doing what you enjoyed.

The last one is the only thing holding me back from taking paragliding. I don't know how frequently this happens, but judging by the number of identical cases available on youtube I'd say too often for my taste. I don't mind doing dangerous stuff as long as what can go wrong depends on me. Putting myself at risk of a fatal accident caused by something I have no control over is something I can't cope with.
