I just put up a pen and now I better move it. It’s going to be too wet for the future pigs. This information just saved me future grief and pig problems. I would much rather minimize parasite potential than not. Thanks for this valuable information.

It needs to be well drained if possible. Concrete to feed and water on helps a lot and avoid feeding on the ground. They're going to make a mud hole if they can to cool of in just can't be the whole pen

@@HomesteadingtheHardWay thanks again. Also, I built the pen before I saw your pens. I didn’t build it strong enough. I will build very much like yours, 4 x4 posts at 4’ spacing, including a loading ramp with appropriate gates. I will definitely keep a spare empty pen when/if I expand or just need a fresh pen to rotate into. I’m on 24 acres and have several other suitable well-drained sites for my pens.

I love your videos , thank you very much ! You've helped me alot since I've started. I do have a question , clean penns , dry penns .... I have 5 pigs , still small 30lbs and I'm still learning , I have been told they like mud and have access to water so they can stay cool and wet when they like , so I've kept 1 small penn wet just for that reason , adjoined to a dry penn , where they eat , I'm going to deworm. My pigs this morning , and clean the penns but my question is am I doing this wrong? Wet penn ? I dont have concrete , it's just a shady spot fenced in so they dont get ga sun beating on them , let me know what you think please , thanks again
@HomesteadingtheHardWay
@HomesteadingtheHardWay Жыл бұрын
You're doing fine , they do need a mud hole to cool off in . We worm at weaning usually about 30 lbs then worm them again at about 100 lbs for meat pigs . Unless there's a problem we don't worm them again before slaughter. I use ivermectin injections if possible, if you can break the life cycle of the parasite you've got it beat . Reinfection is the issue just try to have where the pigs eat clean and dry

@HomesteadingtheHardWay
@HomesteadingtheHardWay 3 жыл бұрын
It's seems to help but I'm not sure how much .there's a lot of things help a little if you do them all it adds up . Clean as possible pens ,bleach shelters , lime ,rotation, regular worming helps the most , careful with introducing new animals. What your shooting for is worming twice a year as a precaution instead of every two weeks because of a heavy parisite load and immediate reinfection

@@bellatordeveritas1638 in the old days they used lye mixed in soaked corn , it got rid of the worms and the pig too half the time the way they tell it . Then they started using arsenic , then they went to keeping pigs on a floor all to control parrisites . It's not a problem on modern farms because the pigs never touch dirt so people have forgotten how hard they are to handle or get rid of , used to be 50 percent mortality or more on a hog farm was just normal . Vitamin deficiencies, parrisites and pneumonia etc took a toll now we have good suppliment for the feed , antibiotics and wormer . People won't use them ?!

Sometimes it can take months for them to come back if the pigs pull them down too far , Biggest thing is pump the feed to her while nursing if she's a good milker she might need 25 or 30 lbs a day plus a pound per pig if they're eating . Bread or sweets are the fastest way to put some finish back on
