This dad is so real, and honest. Of course he was shocked..the realization that your son has a life time of painful surgeries ahead of him, bullying, etc.. All birth defects cause anxiety for parents and family. The father's tears show his capablity for empathy for his newly born son's journey.. it will be a long, arduous journey at times. Thank God that sweet baby has a father that loves him so unconditionally.

Y'all are wrong for what you say about this father. He sat there in a hospital waiting for his perfect baby boy and that's not how it panned out. Imagine knowing your child is different. Imagine all the hate and how strange their life will be. This dad wanted his son to have a normal life and in one minute all of those hopes were torn away. He was scared and you can't blame him for that.

Exactly! When a baby is born with any disability or deformities, the rest of their life is going to be hard due to such cruel people. They will be treated differently and not in a good way.

Agreed! All parents want the simplist path in life for their children. The one not marred with cruelty and physical limitations. Knowing that you can’t do what others can do so easily can be hard for adults; let alone children who are equipped with imaginations and hopes beyond their wildest dreams.

I agree that it's natural to have those feelings at the time, but what's harder to rationalize is the way he still speaks about it now. It just seems dehumanizing. _He_ had to find it in _his_ heart to accept his child by listening to a Christina Aguilera song. _He_ felt the need to be congratulated by someone to reaffirm that _his_ life would be okay despite this. I could be wrong, but it seems like he's more concerned about how difficult his life will be instead of how difficult his son's life will be.

I have treacher Collins syndrome and I know my mum and dad were frightened when I was born at 27 weeks. I completely understand the parents thoughts and feelings even now. I have have 14 surgeries and I don’t look like I did previously. I don’t hate the parents I love the fact they embraced Nathaniel and kept him. They are loving parents

This made me cry. My son was born with Goldenhar syndrome with Craniotomy facial abnormalities, profound gearing loss, bilateral cleft lip and palate, scoliosis, missing kidney, and missing ribs. We were young teenage parents and had him at only 27 weeks. My husband instantly fell in love with his son. Many surgeries followed over the years. We love him to death. He’s a miracle and did everything the doctors said he wouldn’t be able to do. The nurses and doctors tried to get us to put him in an institution but we refused. Many “professionals” told us it would be a better quality of life. I remember one saying look around, you don’t see people like him walking around. That’s the best place for him. I couldn’t do that to him and neither would his dad. Then we had our second child 8 years later. During an ultrasound we learned he would have a cleft lip. Immediately they told us we should get an abortion. They really pressured us but we didn’t give in. If we had gone through so much with our first, cleft lip was a walk in the park for us. Our next child was a girl, 4 years later. Then we were told she would have spina bifita and we should abort as well. We refused and she was born completely healthy. At the age of 2 she began to have seizures. Now she’s on medication to help with that. Out next and last daughter was diagnosed through ultrasound to have down syndrome. Again, the pressure to abort. We didn’t and she’s the smartest child I know and NO she was not born with Down syndrome. It’s sad how wrong the medical community can be. Imagine all those children aborted and in reality there is nothing wrong with them. Today we struggle because we decided I would stay home and not work because of all the appointments the children have. My employers were not understanding that I have disabled children. We struggle financially, and I do lots of things to help with our cost of living by making our own soaps, couponing, being used clothes or swapping them with others. I try my best. Today my oldest is now 21, he’s not ready to leave home and he does have a mentality of a 10 year old and he struggles with his self esteem and self worth. Because even though he’s had all these surgeries, he still looks noticeably different. When he was younger people would stare and say nasty things and hurtful things. I’d get so angry and scold them for doing that. My son said he always noticed people would stare or do a double take. He said it used to get him upset but now he ignores it. He’s sad though because he has not had a girlfriend. (Although, we are Christian and believe in Christian dating.) I tell one day God will send him someone.

So true. My third child has a genetic disorder which causes him to look different to the average kid. The bullying he was subjected to, particularly during high school was appalling and in the end forced him to drop out of school early. He was often called "freak" and taunted by kids chanting "Smeagol" because they said he looked like the Gollum character from Lord of the Rings. Parents need to teach their children from an early age that not all people look the same or behave the same way and to treat people kindly rather than with cruelty. Children can be cruel but empathy can be taught and I think kids can learn to put themselves in someone shoes as in, how would I feel if these horrible things were being said about me.

I don’t believe that any of the ultrasounds did not show this, something as grave as this. Someone would’ve known early in the pregnancy. Why was this a surprise? This is exactly what they look for in your 20 week ultrasound.

As a parent expecting, we all expect a perfect child. At first i was upset with the fathers words but i could only imagine how hard it was to swallow what was seen in the delivery room. All the emotional triumph, worry, questions then you think how society talks. People stare and children are honestly cruel. This is why i tell my own children, God makes no mistakes and everyone of us is not perfect but very special.

I think his reaction is pretty normal. They didn't know that the baby had any medical problems, it was their first child, he might not have been around children much. They aspected a standard looking baby, you would be in shock because they didn't know what was wrong and if he would be able to survive. If they knew this during the pregnancy they could have prepared themselves and get used to the idea, now it all came at once during a stressfull time. It took them a minute to let everything sink in and then they decide that their baby was beautiful no matter what. I think that's great.

I really appreciate the parents honesty. I’ve dealt a lot with mental health and it’s hard to face the backlash of being honest about the thoughts that you have in those moments. They seem to have raised him well and as a mom I can understand the shock and loss felt. I had difficulties with my first and it left me feeling robbed of a good experience and it’s tough for sure. I can’t wait to have a better time with my next but my experience doesn’t make me feel any less love for my girl.

Happy Horse no. They wanted tp do an amniocentesis but i refused. If she did have ds it wouldnt have mattered as far as aborting her like they asked. Which to me was insane. After i refused for a week they did the blood test that is 99% accurate and it showed she did not have it. I actually wanted her even more when i thought she did. Down syndrome wasnt new to me. I have a close friend with a Daughter who has it. I was worried about heart issues or the chances for cancer which can be raised but i was just at peace about it. We now know that she has a rare genetic disorder. She is developmentally delayed but is so smart cognitively. She has a feeding tube but is making progress. Slowly but its happening. She has sensory issued but not autism as far as we can tell. Shes had a lot of health issues in her short 2 years but im thankful for the health she does have.

TiffLove you are an amazing mom. Mine doesnt have down syndrome but i know how amazing those kids are. It made me so sad when they asked if i wanted to abort her when i was waiting on blood work. It was a definate no. I had fought so hard to keep her alive long enough to deliver her shere she had a chance to survive and here they were asking if i wanted to purposely kill her. It made me so mad. Thankfully i made it to 30w 5d until she was born and although she did spend 2 months in the NICU it would have been much longer if she was born as a micro preemie.

watch the second part.... the parents literally said we wanted a normal looking kid so we tried for another baby and when jacob came he was like so perfect like a porcelain doll. his face was beautiful. The mum contributed to this by saying i understood motherhood is so easy and beautiful when my second baby came. the mum said she couldn't look at his face for a year after birth. In the same video, Nathaniel said that kids, even high school kids bully him by saying he is non human, a monster. Then what is the difference between his own parents and those high school bullies. I understand you didn't get what you want but do you have to scream that on top of your lungs on national TV for all to hear, for one day your own son to hear these words from his own parents mouth.

I gave birth to my son Joshua in 2015. I was scared when he was born. He could only breathe when he cried and they had to take him immediately. He has Aperts syndrome which is one in 65,000. It occures spontaneously so I did nothing to cause it. I was personally shocked at his hands and feet which were fused at first, but as time went on other babies looked weird to me. There is a lot going on at these kinds of births. I myself was in labour for thirty eight hours. Don't be too harsh on parents that don't know what to think at first.

I know this would be a complete shock to parents that have a child with treacher Collins, and I know that the child would have a rough life but he and they would be fine. I have always thought children born with this, are super beautiful, I don’t know why, I just find them so beautiful. There was a movie about a boy that had this and had been home schooled, they decided he needed the interaction so his parents put him in public school. He had such a hard time at first but, he finally found a best friend, they were so close that the other kids began to accept him just the way he was. It was hard to watch what he went through but, his parents were amazing and everyone accepted him just as he was, all became good! I wish everybody, especially adults could see the beauty in every child equally. These kids have a hard life and do not need adults or children to treat them different. They are so precious.

As a nurse whose specialty is developmental disorders as well as severe mental illness, I have worked with Treacher Collins children. I would have immediately told those parents that same thing. "Your son will live a long, healthy, wonderful life" energized the room with my own joy to begin lifting their shock. They are just having natural shock of having to adjust to a new reality. I think OBGYN staff need to have at least 1 staff onsite who is experienced and trained to work with children with pervasive developmental disorders and craniofacial issues as well as other physiological birth congenital issues. Those parents should have not had to deal with staff's shock. that exacerbated their own shock and adjustment. It breaks my heart. If I had been there that would never have happened.

This dad was standing in his own shoes he is being raw and honest with how he was feeling and thinking in a surprise moment the nasty people with the rude comments are the deformed ones because your lacking empathy and sympathy for for this man would you rather he lie and say his first reaction was oh he is beautiful or perfect when those were not his true thoughts or feelings it only took the man a few hours to let it sink in and see this baby as not imperfect but perfect as a human being God bless this family and their children.

Ok ABC. Enough of these videos that are only partial stories that leave you hanging. Then you can’t find the rest of it. Bless those parents. Treacher Collins is I’m sure a shock to parents not expecting it but those born with can live good happy lives.

Suzanne Hedderly I AGREE!!! It is so doggone irritating when you watch 7-8 minutes of something and you don’t know what else happened! And, it’s not easy to find it either!! They should have the link in the description for crying out loud😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬

well I appreciate theyre honesty...in the end the parents saw what they're were doing so why degrade them? they're sharing they're story meaning only comes from they're perspective ..

They talk about their son like he is a freak it's really sad. Just the choice of words was like they were looking at the pictures online rather than talking about their own child. I hope he never sees this interview, that his parents were practically disgusted by him when he was born.

It’s true if you’re part of the low risk pregnancy they don’t really do much test or ultrasounds I only got two one when I was 14 weeks and another on late on my pregnancy and nothing after I really wanted one before I gave birth but it didn’t happened because they said it wasn’t necessary since it looks like everything it’s going good and you’re healthy.
