It looks amazing compared to what it would have been originally. At the same time you do see the first footage is slowed down to much, where the original footage had a lot less frames and IA filled it in. With some horses you also see AI has a lot of problems interpreting 4 legs moving in the same place and what to do with them when interpreting the fill in frames.

It's the aesthetic. Old world elegance. No doubt there have been countless adavances , but there are so many things that were lost between then and now. And to see the Eiffel tower when it was only a few years old is truly stepping back in time.

It’s just incredible to remember that the time we’re seeing here: everyone you know and have ever known weren’t even born yet, almost everything you own and use every single day was barely even a workable concept. It was almost a completely different world. Yes, people did most of the same things daily, we have always woken up, used the toilet, had breakfast, gone to work, had lunch, gone home, greeted our families, had dinner, rested in the living room, conversed with our families, maybe supper then gone to bed, but everything else we do now, they didn’t do then. Truly special.

I found myself thinking about the tram driver, looking so smart in his uniform. When he got up that morning, I wonder what was going on in his head. What did he have for his lunch? Did he enjoy his day? It made me think about the insignificant things we get wound up about, jobs we don't like, petty grievances. Seeming like a big deal at the time, but in 120 years from now we will be gone and none of it will matter!

Yes. France was France. But the following countries were also France. And resources were taken from these countries to build the beautiful cities of France. 1. **Algeria** - Considered an integral part of France, Algeria had been under French rule since 1830. 2. **Tunisia** - A French protectorate since 1881. 3. **Morocco** - Not yet a protectorate in 1896, but it came under French control in 1912. 4. **French West Africa (Afrique Occidentale Française, AOF)** - A federation of French colonial territories established in 1895, which included: - Senegal - French Sudan (modern-day Mali) - Guinea - Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire) - Dahomey (modern-day Benin) - Mauritania (included later in 1904) - Upper Volta (modern-day Burkina Faso, included in 1919) - Niger (included in 1922) 5. **French Equatorial Africa (Afrique Équatoriale Française, AEF)** - Formally established in 1910, but the territories were under French control by 1896, including: - Gabon - Middle Congo (modern-day Republic of the Congo) - Chad (included later in 1900) - Ubangi-Shari (modern-day Central African Republic) 6. **Madagascar** - Became a French colony in 1896. 7. **Somaliland (French Somaliland, modern-day Djibouti)** - Under French control since 1883. 8. **Indochina (French Indochina, established in 1887)** - Including: - Vietnam (Cochinchina, Annam, and Tonkin) - Cambodia - Laos (added in 1893) 9. **Lebanon and Syria** - These were under Ottoman control in 1896 and became French mandates after World War I. 10. **Comoros** - Became a French protectorate in 1886 and fully integrated by 1912. 11. **French Guiana** - A French overseas department since 1817. 12. **Guadeloupe and Martinique** - French overseas departments since the 17th century. 13. **Reunion Island** - A French overseas department since the 17th century. 14. **New Caledonia** - Annexed by France in 1853. 👍🏽🤡👍🏽

@@StarSprangledBanner @StarSprangledBanner France did not wait to have colonies in Africa to build magnificient cities. Place de la concorde for example was built in the 18th century, way before france set foot in the african continent. The apogee of french architecture way certainly a century before france arrived in Africa (french monarchy and Napoleon). Moreover, France did not make money on colonies, indeed, the revenues on taxes from the colonies never equaled expenses. However i agree for the Napoleon III architecture.

Oversimplification my friend. You are not taking into account the slums of Belleville, Menilmontant, and other neighborhoods of East Paris. It was only beautiful in the affluent westside and the center (and there, mostly the western end of the center). You are not taking into account the slums that were as bad if not worse than East London and the movie Oliver Twist in the periphery of Paris in what is today the municipalities that immediately border the city-proper, just outside of today's Peripherique ring road which at the time didn't exist. Paris was only beautiful for the affluent classes, just like NYC was at the time. No neighborhood in Paris or the suburbs looks as bad today as the worse neighborhoods looked back when this film was filmed. You just can't compare. And poor children under 16 worked, women could not vote, horses as you can see were overworked carrying rubble, and there was no anesthesia. And I say this as a history buff which is why I'm watching this video because I love history and Paris.

If the audible effects are produced with some reasonable effort to seem creatively accurate for the specific film with respect to what is seen without over-embellishment, then I would rather have that then random musical scoring, which was certainly not being performed for people going about their lives simply crossing streets.

If horses were plodding along in a clip-clop fashion and we were to hear horses rearing up on hind legs in terror or old-fashioned car horns where it doesn’t make sense, I could see your point as to “fake sound effects”. That would bother me as well. I just don’t see a string quartet or chamber orchestra playing on the side of the road either.

The contrast isn't mysterious if you read something about the history of tech at that time. Small transport vehicles were horse-drawn because there weren't any motors small enough to power them. OTOH big equipment like ships, trains, excavators, cranes, etc. could be powered by steam motors. That's how it was possible to build huge projects like the Brooklyn Bridge, transcontinental railroad, Eiffel Tower, and so on even though modern diesel and electric power hadn't been invented yet.

It puts the "individual life" in perspective....amazing!! thank you! sub, bel, lik'd....in the end, we all disappear as if we had never existed at all.....relax, release, let go.....not a single one of these individuals in this video, who believed their lives and what happened to them, what they hoped for or worried about was so important....not one of them is remembered.....every one of them, forgotten into history.....

?? Even the ancient Greeks had small construction cranes. By the Middle Ages there were cranes, lifts, pulleys, and other equipment that a modern builder would recognize. Of course they used horse- or human-muscle power instead of motors, but they got the work done!

Growing up in the Philippines, I’ve always wondered why they drew the horses in Beauty and the Beast with so much muscles, compared to our local horses here that are skinnier and smaller. I lately realized that they really are horses that are thick and heavy abroad.

The infant mortality rate was higher so it brought the "average life expectancy" down. People in this time and beyond routinely lived to ripe old ages. It was just harder for poor people to provide proper nutrition for a small child, who hasn't developed an immune system yet.

@@jimdandy8119 Yes, you are right, but the living and working conditions of the working class in the 19th century, the century of the rise of capitalism, were harsh. Also lowering the life expectancy of the dominated class. The time was full of dangers, we must not romanticize “La Belle Époque” as we call it here in France. Diseases, unsanitary conditions, no drinking water, hard work, low wages, pollution, malnutrition, war, police repression by the ruling class, no social security or retirement for the elderly and disabled who have to work until they die or beg 🥲

Some of that's due to the AI remastering, but yeah everything I've read has said the air was pretty rank back then. Wood and coal for heating, factory waste dumped into lakes and rivers, and so on. E.g. read about the 1856 "Great Stink" in London. 😷😷💩

So much pain at that time. No good health care, food etc… Around that time we lost a lot of people for famine in Finland (a bit earlier). You can romantize and dream, but good to know that it is only dream. You can be truly thankful for modern life, when you understand how many better things we have.
