Want to avoid looking like a tourist in Europe for your upcoming trip? Here's what not to wear in Paris this year in 2019.
If you’re looking for some ideas for Paris outfits for summer and fall then this video is for you. If you want to look Parisian chic then learn what specific French style rules you want to avoid breaking and what items NOT to wear.
If you’re American and have not traveled to Paris or Europe much and want to avoid looking like a tourist, then this video is for you.
I’m going to be breaking this down by category beginning with overall style philosophy, tops, bottoms, outerwear, footwear, accessories, and beauty.
But I’m assuming you always want to look chic and feel you’re most confident.
The good news is, I think you’ll appreciate these French style tips and feel more confident and comfortable when you visit.
Good style is being able to follow rules while also knowing how to break them.
As mentioned in the video, I have that new free resource for you that will give my exact packing list for Paris for 10 days.

Trainers like converse & adidas are actually very common in the streets of Paris. There is no rule against wearing them because it’s a practical shoe when you are walking as much as they do. Women wear them with just about anything. The woven bag in the background that you plan on taking is very busy. They are usually one solid color. The smaller cross-bag looks pretty ideal to carry. I’ll have to catch up on your recent videos to see what type of footage you were able to capture of the locals.

No Yoga pants, crop tops, leggings, skimpy shorts, sweatpants, heavy makeup...specially those red or blue barrettes i see tourists wearing around any areas of the Eiffel Tower. And don’t forget to say Bonjour or Bonsoir when entering any establishment, specially if you do not speak French as you will be ignored.

Basically, you are going to a very urban and walkable environment, so you need to kick it up a notch, layer, and wear nice shoes you can walk in. A crossbody bag for security, and know key French phrases and manners.

Good style advice for those who are looking to blend in, and I love the shoe brand advice! However, I would like to see more personal expression and less beige trenchcoats, navy blazers (though I am wearing one in my profile picture...) and two-toned flats. I've been to Paris 6 or 7 times, and was supposed to go again this month.

Do not wear heals and any shoe that will cause blisters. I went to Paris last July when France won the World Cup!! I wore cute leather mule flats and after hours of walking , I noticed the top of my foot was bloody!!! If this happens, go to the nearest Pharmacie. They were very helpful and had lots of blister covers. The big square ones did the trick. Wearing trainers or tennis shoes are the shoes of choice!! It seemed like women were much more casual with the footwear in Paris . We did London a few years ago and Ladies were dressed up more. with dressy flats and low heeled shoes.

I've been plugged in to a couple of your "how to dress in Paris" videos. The wardrobe I've chosen is from suggestions on the internet about Parisian dressing and how not to look too touristy. I don't care much about looking touristy, but I'd rather blend in. I just watched another person's video on Parisian dressing, and it's totally the opposite of what I've seen on your vids and on the internet in general. There were French women dressed in high-end designer pieces like Gucci and Hermes. The jewelry was very bold and bulky and costume and high end (like a rainbow Rolex). I'd prefer to be more minimal and not stand out with baubles and bangles, so I believe you're correct. I've chosen black ballet flats, nautical stripes, plain white button-downs, plain T shirts. Elegant but not ostentatious. The only thing I just did was purchase 2 sisal basket bags online, and then noticed that the genuine French women called them "cliche". I'm a Californian, so anything actually goes where I live. I would prefer to wear the sisal basket bags (even in the fall, when I'm going to France) because carrying a backpack really makes an American girl stand out like a sore thumb. I think your packiing tips and clothing choices (clothing capsule) are spot on with my internet research. I'm also glad I bought a plain blazer to dress up plain straight black pants.

Hey there! I’m so glad that you found this video helpful. I actually just recorded another video this week that I’ll be publishing later today! It’s an updated version of what to wear in Paris. It sounds like you’re on the right track! All the pieces that you picked out are beautiful. One thing I will note is that I did see women in Paris wearing sisal bags but they were 100% natural with no coloring whatsoever. And many of them were quite on the small side. I definitely agree with you that a backpack would be out of sorts. But I would even recommend carrying one or two bags with you. A lot of people in Paris are currently wearing fun smaller bags that are more unique or tote bags and then their regular purse.

What I love most about Paris street wear? No athlesure. Oh my -I am so tired of our American athlesure trend-love the elegance and mystery of Parisian street style. I don’t need to know you exercise-show me in your healthy glow and how you hold the lines of your elegant pieces. Right? I think this is why some of us in America are so in love with Paris Street fashion because our street fashion consists of spandex rear ends!

I would say that these rules don’t just apply to Paris… but are about how not to stand out like an American absolutely anywhere in the world. I live in the Highlands of Scotland and we can always spot an American tourist at 100 paces. Can I add one more item to the list of “don’ts “? Don’t speak louder than is necessary in order to be heard … overly loud voices is the other sure sign that Americans are around and it can be really quite painful to endure if it goes on for a long time, in a setting like a restaurant for instance.

ingrid- I agree! It seems that the time to make these videos would be *after* going to Paris, at least once. Study and preparation is one thing, but experience adds so much! There are always surprises when we actually *do* something. Why take advice from someone inexperienced? Would we take childbirth classes from someone who hasn’t given birth themselves? Driving lessons from someone who’s never been behind the wheel? DO first, THEN teach!
