We’ve arrived in the stunning Swiss town of Geneva but cannot find a park up using our usual apps. We resort to school girl French and an app that we believe 98% of Vanlifers have access to, but wouldn’t automatically consider using for this purpose!
After a peaceful night in a lovely scenic aire, we head to CERN for a day of mind blowing physics and history.
From Geneva we head in to France to a small French town and stumble onto a wonderful Sunday morning market.
When searching for an aire in France using google maps, search for the term “aire de camping car”.
Checkout CERN and definitely visit it if you get a chance, it’s amazing and is completely free visit.cern/

Just to add, that I work managing a large global fleet. We along with most other fleets I know, have suspended all new vehicle orders with Ford as a result of this issue. And in particular the poor way Ford have responded. Basically the wet belt system was put in to reduce emissions, improve fuel consumption and reduce noise. Sadly Ford failed to do sufficient longevity tests. A wet belt replacement cost is about £1,200 and now recommended by Ford every 80k miles, but some fleets running them until the leases end are doing this every 50k miles. As its £1,200 replacement cost vs £7,500 new engine. The spreadsheet models we use to budget for something called “Total Cost of Ownership” mean that the Mercedes Sprinters are lower cost to run (despite slightly worse fuel consumption) and after that the residual value is far better. As the knowledge of this issue is now common, Residual Value of Ford Transits has taken a big drop. After all who’s going to want a used Ford Transit Motorhome, if they face a £1,200 bill to prevent an engine failure.

We’ve on the road heading back from the Just Go pick up point (at Lake Garda) and your right the Ford Transit doesn’t have drive well. It’s noticeably more powerful than the 2020 fiat 140. It just cruises at 70mph. We pick up our new Adria when we get back with the 9speed auto 140 Ducato. Just hope it performs as well (or nearly as well) as the Ford 170.

So many exciting points in your comment! Thank you so much for sharing. Doesn’t it drive well, I was so impressed with it I had to share. I thought it was 160bhp, if it’s 170bhp that makes even more sense with the power of it. One thing I do prefer though is our seats on our Fiat based Kon-tiki, they felt bigger and more comfortable. Enjoy your Adria, they’re great motorhomes.

The issue with the Wet Cambelt problem that have happened with the Ecoboost engines. It’s the way Ford have “ducked and dived” about owning up to the issue and leaving owners to pick up the cost of their mistake. As such I wouldn’t own one. And if you don’t think you will need to change the belt whilst you own it, you maybe surprised that there are reports of belts braking at 50k miles! The Ford answer to this is for customers to pay to have them changed even earlier. When launched the replacement schedule was 150k miles. Customers have had belts brake at much lower mileages, and the result is almost certainly a new engine will be required, and the van off the road for months! If you are on a vacation when it happens it’s vacation over and a recovery back home. “Buyer be ware”

Absolutely, I have heard of the problems from many, which is why I thought it a valid point I should bring up, whilst praising how well these vans drive. That said, I’d still consider buying one as I’ve never done 50k miles in a motorhome and have no doubt I’d sell it well before the belt would need changing.

@@RoamingRadfords So the potential issue with that, is that when you come to sell your low mileage Ford Transit, the next potential buyer is going to consider whether they are likely to run into the issue. And the other problem is Ford don’t offer any advice on what happens to the wet belt when the van is left dormant for extended periods of time. I suspect that as the oil drains down when you stop the engine, the top of the belt is going to become very dry over a few weeks. Personally I don’t like having an engine which has not been sufficiently tested by the manufacturer. It seems they either launched the engine with fingers crossed, or knew there was going to be an issue and filed it away knowing they would get the issue later. My advice from someone who runs 1,000’s of these - Get a Mercedes if you value how the vehicle behaves/drives. Everything else, especially VW/MAN will cause more reliability issues, and the Fiat/Peugeot/Citroen/Vauxhall bases are ok but don’t drive as well.

The ford chassis is great the smaller diesel engine is pretty bulletproof the larger one does have some wet timing belt issues, there are millions of these chassis around, Im in Vietnam and they are everywhere by the millions much like the sprinter chassis are in south america

It's a shame they'd sold out of the chickens because they were poulet de Bresse ( noticed it on the sign and thought they're going to love that) and are renowned to be the best chickens in France. Just before Christmas they have a competition to see which farmer has the best poulet de Bresse and then they get sold at astronomical prices in butchers and markets all over France. I was lucky to try one once and it was delicious but probably not worth the price in my opinion. They're wrapped in cheesecloth with the appropriate medal or not round their necks. Totally different chicken than what you'd buy in a supermarket. I don't know much about physics but I know my French chickens 😅😂😅
