About the speaker:-
Dr. Laurie Mischley is a naturopathic physician and researcher specialising in the treatment and management of Parkinson's disease (PD). With over 20 years of experience in the field, she has become a leading expert in the use of natural therapies for PD.
Dr. Mischley studied naturopathic medicine (ND) at Bastyr University and epidemiology (MPH) and nutritional sciences (PhD) at the University of Washington. Her work is focused on identifying the nutritional requirements unique to individuals with PD. She has published on coenzyme Q10, lithium, glutathione and mitochondrial deficiency in PD. She is Principal Investigator of the Modifiable Variables in Parkinsonism Study (mvp-study.com), which is attempting to describe why some people with PD progress slower than others.
Dr. Mischley is working on ways to study, package and deliver evidence-based lifestyle modification as a therapeutic strategy. I was diagnosed with PD about three years ago with tremors as my initial symptom. I have read every paper and examined all the other anecdotal and scientific material I could find. Armed with this information I conducted a series of strategies designed to mitigate the symptoms and slow the progression of PD in *my* case. The result is that my tremors remain largely unchanged but my quality of life has increased dramatically. I exercise regularly, walking and resistance training. This has paid significant dividends in my stamina and also my general robustness. Of all the various supplements I've tried, creatine monohydrate has had the most noticeable benefits, further contributing to my stamina and also (subjectively) improving my clarity of thought. Reducing my intake of carbohydrates (albeit I'm not on a keto diet) has had a small but measurable positive effect as well. One thing I decided not to do was to start taking levadopa too soon. Although I do take it when I absolutely need to be able to use my hands tremor-free, that's usually no more than once or twice a month. As a result, I'm not on the wagon of having to regularly hike the dose. I have developed a mountain of "coping strategies" to deal with the tremors, the falls, the distonia and the sleep disturbances -- to the point that I am now happier, fitter, stronger and feel healthier than I was five years ago. Nothing will stop the progression of my PD but it feels empowering to be able to put up the strongest fight I can and so far I'm doing very well.

How about macuna as a source of levodopa? So much going for it - seems a gentler way than meds with fewer side effects.

i applaud your approach and strategies. The only thing I'd add from a pro-levodopa perspective is that I only take it prior to exercise and it helps me lift more weights and to run/cycle harder and further. I'm hoping it helps increase the exercise-related benefits that everyone talks so much about.

Kudos for taking responsibility for your continued health and well-being and not just a pawn of the medical industry 👏🏻 👍🏻 In a previous video they spoke about the benefits of increasing fiber consumption thru vegetarian staples. Surprisingly good results in reduced symptoms and slower progression of the disease. So, NEVER SAY NEVER! Perhaps vegetables can be as the limes are to scurvy?!

@@calista1280 Interestingly enough, my diet consists of a lot of protein in the form of meats, yoghurt and cheese. I also take creatine monohydrate as a supplement. It is a key component of the energy chain that powers all our cells (including our brain) and it certainly seems to have improved my clarity of thinking and physical endurance. The bottom line is perhaps that everyone is different so perhaps the best advice is to try everything and use whatever works for you.

The solution is so simple. I'm on carnivore (dr Berry on youtube ) a year and B1 (under tongue on Amazon 7$, Elliott Overton on KZfaq) and no more walker and yesterday did 5 thrift stores in the aft! Impossible 6 years ago. I can think straight again and follow a movie. I'm 78 and aging in reverse. My Parkinson's has halted and reversed. I still have slight morning tremor and take one Levaddopa in the morning and that is ALL. I'm not exercising but need to get back to walking. Neurologist discharged me as doing fine.

ThxU I’m been trying navigate myself since 2016 I’m 55yrs indigenous female struggling no support between my neurologist and GP I’m just a number and still trying to do my best to get through the Pain, Falls, Insomnia, Dyskinesia, Constipation, Stiffness, Confusion in everyday tasks, Involuntary movements, Diet very poor because of being displaced You given me the encouragement to not give up that watching your videos and others on Parkinson Disease is my only hope to get through another day and remain positive!! Of all the videos you have done I found this one probably the most interesting, watched it 3 times. I am 74, Diagnosed 6 yrs ago and Med free so far, tremor dominant. For some reason from the beginning I went on a Keto diet, dropped 30Lbs which I needed to do aanyway. The point of writing is to say I have been experimenting with food and this vid has given me the encouragement to do more of it. I also have been on 1000MG of B1 per day from the start.. I find Dr M very easy to listen to and will follow her closely.Please interview her again in the not to distant future.

Look up Alex Kerten, Goodbye Parkinson's Hello Life. When he was in Israel I took my older friend to him every month for a year.. She slowly reduced her medications by half! He teaches so many things! He has now relocated his practice to Portugal, but is available by Zoom. Get help like him and also, there's Howard Shifke and his book.

Excellent! I was diagnosed 1 year ago at age 56. I have been very suspicious that the healthcare system treating this disease is very fragmented and seems to mentally prepare you for the worst. I am now learning and experiencing that I have options that dramatically improve my symptoms. I will be signing up for any studies you have. Thank you!!

Excellent discussion. I think you conflated the Rivastigmine patch (Exelon, acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, used for dementia) with Rotigotine patch (Neupro, a dopamine receptor agonist for PD or RLS). Also, I check homocysteine (a waste product of levodopa metabolism) in PD patients - it goes up before the B-12 level drops. I take opicapone (Ongentys 50 mg QD) in the morning, not at bedtime, to reduce hypnopompic hallucinations, with much improvement. Keep up the great work! David L. Keller, MD (disabled)

No more wheel chair use for down town travels. Spent seven months in and out of hospitals for paralysis of my legs. Started Parkinson’s leading medication how ever did not improve my very slow walking. Started Vit B1 100mg twice morning with magneisium 250mg in morning. With two days I went for a three walk none stop, where as only two days be I could bare move one foot in front of the other. The base spine nerve pain is now gone. The nerve pain was a constant remainder that I could drop to the ground at any moment. Try it as it will change your life. Thank you.

My sister has been totally vegan for 40 years. No meat, no dairy. . She power walks an hour a day. She also takes appropriate supplements like B12. She was just diagnosed with Dementia with Lewys Bodies which is related to Parkinson’s. And she is going down fast. This is analogous to the sailor who ate a dozen limes a day but got scurvy anyway.

Wow. 29:45 Frozen vegetables are bad, but fresh vegetables are good. Plastic bottles are bad. Dairy is bad. Loneliness is as bad for you as seven days of exercise is good for you.

I looked at the assortment of variables with great interest. It seems to me that there is some--not entirely--confusion between correlation and causation. Let us say, for example, that I said men who shaved every day don't get Parkinson's. But men who don't shave do. Well, it seems likely that the men who shave everry day do so in part because they don't have major problems with hand tremors. But the Parkinson's patients with bad hand tremor would maybe wear a beard or shave less often. It has nothing to do with the mechanism of Parkinson's. I don't want to go through all the variables one by one, but it it does seem to me that Dr. Mischeley's emphasis on a social life as diminishing Parkinson's is one such confusion between correlation and causation. If I have bad Parkinson's, my friends might invite me over less (due to the problems of getting me in and out of the house) and frankly they may be uncomfortable with the reminder of mortality. This is unfortunate because some people will feel bad (I should have had more friends) and feel like their disease progression is their fault. Other variables may be interactive--for example, Mischeley et al find no particular effect with sugar, but that could be in the methodology. Half the people "below the line in the good zone" are exercising and therefore better metabolizing sugar (it's well known walking is good for diabetics). The non-exercising group may indeed be taking a hit to their health from sugar. So this kind of data needs to be used with care, I'm not sure everyone who looks at will take the time to sort it out.

Some people take a lot of B1. I take 100 mg I started with 100 mg every day now I do 100 mg maybe every two or three days find if I’m taking too much my symptoms are worse and that’s how I know not to do so much, if you follow Daphne and Elliott, you will hear her say words to that effect that that’s how she monitors by how she feels. She had a Facebook account that covered so many of these issues with B1 I would recommend anybody taking B1 to join and get more education, if you’re just doing B1

Dairy blocks the absorption of antioxidants, and that is going to be irrespective of whether it's organic or inorganic...

I believe she meant to say gm of protein, instead of mg, for calculating gm/kg of body weight nutritional requirements. Generally it’s .8-1 gm/kg body weight per clinical standards (I’m a retired RD, Registered Dietitian).

Exactly! I am a lifelong bodybuilder and always ate high amounts of protein (compared to most people), but I question her 1 mg per kg of bodyweight recommendation.

Another fantastic video and one I have been waiting to hear. It has given me hope. I already do lots of exercise and have been a life long vegetarian, 40 years, no milk, cream or yoghurt. I’d be vegan excepting my love of cheese (not every day though). Couple of points for Laurie: 1. Poultry: I have a hunch there maybe a huge difference between organic free range and factory farmed. 2. US dominant: Your studies are US dominant where many more pesticides are used in arable farming. I think this may have put frozen veg into your bad category. I don’t eat masses of frozen veg but it does mean I can eat berries without them being irradiated and flown half way around the world. 3. Frozen veg vs no veg: Fresh veg is so expensive now it is out of the reach of a lot of people. Is frozen the next best thing? 4. Processed food: I assume meat substitutes are not great because of the number of additives. For this reason I prefer tofu rather than quorn 5. B12, magnesium and tinnitus. Taken both for ever. B12 from being a veggie/vegan. Magnesium because it always improved my energy levels. Never knew about the link between these and tinnitus and Parkinson’s , so thanks. Is there a nutritionist in the UK you could recommend to check my various levels. I’m based near Oxford. Thanks again for a well researched and informed video.

I’m watching this video for a couple of friends and family members who have Parkinson’s and also I figured it might help my health too. When she got to the part about dairy, I questioned it because my grandmother lived to 103 and she ate ice cream every single evening, drank milk and ate cheese a lot and so it’s just makes me question that. She didn’t even have diabetes. Her memory was fantastic. Maybe because half her life the dairy products aren’t getting as many pesticides on antibiotics and all that crap? She also home birthed 17 children. She was amazing.

I watched this and also have serious reservations on the dairy gluten thing which is clearly a nutritional fad. Many people are eating dairy/gluten free.who are not sensitive to either but feel more healthy that way. Some of this reaction is a mind thing and the fact that people clearly lose weight this way. I think that mankind has been eating some form of dairy and grains (mostly wheat) for over a 1000 years. We don't know much about the health and longevity of all these civilizations or cultures except perhaps medieval Europe. Considering all the other health risks we can't say they died young because they were consuming gluten and dairy. I think you're on the right track about your grandmothers diet not being tainted by arterial additives or modern chemical residue. This is probably a giant factor. Just consider eating a hot dog in its practically non perishable bun! Or the way animals are raised and slaughtered. That said, its always a good idea to eat more fruit and vegetables, hopefully grown with a minimum of chemicals.I was also surprised about the lack of concern about sugar the huge consumption of which is a modern phenomenon. My mother who was trained as a dietician back in the dark ages always said the important thing is to eat a little bit of everything and try to make it fresh.

Actually, Jacques Cartier's frozen ship incident happened in 1536. The crew's scurvy was cured with indigenous spruce tea. Unfortunately this cure came too late for most of the crew. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Cartier

What about sarapeptase as a supplement. I didn’t see this on your list. Its thought to redistribute the protein in appropriate areas of the body.

Look to the foremost researcher on photobiomodulation and his neurodegeneration work. Dr. Michael Hamblin. I used it to remedy my peripheral neuropothy 100% in ,< 2 months. My sister was diagnosed with cortical basal degeneration getting help from a red / near infrared hat I got her. Mitochondrial health at the root of most/all major long-term disease. When they are unhealthy for many various reasons, inflamation occurs, cell deteriation ocurs, and the superstructures made of those cell function less. Improve the mitochondria function/ energy [atp] production and many benefits abound!!

Good information, but I take issue with her protein intake recommendations: 1 mg per kilogram of body weight.??? Thst is ridiculously low and essentially inconsequential...near zero.

Would you give any comments about the fact that they it is extremely common that the Carbidopa/levodopa extremely harsh on the stomach and makes you throw up. You get nauseous moments after in some but there are plenty of alternatives out there that will not do that for you. And if you don't study the alternatives you are going to be only reliant on that one pill that makes you sick every single time you take it.. Doctors seemed to be listen I'm trying other non nauseating meds. What is up with that?

Watch out for 'tons of B6' as the most common form of it can cause neuropathy (I think that's what's happened to me after a long time on Solgar B-100)

I have doubts about taking Carbidopa/Levodopa (sinemet). After 3 Months- 3 per day, should I be feeling something besides some lightheadedness and occasional trouble sleeping? There are no changes to my symptoms. After experimenting with dose scheduling, there are still no changes to my symptoms with or without the medication. Is there any benefit to me to continue on sinemet?

The solution is so simple. I'm on carnivore (dr Berry on youtube ) a year and B1 (under tongue on Amazon 7$, Elliott Overton on KZfaq) and no more walker and yesterday did 5 thrift stores in the aft! Impossible 6 years ago. I can think straight again and follow a movie. I'm 78 and aging in reverse. My Parkinson's has halted and reversed. I still have slight morning tremor and take one Levaddopa in the morning and that is ALL. I'm not exercising but need to get back to walking. Neurologist discharged me as doing fine.

The idea that an egg in the morning can ruin meds for the entire day is new to me. So far, the most conservative advice I've come across is to wait 2 hours after consuming protein before taking levodopa. (Of course, this timeframe would have to work with the individual's medication needs overall.)

Macuna is macuna pruriens, aka velvet bean, which is a natural source of levodopa. People often say it gives fewer 'off' periods compared to pharma levodopa. Supplements vary in strength as velvet beans vary in strength (and even from batch to batch). I read good reviews by someone on the PD forum at Health Unlocked who was using the Piping Rock macuna which is standardised at 15%. British Supplements at the other end of the scale have a 99% version. For her lists, you could screenshot and then print from there.

I take a low dose of macuna by british supplements and this helps and i drink saffron water throughout the day (approx a pinch soaked in hot water) as required and this helps immensely@@lovesarita

Why not do a 30 to 90 day study of volunteers who follow a strict low carb high fat diet. Maybe ketogenesis is a good strategy.

@@paulaelliott47. My husband started keto for PD. He never falls. He fell six times the next day. I had to get help getting him up. It was horrible. That was the end of KETO for us.

My goodness, a doctor who advises taking a Calcium supplement? That's something expected from a third grader. Maybe she slept during nutrition class. Calcium supplements are an absolute no.

@@paulaelliott47 this is awesome!!! I have been carnivore for almost 5 years. I have been living with my parents for the past two. Mum has Parkinson , but it doesn’t matter how much I share and encourage her, she refuses to give up her carb addiction and just thinks she has to be frail and week and digress. She is borderline diabetic plus other things. It pains me she just accepts her diagnoses, takes the pills and won’t do anything for herself to change that around.
