My son was a wild land firefighter for several years. There are only so many firefighters for thousands upon thousands of acres of land that is burning. The crews are few and far between. Part of that reason is they work 24 hour sifts some times, and they have to sleep some time. They can't be on the fire all the time. My son finally quit because in the fall everyone gets laid off and you can't survive on unemployment checks. He tried going up the ladder for a better job but those jobs only come up when someone retires. So we are very lucky to have those firefighters that continue to fight the fires. They are all hero's and they deserve more than they get.

Yikes! I hate driving through burnt-out forest, but I can't imagine doing so while patches of it are still actively on fire and the car has been on empty for miles. 😮 You two seemed remarkably calm about it all, but sensible, capable men probably don't freak out all that often. Ryan has a lovely, soothing voice that could ward off most panic attacks. When I drove from NB to my new home in AB, I had to pass through a lot of burned areas in northern ON, and gas stations were few and frequently closed there too. My anxiety was maxed out the whole way across that never-ending province. Having survived that long solo drive, I would love to do it again someday when I have the time to enjoy the countryside more.

This totally reminded me of in 2003 I was driving around Tasmania in an old beat up 80's toyota I think it was, in the middle of nowhere running out of petrol. I wasn't going to make it to the next town, somehow I found out about this 1 little petrol pump off the beaten track, I made it there and found a sign saying cash only and they would be back soon - I think they had gone to put a bush fire out or something. Somebody did turn up eventually but I only had $10 on me.. luckily it bought me enough petrol to get me to the next town! Things like this are what turn trips into adventures :)

Then you say to watch the white line....I watched so intensely and suddenly yell it's a moose, NO, it's a BEAR, LOOK OUT!! My husband comes running in to see what the heck is wrong with me. Your adventures remind me of when we were first married in the seventies. We had an Austin A 40. It had a gear cable that needed replacing. We were moving from south island New Zealand to north island with year old daughter. Could only get first and second gear or third and fourth gear at a time. What an adventure . Mostly in 3/4 gear but stopping near top of hills to change up gears. Old car, those days had to get part from wreckers.

I'm much more afraid of moose than wolves. Especially during mating season. I don't even remember hearing about a wolf attack, other than old fairy tales. In Prince George one time I came around a corner of a 2 lane road around midnight and there was the biggest bull moose I've ever seen, standing on the road with 2 females. I was in a little GMC Sonoma pickup and I swear to God I could have driven underneath him and the only thing that would have touched him was the antenna! The road was too icy & narrow to back up or turn around. All I could do was honk the horn, yell, & bang my hand on the outside of my door. After about 10 minutes of this he got bored and walked off. He wasn't the least bit afraid of me. I on the other hand, nearly needed to change my pants when I got home! Lmao
@ParklandFilms
@ParklandFilms 4 жыл бұрын
Ha ha right on, yes, moose definitely are scared of nothing. Great story you shared! I once was riding my snowmobile and came upon a moose standing right in the middle of the trail. I stopped and we just stared at each other. I would rev my engine which was probably quite loud to him, but he really didn't care. Like you, I had to wait a while until he left.

Another thought, :-) from someone who feels she's been alone and gone through the gas experiences night and day and also been thankful for the Miracles that have happened during those experiences haha but serious! All that traffic passing you by, many of them may have full tanks. And rather than worry and talk about it in a negative sense just know that you can pull over get out wave your arms frantically, even if you're not frantic. You can jump around like a madman with your arms waving and be smiling at the same time! :-) someone will more than likely pull over and if you have a hose and don't mind a little gas in your nose, siphon a little bit from someone into your can or ride into your car. Being careful of course. But there are so many wonderful people in this human race. And I have been reminded of it right when I'm on the edge of losing hope. I'm in a situation now with being evicted and yet these Little Miracles keep me going day by day so that I can focus on being free of it all! Yay! Anywho, just sharing my thoughts thank you

You guys are so great in the memory of Chris.:-) God bless you! I just wished I could reach into the video and put masks on you! Not scary Halloween masks but life saving filtering masks! I've been in that situation up in Oregon and I was thankful for air conditioning because it was also so hot. But I was able to stay close to the coast. With my dog spot. And as we traveled south from Brookings Oregon at the California border it got less and less. But I had windows up but still my eyes were burning and I could feel it in my lungs. My German Shepherd spot was sound asleep in the backseat and thankfully it didn't affect him as a senior dog:-). One day I will go to Chris's bus. I feel there's a lot of spirit energy that is nothing but positive and beautiful. God bless Chris God bless his family God bless you and your families and God bless the world. Much love, l o r r i r o s s

Absolutely love this series and this episode with the fires was stressful to watch, let alone actually being there! I have to ask one question though, why on earth didn't you put the fuel from your can into the car before you were guided through the fires, to ensure you didn't run out in the middle of the smoke and flames?
@ParklandFilms
@ParklandFilms 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Carol! To be honest, not sure why we didn't put the fuel in earlier. There was a lot to process at that time, we were just rolling with it. Also, we did not know the fire would be that close to the road, he just said the smoke was real bad.

It's almost like a rerun. You guys had the gas issue on the way there but I don't remember if you actually run out. All I could think of is the fire could spread to you if the car ran out of gas you wouldn't have any where or way to escape the fire. I will be waiting to find out if you did run out again. I hope not.
@ParklandFilms
@ParklandFilms 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you would think after Dawson City we would be more careful about fuel. However, when we left Fairbanks we still had more than a half talk of gas and it was only about 9pm so we figured it would be no problem to drive an hour or so till the smoke cleared and fill up with gas. Well, they all closed between 9 and 10pm so we were pretty hooped and had no choice but to keep driving!!

If it was a wolf and hungry you would be in pieces. Just sayin' LOL ;) Those cars have a incredible big trunk which you cannot find in any car today.

Yes that trunk was huge and a good thing as we had so much stuff. If there was a next time, it could be packed a bit lighter. Pretty sure that was a wolf, they are pretty timid on their own, vicious in a pack. I've been closer than that to a wolf, the smoke was so thick it was probably pretty dazed, tired and lost.
