One of my favorite examples is one of the most important poets in ancient China called 白居易 would insist on having uneducated or even illiterate commoners to listen to him read his poems, and help him reflect on how his poems could be more accessible to the common masses, without throwing all techniques out of the window. I just find it so obnoxious of gabbie to be insisting that Rachel has no right to criticize her work, even though almost anyone of any educational background should have the right to criticize it. (And ffs Rachel is literally educated deeply in literature, and she also has so many amazing works) the audacity of miss gabbie😶

I read a book about the Iowa Writer’s Workshop once which opened with a description of how indigenous poets on a tiny island - Kiribati, I think? - have had a practice similar to workshopping for a long, long time: when someone feels the need to write a poem, he’d go off and sit alone to compose the poem in his head. Once a sort of “draft” was thought up, he’d get together several trusted poet friends and recite to them; they’d cheer when they liked something and rip the speaker a new one when they did not. Then the poet would go away alone again overnight to take the criticism deemed useful, discard that which was not, and make any other improvements before going back to the village, where the final version would be incorporated into the verbal culture. All this to say that while a university education and/or wide reading are useful for poets, you could still become quite talented without them, or even without paper and pen - if you have the mental toughness to actively seek out audiences that can and will be brutally honest (I think the book put it as something like “caring more about the work coming into being than about the author’s feelings”), and then the perspective and good grace to *listen to them*. You may not accept every suggestion, but do think about them seriously before you do so. (For whatever it’s worth, I do actually have some professional credentials to back up that last statement - I write test questions. Three reviewers read and comment on each one, then it is sent back to me. I am allowed to reject a suggestion, but I am expected to add a note explaining why. Then the boss reads all these notes and either accepts my reasoning or kicks it back to me. Sometimes the boss agrees with my reasoning, sometimes the boss agrees with the reviewer, sometimes the boss agrees with neither of us and will send it back to me with their own feedback. That varies, but what doesn’t vary is that it really is nothing personal - the reputation of the business is tied up in producing the best-quality product possible, so if we want to keep getting paid, we’d best engage with the process and keep our minds on the product. Does it sting sometimes, even with something as impersonal as a test question? Yes, but that’s my problem, not the publisher’s, so I take a walk and get a grip and then act like a professional.)

As someone who studies literature and creative writing in university, I can almost guarantee you that Gabbie Hanna has never set foot in a writing workshop, especially one in an educational setting. To be frank, her work would be ripped to shreds by serious writers and poets. It is laughable garbage that she pushed out to make a quick buck off of the populaar Rupi Kaur aesthetic (which I'm also not a fan of but at least Kaur put a bit more effort and soul into her poetry than GH did). Any good writer or poet knows that criticism is a part of learning and is absolutely vital to improving. The fact that she went nuclear on Rachel for what was REALLY GOOD AND FAIR (albeit blunt) criticism just highlights how narcissistic and delusional GH is. She is the type of girl that I've met in my writing classes who spends an hour writing a poem, and she expects everyone to praise her for it, even though others have put far more time and care into their work. Good art production always involves criticism and revision. GH is not a mature or talented artist--I hesitate to even call her one at all--and she will never become one because she does not understand how constructive criticism works in the field of art production.

Yeah, the way she handles even PERCEIVED rejection makes it clear she never had to do those class critiques with everyone tearing your piece apart. She’s very obviously one of those Art People who thinks anything they do is Art because they’re an Artist. (She’s even referred to her recent drama series as an artistic work.)

@@SpyderT22 basically it’s a Bachelor of Arts in law, or a degree in legal philosophy and theory, but I am not a lawyer. I can work at a law firm as a researcher or legal aid, but can’t go to court or anything, you have to do postgrad or that. A lot of people go from undergrad into tax law or legal research, I’m heading into teaching. I start my masters of teaching in November.

Same! I don't care for poetry much. But hearing the breakdown, the comparisons, the whole art of it you can appreciate the art form. Rachel's videos made me want to try out poetry again, I still kinda don't get it, but I can appreciate why people like it.

I was initially on the same side. I can't stand Gabbie, but as someone who had never heard of Rachel,(or what she does) it did sound kind of cruel. Once you look into the actual content and the full context you see a very different picture. Gabbie is smart and incredibly manipulative, she knew by saying it was mocking an abused child those of us who had experienced CSA or something similar would immediately be triggered. I'll admit that's what happened with me, and what my original opinion was based off of, my own trauma. I'm not proud of believing her on this one thing even for the few day that I did. But I really hope others look into it as well and realize that they're being manipulated. Gabbie needs help, although I doubt she's willing to put the work in to truly change. It's not easy looking at yourself, realizing faults, and then making changes. Especially when you're used to getting your own way.

From the content of her that I have seen it seems she does not believe in theory behind poetry, she sees it just as "I express my feelings the way I want and art has no rules". While technically true she somehow doesn't understand that it does not mean her poetry is good or that given the fact that the book is pretty expensive - it can be reviewed as any other poetry and be held to the same standards.

I understand that but like Rachel said, hers was a lot more constructive in the way that gabbie said she wanted, and the way that james Marriott talked about Rachel and her videos was very misleading and kind of rude and was even kind of attacking her, was very uncalled for. gabbie attacking her criticism in comparison is just baffling. iNabber misrepresented Rachel, even to a lesser extent, and he held himself accountable in his next video, and kept up the original video with a statement in the comments apologizing. So even if James’ original critiques were not very constructive but still valid, he did spread misinformation about Rachel and her criticisms and had a bad response to that. even though I no longer find that kind of criticism entertaining, and I would understand why the creator may not enjoy hearing that form of criticism, there’s still room for it to exist. I didn’t want to support someone who didn’t seem genuine when they were held accountable for their misrepresentation of Rachel and her work. He wasn’t really criticizing Rachel’s videos I don’t think, correct me if I’m wrong because it’s been awhile since I saw the video but I think he was sort of defending gabbie in that video. So in the end I was just frustrated and disappointed in him and unsubbed 🤷‍♀️ hope that makes sense.
