Well, that's Peter the parrot! I think he could be super cool if I learned a little bit of ventriloquism and had more practice with working the illusion, but he's pretty cool as is now, I think. Anyway, he's why I've been so busy recently. Let me know if you'd like to see more random project videos every now and then, or if you're just here for the banjo! I've got a lot of random projects I could show off, but I'm also happy to just stick to music stuff here.

Phoebe I think Peter parrot is great and it's really very kind of you to share him with children. Puppetry is an art form with a long ancient history and has been used to tell stories, inform people, teach morals, and make people laugh. I hope you stick with him but not to the detriment of your music. Thanks for showing Peter to us and hope you have a great weekend but of course I will check in for fretless Friday.

This is so fun and cool! He has a lot of personality. The big thing breaking the illusion is the occasional adjustment with the other hand. A stitch of thread between the base of the thumb and back side of the parrot tummy might help keep it lifted. Otherwise, misdirection is your biggest friend. Keeping the bird moving and making "eye contact" is important, which you seem to be a natural at. Overall, fantastic job! I can already see your children's show in my head, with all your puppets and crafts and banjo playing. I would definitely sit my kids down in front of it if I had any.

Don't be worried that people know it's a fake hand, it's just how people naturally think of how the parrot puppet talks, it really doesn't look like a fake hand and it is pretty convincing looking. You would definitely fool my niece at least until you explained it to her. Kids are naive and will believe anything, just like how I fooled my niece about a invisible lock on a door, even though she could see my hands through the window, and watched me latch a invisible latch, she couldn't guess that I kept the door shut with my foot even though I stepped away from the door after closing it. Even when her mom said I used my foot, and she asked me about it, I asked her "how would she know, she wasn't there to see it?" Then she whined about how I did it, and I finally admitted I just used my foot, just like how her mom said the first time. Great parrot puppet. Looks like a ton of fun for the kids, and yourself.

What a great idea! Nice puppet, Peter's full of character... he looks kind of hard to please :) A good little trick for puppeteering - look at the puppet when it's talking, and vice versa. That's terrific Phoebe. I was at a graduate model makers show last week. One student made a dragon puppet from How To Train Your Dragon. They cast a fake version of their hand in latex and it was really convincing. The whole puppet was made of latex, so very flexible. But your felt puppet with a latex hand would work. The glove is also cool. Well done!

She would dress in character and just had a great time. The kids all grew up enjoying her and by association Barnes and Noble and books and toys. It think she also made paid appearances for birthdays and similar events. Well done you!

Another and unexpected talent from Phobe! One suggestion: Add some stiffening to the glove. It tends to sag a bit and I notice that you have to pull it up a bit agains your body. If it was stiffer it would be more realistic.

Aside from being a Baptist missionary I am one of about a dozen makers of professional ventriloquist figures in the country (it’s impolite to call them dummies). Children love the large mouth puppets but the pro vent figures scare toddlers. The worse thing to overcome is the feeling of awkwardness in talking to your vent puppet/figure. Just go for it and eventually it will take on an alter ego and weirdly talk back to you. I made one that looked like my wife. She would sit on my knee and tell me everything I wanted to heat. My human wife even got jealous saying “You talk to that thing more than you do me.”
@CheMechanical

Actually, I think you did a really good job with your puppet and it looks realistic enough, but I think you’ll do fine. And if you’re entertaining kids, don’t worry too much about the ventriloquism because I am sure they will enjoy it anyway.

Hi Phoebe, here's a quick tip for making the fake hand fool even more people, hihi. 😁Take a picture of your other gloved hand (the real one) while you are holding the parrot. You'll notice some creases in your real hand while the glove holding the parrot is stuffed in comparison. You can create creases in your stuffed glove by pinching the insides and using hot glue (only a little) at around the same places the creases show on your real hand glove. When the glue hardens, the creases will stay in place and give the illusion that an actual hand is inside it. :)
@dougintothesunset
@dougintothesunset Ай бұрын
When you tilted the head over and then put it back upright with your right hand it helped sell the illusion too . . . That's pretty fun . . Thank you for sharing. You need a pith helmet to go with that. I wonder if you could rig the index finger of the fake hand with a wire that you pull from inside the head that would move the fake finger like you were scratching your belly?

Hey Phoebe, great piece! I like how the body segment is shaped and the multi colored/layered wings. Hello. I have lots of fun puppets, too. Including an illusion parrot puppet. Here's a quick tip. "P" is a difficult letter to say without moving your lips. So, you might want to choose an easier name. Also, you can make puppets come out of a box, or flowerpot, or can, etc. Have you checked out Axtell Expressions and Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers? If you want to talk puppets, look me up! I also have a few banjos, accordions and other instrument... Just for fun. Blessings!

I think you've done a wonderful job on it. If you move your real hand around and the fake hand moves around it gives it a bit of "life". Maybe you could get one of those litter pickers where you squeeze a handle and the pincers close and cannibalise it to make a lever somewhere near the mouth where you could squeeze it every once in a while and the pincer end attached to the thumb and fingers of the fake hand. Just a thought. I really admire what you've done. People who notice the fake hand have lost that beautiful innocent quality. They should be focused on the bird. I need to see more of Peter on the channel. :)
