I install a B-Bender into an american standard telecaster. I walk through all the steps, showing where to be careful, and what pitfalls you can run into.

Couple suggestions from a 32 year veteran finish carpenter, hand files are a one way tool, you dull them by going forward and backwards. Also, a Forstner bit would be much cleaner than a paddle bit for the initial hole….

Beautiful work. Have been thinking about building a partsTele for years, with a bender. Now you have provided more motivation, and your thoughtful work is a great guide toward success. Thank you sir. There is a reason why so many great Tele players through the decades have used benders btw. My hat is off to those who can hand-bend as smoothly and precisely as a mechanical bender does.

Thank you. If I might nitpick, I’d recommend adding a touch of oil when filing down (by hand) the slot for the B string. Also, I like to drill a 1/8” pilot thru hole before drilling the large hole for the B bender tower. For me, it still makes it easier to drill from both sides with the large drill bit and I don’t have to worry about going too deep and tearing up the back surface.

Maybe you could make the screw holes for the template match the ones you'll need for the bender itself. Eliminate a step.

The little piece of "paint" on the neck is where the tightness of the pocket scrapes off clearcoat and the pigmented layer of lacquer.. scratched it down to the primer white layer. Impossible to avoid when your making a tight neck pocket on a pastel opaque finished guitar. No worry.

As we say down South, “dead cajones!” The only question I have is why you don’t use the bender mechanism screw holes to secure your router template? But, hey, I’m not the one who just did an amazing job installing!
@mayflyamp

Thank you! When I made the template I didn't think to put the bender screw holes on the template. The template holes all end up covered anyway so I didn't think too much about it.

Because the way he did it didn't work? You're making it overly complicated. There's nothing wrong with measuring and marking. It's a guitar, not a part for a NASA spacecraft.

Excellent video! I have a Tele with this mechanism,i t had been sitting on the case for years, and now when wearing the strap the weight of the guitar makes the b string bend - need to adjust the spring. Any tips on what should be done? A video would be great!!
@mayflyamp
@mayflyamp 5 ай бұрын
Thanks! Regarding the spring, adjusting it depends on which type you have. On a Parsons-White bender, the spring is attached to the body with a screw. To tighten it you take the spring off the screw and re-locate the screw further to the back of the guitar. Then re-install the spring. Don't forget to drill a pilot hole for the screw. I find that moving the screw 1/2" is plenty. On a Parsons-Green bender, the spring is attached to a little hook that's bolted to the underside of the bender mechanism plate. To tighten it, you take off the plate (don't forget to remove the b-string), remove the spring, then carefully bend that little hook in to the back of the guitar. With this method you'd probably only get 1/4", but that still may work. Watch out! In both mechanisms, that spring is REALLY STIFF. Be careful when removing and installing it. Wear something over your eyes to prevent that spring from whipping around and daging you in the face when it slips of of your pliers when you're trying to re-install it. Don't ask me how I know...

Hi Ryan, I'm too focused on my pedal company to do many bender installations. This one was for a friend of a friend, so I made an exception in this case. As other folks have noted, there are several guys around that can do it, including Glaser and Gene Parsons. Either one would do a great job.

I am sure as accurate as you are, that you could make a good deal of money just copying and selling your pattern jig. I bet that was quite difficult to measure and make.

try using a Forstner Bit instead of that cheap inaccurate spade bit. you will not have to worry about "blow-out
@mayflyamp
@mayflyamp Жыл бұрын
Hi there, I have a selection of Forstner bits, but prefer a spade bit for this application. I've seen people get blow out with Forstner, twist, and spade alike, so it always pays to be careful. I got that particular bit so long ago I honestly can't remember if it was cheap or expensive. But I do measure the holes that it makes and it is quite accurate :)

Meridian Green, was an opportunist that got her name on this device by signing up a Partnership deal with Gene Parsons her then-husband. This was, for Fender to mass produce B Bender Telecasters on a Clarence White signature model., and also for any custom shop-ordered Telecasters requiring a String Bender. The b Bender or String Bender was invented by Gene Parsons and Clarence White, not Meridian Green, this woman contributed nothing to its design, and it makes me feel sick anytime I see her name associated with it. Thank goodness Gene got short of her a long time ago, I have met the woman, so I am not basing my dislike for her, on that one action, it's on the basis that she is not a nice person, who lacks any endearing qualities

I just don't get it. Major surgery on a guitar just because the player can't be bothered to move a finger a quarter inch to bend a string? Someone has too much time and money. Just learn to play the guitar.

I love when people who have absolutely no idea of what they're talking about just have to try to tell everyone else what to do. Have you ever even tried one of these or is your brain so small that if you don't like it then no one else can. God gave you two eyes, two ears and one mouth so you can look and listen twice as much as you speak. You must be real fun at parties telling everyone how great you are.
