Thank you so much for this. The last time this happened I was told i had to order speed sensor for a wheel. Had it re-installed, was told the ABS was broken so pay $523.52. This time, thanks to you, I'm donating the savings to a local food bank for Christmas. God bless you Sir. Merry Christmas.

Oh wow! I hit this today... right after an oil change + filling gas. I was pretty distraught as a perfectly running vehicle hit this right after a routine oil change. Took it back to the autoshop and the OBD showed air/fuel ratio sensor is faulty. A $400 repair! Since it was not urgent, I took the vehicle back home, and after watching your video, cleaned the fuel cap and the fuel neck, closed it till multiple clicks. The light still stayed on, and then someone mentioned below that it turned off after a few days, so decided to wait. Lo and behold, after a couple of stop, rest and restarts the VSC light turned off by itself. THIS VIDEO IS AWESOME! Thank you!

for my 2005 4 runner limited- 8 cyl, I changed the Gas Cap and reset the check engine light by disconnecting the battery but the VSC & Trac lights came back on. Additionally when it got so cold, I lost the gas pedal or throttle did not work and the dash lights in question stayed on all the time even when I erased the codes. My lights were on for a different reason though, I used the OBD scanner and it was throttle control issue (forgot the exact code now). Long story short, I change the fuse for the ETCM which was burned and car worked perfectly, throttle is normal and vsc, trac & check engine lights disappeared forever (20,000 mile later still good). It seems to me that these lights can be triggered for various reasons. I hope this help someone with a similar problem.

Hey George. I have a 2003 Toyota 4 runner V8 cyl, limited edition. I have the same problelm VSC TRAC TRAC OFF light and now the Malfunction lamp light just came on after having a mechanic put a new valve gasket cover on, and a radiator flush. The mechanic diagnosed the vsc trac trac off lights as needing a new throttle/pedal sensor. They are charging me 300 bucks. How can I change the ETCM fuse you were talking about? I would like to save some money of i can, already spent 600 buck in repairs this last month.

WOW!! What a LIFE SAVER you are, Paul! We bought our Toyota Corolla brand new in 2009, and never once did we have an issue like the one you're describing here....UNTIL TODAY!! Quite suddenly, this exact problem arises and we have NO clue why! What made it even more frustrating was that TODAY was a big day for us. We are going to have the car transferred to our grandson today, and felt SO good that it was running great and having no problems whatsoever. Then this!! My husband comes in with such a long face, and starts telling me about it. He had tried a few things, and was convinced that it was something major....a bit of a pessimist, I'm afraid. I ran over to the computer and got on KZfaq and found YOU!!! You are so right, Paul, that Toyota does NOT want people to see this video. I'm convinced that thousands of people have paid big bucks to get this repaired, when they could've done it themselves in minutes! For us, it was the THIRD video that did the trick! We just kept watching and trying the next suggestion. I was confident that something was going to work because of how many people had posted their successes! My husband and I thank you, AND our grandson thanks you!! May God bless you and yours.

Thank you for posting this. I just bought my 07 4Runner YESTERDAY (and the light was not on) Whew I was freaking out this afternoon. I went to auto zone for a diagnostic test and they said it was an 800 dollar fix. So thankful this video just saved me so much money. My car is fine now! ☺️

2005 Toyota Highlander limited. I had the oil changed mobil 1 at the same place I've been using for years.Finished the service everything normal, start to drive away after a few blocks the two lights come on. Crap, drive back to the center he checked nothing. Starting to think all kind of things on how expensive this repair is going to cost me.Drove home cursing all the way home. At home i decided to check you tube. Amazed at all the results on this issue. Removed the cap cleaned it cleaned the neck of the tank and lubed the gasket. Next day it was still on, Crap. In the afternoon went out to get something at the market and they were off. Fantastic !!!! Great job proclaimliberty2000 Thank You.

Many thanks! I watched all three of your videos and after I made sure that there was no issue with a dirty rim of the gas receptacle and the O ring of the cap was not cracked, I discovered that for some odd reason I had to repeatedly turn the gas cap until the gas cap stopped clicking. So, in the future, after filling up, I'll be sure that the gas cap has been tightened until there are no further clicking sounds made.

Man did you just save my day. I have an international flight tomorrow at an airport two hours away and today is Sunday so all shops are closed. Wasn’t sure if the car was gonna be an issue to make the drive but it was exactly as you described. Thanks for the fix!

Thanks for posting this video series(Part 1-5). I only needed to go as far as Part 2. This fixed the problem on my 2010 Sequoia. The only difference is my 4Lo was flashing as well. Once I cleaned up the gas cap area, lubed the gasket, and secure the cap tightly, the power returned to my engine. The lights didn't reset until the next morning. Happy to say nothing is on or flashing. You definitely saved me some serious change. Kudos!

Just fixed my 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser using this method. I had not clicked my gas cap tightly, and I believe it caused the check engine light and the VSC lights to come on. I tightened the cap, follwing proclaimliberty2000's directions, and I drove the car about 20 miles. The lights remained on. I then disconnected the battery for about five minutes, and the check engine and the VSC lights both went off!! I had an appointment at Toyota for them to look at the problem check engine and VSC warnings, and I was so happy to be able to cancel!!!! Thank you proclaimliberty2000 and the other posters who recommended the disconnecting of the battery, AFTER you make sure that your gas cap is on tightly! TEN STARS FOR EXCELLENCE!

okay this exact issue happened on my 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. I went to get a state inspection, and shortly afterwards all of these lights came on simultaneously. this was a lifesaver! Sure enough the gas cap was not put on correctly after I left the inspection station. after about 10 minutes of watching this video I tried the solution. I tighten the gas cap and ensured that there were three clicks. The lights stayed on until about 45 miles. They turned off by themselves after that. Thank you so much!

Same vehicle, same problem. All the lights came on after a gas fill up at around 6.5 miles. Tightened the cap and still on after another 7 miles. Restarted and still on. WTF is the deal of 45 minutes, is the ACU to stupid to reset when the problem is resolved? Now I will have to connect it to my analyzer just to reset the worthless emissions scam. Really sick and tired of battling the engine check scams in all my Toyota vehicles. Toyota also has a scam that when the converter gets 5% plugged that damn light will stay on forever but no driving or gas performance loss. Been driving a Sienna now for 5 years now with the stupid light on since I refuse to replace parts that it doesn't need. Also found the knock sensor (another useless one) will force the engine intermittently to loss half it's power. That I call safety hazard and ACU's that do this should be recalled and mandated flashed of replaced. I expect these scams from the American manufactures but now Toyota has jumped in on the legal criminal games as well.

I have a 2008 Toyota Tundra 4.7L V8, this worked for me! Just threw some WD-40 on the gas cap, closed it till I heard the click and went to the gas station to fill it up. The lights stayed on for a bit until I got to the gas station, turned off the engine and then back on. Lights are gone now and stayed off. This helped me out so much, thank you!!

Paul thanks for a very informative video. I did the steps you indicated, opened the gas tank cap, cleaned the tank rim, lubricate the O ring, and on my 2003 Sequoia, the annoying VSC TRAC & Trac OFF, along with check engine light is now gone. I have driven it for 120 miles after the clean up and the lights have not returned. Thanks again for a great fix Sir. May Allah Bless You. Ameen

Thank you so much. This morning my wife called me half way to work and said there is an engine light, VSC and Trac Off lights on our 2007 Toyota Highlander. I had filled the gas tank last night and may have not closed the gas cap properly. My car is at the mechanic and they are going to look at it tomorrow. I already called the mechanic and told him to check the Gas cap before running the diagnostic. Thanks your video helped a lot as I was worried it could be a major repair.

The real deal. I went to Autozone and got the check engine light turned off but still had the VSC/Trac Off problem. Did what Paul suggested about the gas cap and Voila both lights went out immediately. Just ordered a new gas cap from my Toyota dealer ($32.00) for my 2003 Sport Edition 4 Runner. What a fabulous fellow this Paul is to us regular folks. Thank you Paul, and God Bless!

Good post. I bought a new 2008 Toyota Camry XLE back in the day and was headed back to CA from back east. Was on I-70 near Grand Jct Colorado and the little skidding car light and engine light came on along with VSC showing up in my display in the speedometer center. I don't know what prompted me to think of it but got out, took the fuel cap off, used spit to wipe and a last bit of spit to lube the "O" ring on the gas cap. The VSC and little skidding car lights went out immediately but had to drive a few miles before the check engine light went off. God bless Japanese Engineering and their contribution to "throw away" design philosophy.

I just literally had this happen to me yesterday. I was making a left to get on the freeway in my 2008 Toyota Highlander when these lights popped on. I am thinking oh great I have to go sit at the dealership all morning. Also thought it may be time for a new ride. I followed the steps in part 1 and 2 (up to wiping off the gas cap) of your video and this morning after driving the vehicle long enough to warm it up the lights were still on. I lubricated the O ring and bam!! Lights went off. Thank you and may the Lord continue blessing you and your family

Thanks dude, you saved me a trip to the dealer, another thing you guys can do is disconnect the positive battery terminal and wait 30 seconds to a minute, while also making sure the fuel cap is securely tightened. But thanks for the video!

I have a 2016 Toyota 4Runner. The engine and trac off light came on this morning. I stressed all day about it at work and was about to go to the dealer until I watched your video. My gas cap was not clicked on all the way. I followed your instructions to a letter. I did however disconnect the battery for about 15 minutes to reset the light. Lights are now off. THANK YOU!!!

Thanks so much it just worked. One scammy mechanic charged me with speed sensor change for $550 on top of $93 checking fee for this. Not only they were wrong but they couldn’t solve the issue at all.

Have an ‘08 Sienna XLE. had all these random misfire codes (VSC) and even would have to shut my van down as the “traction control” light would blink along with the engine light causing the van to lose power and decrease in speed, till I shut it off and restarted it. And that would take care of it for a week or so then back again, usually one the Highway. So off to the shoulder again as the van would slowly lose power and buck and gas be basically unresponsive Seems like maybe the compression was changing over the 200,000 miles as i started putting premium gas in and the higher octane was the key.. as all the codes went away (once cleared) and never came back. Same spark plugs. I did change one injector (before I switched to premium gas) as it did have that code come up for the number 2. But the check engine lights would still come on. But same spark plugs on all 6 cylinders as those back are just too hard to change without a good reason. Again premium gas and all my check engine lights and blinking lights are a thing of the past and it’s nice having a dash free of those. (Those lights came on probable a dozen times in the past. But now problem solved for like 9 months now and counting. So if it returns might try that. I’ve disconnected my battery several times. And light always would return after a period of time. Also I had cleaned my gas cap in the past. But premium gas is what helped when everything else was just a temporary fix. God bless

This worked for my 2007 Toyota Prius w 161,000 miles. The check engine, vsc and caution (has a triangle and exclaimation point) light turned on one day. I thought it was major, but it really was just a loose gas cap. Thanks a bunch! This was the most simple fix ever.

I hade same issue with Land Cruiser Prado 120 . Front left abs sensor changed and Brake warning light and VSC, TRC every light was still on... After doing this with Gas cap problem was solved...I'm still confused what's gas cap has to do with ABS hydraulic pump and ABS, TRC ECU of this particular model of a car.

It worked for me, the gas cap wasn’t properly closed and the lights went on for check engine, VSC and TRAC. removed the battery for few seconds and the light turned off. You saved me money 😊

THANKS!!! IT WORKED!! Took a bit of tinkering: Gas cap on my Camry was loose! Tightened past the "click" -- warning lights still on. Filled the gas tank--- warning lights still on. But the next time I started my car-- BINGO!! Warning lights gone!! GREAT TIP!!!

YES! YES! YES! After using OBD-II diagnostics, searching in forums, and scaring myself with the potential costs involved, I came across your video. Normally I twist the gas cap all the way to one click, but I didn't the last time I filled up. Checked it and BOOM! Lights off. You saved me LOTS of money! Thank you!

Halo Fourten None. I don’t believe this is the cause of these lights. Turning the car off and on again without making any changes can make the lights go away.

Thanks for this. Changed to gas cap with lock years ago, to prevent Syphoning. Now all of a sudden, im seeing this "Check Engine" and Trac Off" lights. Went to make sure gas cap was on perfectly...and LIGHTS WENT OFF. So, thank you again.

Thanks for the video it helped me with my 2001 sequoia all I did was the gas cap and clean all the speed sensors on each tire, all I did to clean them was wiped the off with a paper towel no water or break cleaner! God bless you all!!!

2004 Toyota RAV 4. Simultaneous display of VSC/TRAC warning light and Check Engine Light. NO switch for VSC/TRAC. Two parts of your counsel were the answer for me...OUTSTANDING: 1. Paraphrasing: "Almost always the gas cap." Then, clean the filler pipe then lube the gas cap gasket and, in my case, add some chassis grease to the fill pipe...because my rubber gasket was showing signs of cracking. 2. DRIVE IT A BIT. The lube on the gas cap was not an "instant" fix. Sensors needed time to be "satisfied" that evaporative emissions were under control. I drove the car several miles and parked. Lights still on. Next day, I got in the car to actually go somewhere, and the warning lights were off. Both of those tidbits were the key...as was the way you presented them. The first one was the fix, but the second one was crucial to being patient enough to actually legitimately test the fix. GREAT advice. Ordering a cap on Amazon. Will clean the grease off the filler neck before installing the new cap. THANK YOU!!

Have an ‘08 Sienna XLE. had all these random misfire codes (VSC) and even would have to shut my van down as the “traction control” light would blink along with the engine light causing the van to lose power and decrease in speed, till I shut it off and restarted it. And that would take care of it for a week or so then back again, usually one the Highway. So off to the shoulder again as the van would slowly lose power and buck and gas be basically unresponsive Seems like maybe the compression was changing over the 200,000 miles as i started putting premium gas in and the higher octane was the key.. as all the codes went away (once cleared) and never came back. Same spark plugs. I did change one injector (before I switched to premium gas) as it did have that code come up for the number 2. But the check engine lights would still come on. But same spark plugs on all 6 cylinders as those back are just too hard to change without a good reason. Again premium gas and all my check engine lights and blinking lights are a thing of the past and it’s nice having a dash free of those. (Those lights came on probable a dozen times in the past. But now problem solved for like 9 months now and counting. So if it returns might try that. I’ve disconnected my battery several times. And light always would return after a period of time. Also I had cleaned my gas cap in the past. But premium gas is what helped when everything else was just a temporary fix. God bless

It might not turn the lights off immediately. Some cars might take 40-50+ miles of driving for the sensors to detect the gas cap is on properly. If it happens a lot, you might need a new gas cap or gasket.

Everyone thinks it's a bad gas cap! The vehicle is telling you something is wrong with the emission system! Mine was a bad ignition coil. This created un -burnt gas vapors!

b c, get yourself a $35 code reader and you'll know if it was an oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter. I put my code reader on and I saw No Code display which means all sensors were fine. It may have been your gas cap and the mechanic or parts store told you it was the catalytic converter and the oxygen sensor. Trust your reader before taking it to any service stations or auto parts stores!!

2007 4runner SR5 I didn’t lock the Gas cap properly so the 3 lights VSC track off and check engine lights lit up I simply tighten the gas cap til clicks then started and lights went off thanks! May Jesus Christ bless you!

On Again? I suggest you get a free code reading from a parts store or repair shop. Could be more than a loose gas cap! Keep driving with that condition could mess up your catalytic converter beside the air pollution!

Paul - Thanks for your information and videos. My daughter has a 2012 Corolla LE and we were experiencing the same issues (Maintenance light on & Trac Off indicator on), We tried all of your recommendations except for the 5th one, and still experienced the same problem. Since I was unsure of what two terminals to cross in the recalibration as outlined in video 5, I just went ahead and removed both battery terminals, cleaned both terminals and post, and reattached (more or less just reset the trouble codes in the car by doing this I think). After that, everything is working fine. Also, this was caused by what you initially stated, while putting gas in her car, she failed to put the gas cap back on... Thanks again for all of your insight. Ron in Corona, CA.
