Part 1 of a 3 part set
PLEASE READ THIS FIRST, IMPORTANT UPDATED NOTES:
1) I can not possible cover it all, and surely missed something. Please contribute and let me know.
2) I was not there, so I can only report on the piles and piles of research that I have done.
3) When I mention them stopping touring after Altamont (Dec 69), I have to make sure now that I mention that I meant "US TOURING". They did perform one show after Altamont Dec 21, 69 in London. They still did tour in Europe after August 70 - Dec 71.
4) my apologies for calling Nellcote Nicolette....I always mis stated it this this way, and it stuck with me...oh well, you get it!
5) there are 2 stories of rape mentioned. I HAVE TO MENTION, Keith said in his book LIFE, for Anita in Jamaica jail, this did not happen and there was no bribe money. So I will say, after, as I make this update......that was mentioned by Tony Sanchez and a Tabloid Ghost writer and then copied by other writers. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN! 'F' Tony for doing this! For the story of Bill/Astrid, I have to say allegedly this occurred, but from a source also.
but will say this, why would someone say such a false statement as horrific as these are.

I just bought the Goats Head 4LP box set after watching these videos on GHS. It wasn’t cheap but I’m so excited. such an underrated album, thanks for bringing its awesomeness to life. great to hear that Mike.....it is all about the turn on's.....and I feel you can find out more about other bands here. I take a lot of pride with that. I have seen GHS Deluxe maybe used for $65, considering 4 albums....and the Brussels Affair alone is worth at least $100. I see plenty of folks have commented in buying albums due to these.....glad to see that! Working on another project...a bit different.

Thank you Ian for your always sincere comments! I am blushing....ty! I just want to see docs the way I would want to see them....tell me something I do not know. I am coming to terms that 'most' of the viewers do not understand or get it.....they are stuck on as followers or just not going outside the box and staying more on the safe / commercial side. I would love for more to have watched it for RnR interest side at least. Yes,.... I am disappointed on the views.....then again, I was always the 'different' guy and I like the similar company!

Another great documentary about an album i didn't know much about! I was born in '76 and i'm a big fan since 1990, when 'Paint it Black' reached (for the second time) number one in The Netherlands, because of the tv show 'Tour of Duty'. @@FlipSideCT Thank you very much Sir for your kind effort in meticulous bringing on a true story of the Rolling Stones to everybody's delight, regardless of whether one is a RS's fan or not. It is a valuable historical record by itself, especially nowadays when every single thing, including all the existing forms of societal relationships, have been subsumed to commodification to the full, whereby all sorts of vulgar monetization of the historical past are particularly blossoming. Therefore your zealous personal endeavour becomes even more valuable, what's more it is being transmuted into one precious gesture of a kind, if you allow, and will be getting due recognition all the more in the days to come. Thank you again Sir, keep on rocking, one Love from Belgrade, Serbia!

@@verysofthard thank you so much for your response and comments. I am sincerely glad when the Stones family can appreciate what was presented. Carefully laid out and with purpose. I just got fed up with the nonsense you point out, and had to take this on for the fans by a fan. Also, a bit fed up with how folks turn against some of the Stones albums and consider themselves fans. I am not an early Stones listener, but would never say the albums are not good. Steve, this was an absolute tour de force of a deep dive. I always relish each documentary video you put out, you clearly source and labour over research and materials when bringing them together, but it's your voice and your narrative that is always the real star. That's what I love most - knowing you are guiding us through and letting us see things through your eyes, with your voice. The voice of an old friend, like being down at a bar with great company. I was simply unaware of much that went down after Nellcote wound up, and the most horrifying were the rape stories/allegations; that would see most bands implode and people break down. The Stones juggernaut had it's own momentum, I guess, but the human carnage always seemed to be from outside the eye of the storm. Anyway, can't wait to dive in to part 2. Cheers- Dean

Thank you Dean sir!! I am making this in a method that I would i like to watch it also. It is a deep intense RnR geekness we have (the ones that can comment and appreciate it). Tell me something I do not know please was one factor as I watched other reviews. The other factor was a listener needs to understand it all and know how to listen to a Stones album/song. It is a science....like analyzing a film in a college art class. Their external and self induced trauma contributed to what we hear now. That is the beauty. always appreciate your support! Absolutely fantastic review Steve. Wow. After seeing this I am definitely considering grabbing this box set. I must be a real fan because this album has always been one of my favorites. I also loved Mick Taylor's period with the band. From Bleed to IOR&R. That period was simply incredible. Especially Exile & Goats. The first time that I heard Silver Train, 100 Years Ago, Hide Your Love and the unforgettable Star Star I was sold. Forgot about Mr D. So so cool. Soem of the photos and the video that you showed I have never seen before. Loved seeing the Goats Head sessions photos. I would love to get a copy of that benefit show that they did in LA with Cheech & Chong. I wonder if that ever made it onto a bootleg or video for that matter? I do remember reading about Mick Taylor's unhappiness with the band. He was clearly one of the best young guitar players that I ever heard at that time. He could play the blues better than anyone. I completely forgot about Jimmy Miller. I think that most of those guys who played on Goats are sadly gone. Are you sure that you were not a writer, author or documentary editor before you joined the VC? This part one is something to be proud of Steve. Can't wait for part two~ Rob/Boston

Well said and love it Rob! Check out POPMARKET to buy it I think they are the cheapest...I spent $95 w/shipping, and found a cupon online. I think the price may have gone up though. Silver Train is All Down The Line's sister.....and people do not realize that . I purposely search for mostly non common photos. I do not know anything about the benefit show's recordings other then what i showed live (w/o audio). Mick T just kills it! Many forget Jimmy Miller......I would love to do a piece on him.....he is worthy of it. His 1/2 sister is trying to get him into the RnR HOF (not a fan of the HOF, but he should get some recognition). LOL, my background was filming/editing/producing in Weddings Bar Mitzvahs, events, concerts, commercials and some documentaries. A business I did with my brother and then on my own in CT. I stopped about 6 years ago professionally. So yes, I do have the know how and the head on how to put it together. I enjoy taking nothing and creating something (ala Jimmy Miller). thank you for all!! Trying for Part 2 hopefully around Sept 4.....just so much work involved. cheers steve

Hello Steve; Hope you are doing well, & staying healthy. If anyone in the VC could put together a video album analysis of the Rolling Stones it's you. Done in your inimitable way, the archival footage & the picture gallery make this album review shine through as a document of events that transpired at the time. This deluxe edition of Goat's Head Soup gives the listener an opportunity to ( hopefully) finally enjoy all the music that was created. Really poignant description of Keith's relationship with Gram Parsons during the Exile on Main Street sessions. With Jimmy Miller manning the board. Good description of the bands " problems " during the recording phase of the LP's. Informative & well presented in the context of the events that occurred. Looking forward to part 2. Till then, take care. Tina & Pat!~

What can I say....hugs and TY's!!! I can not let things go on, as people just bash this album / consider as trash, and do not understand what it was about. I think this is my very favorite Stones album, with Sticky Fingers being a close 2nd. I remember swapping an old (at that time) Roberto 'Bob' Clemente baseball card for a pink 8 track tape of GHS back in 1973, (I was in 6th grade!) and I've never regretted making the trade. Despite all the crazy stuff happening 'behind the scenes' at this time, Mick J, Mick T and the rest of the boys managed to put together one of their finest collections of songs ever. The blistering lead guitar playing on 100 Years Ago, Heart Breaker, Silver Train and of course, Winter is just out of this world. Coming Down Again is indeed Keith's finest moment for vocals, and features a fantastic bass line by Taylor. Both Bill and Keith are absent on a handful of these numbers, but there's nothing missed. (Check out the bass line on Silver Train!) I have to say the story about Bill and Astrid shocked me, as I'd never heard mention of that. It was after reading your notes that I realized it 'may or may not' be true. Thanks for clarifying this. I thought some of your song reviews were a bit tepid on Part 2, and were maybe a bit dismissive of some of these tracks (Heart Breaker could've been left off?) but hey, that's what it's all about- expressing our opinions, thoughts and feelings about the music so many of us grew up on. Thanks for all the long hours of hard work you put into this wonderful GHS series, as well as all the others. For Stones fans like us, we really appreciate those small details, and love going over the tracks, hearing them again for the first time. Peace....

well said Joe, thank you for sharing and letting me know your comments. I really liked the Clemente story of your swap...what a bargain! . As my wife just bought me a book that shows every Topps card from the 50's to 79', and was just reviewing Clemente's today, as I remember it well. Yes, everyone has there own thoughts and feel. I happen to dig everything (98%) they gave us 68-82. I hear each song like it is the first time, and like you a fan. So thanks for being there, and enjoying these. working on B&B Pt 2 now. cheers

For decades I have thought to myself, Mick Taylor is crazy for quitting the Stones. What's his problem ? But being on the outside looking in, And only knowing such a tiny amount of how their day to day was, I could not figure out why. But thanks to this video I now understand. This video more than the other three that I watched, Showcased how their inner circle (which seemed to be growing larger) lived in the eye of the hurricane. Then at almost regular intervals got sucked into the hurricanes cross winds of arrests, Drug busts, short intervals in jail, Almost semi constant home invasions by the police. And getting drug habits and kicking them also at regular intervals. All the while keeping the business of running the Band and recording & mixing And writing songs for the next tour. I will say this, With the innocuous life style they live, These boys had no problem looking for subject matter to write songs about. It always pissed me off how rude these reporters were to the Stones. Maybe they looked at them and became very jealous because the Stones have the world on a string and they are loaded with the talent to write and play songs decade after decade. And the older the Stones get the more they get back into their musical roots and the more ambitious they become. Meanwhile these reporters are stuck in a a dead end job. And yea, Money is nice to have but the Stones great great grand children will be receiving checks from B M I or A S C A P long after they are gone. So we know, it's not about the money Its about their love of their craft and the love of the blues and their original songs. Sorry for the super long note.

so well said. TY. I can not say much but to just agree. Their core and environment brought out this great music. Fans just look at albums as a record compared to the last one and it is always measured and compared. Putting it all aside that is not how the Stones built themselves. Too many bands out there that kept the same model over and over again, and bore the hell out of me. cheers my friend! no problem saying what you think, especially that it is classy and tasteful.

I'm glad that you mentioned, but did not delve too much in to, "Cocksucker Blues." I found a version of it on KZfaq and I found it interesting, but more sad than anything. There is no greater example of how the "Peace and Love" sixties devolved into the hedonism, selfishness and exploitation of the seventies. Of course, I do not wish to judge the Rolling Stones too much. I engaged in "seventies activity" that I am am not too proud of ... with far fewer resources.

Hi Steve. Love your passion. Was wondering where you rank Sister Morphine on your fav list. Did Ry Cooder or Mick Taylor play the slide? Love it. Top 5.

I went to the ‘72 show at RFK stadium. Stevie Wonder opened I told my friends how great the stones were on the drive there. They sounded like a crappy garage cover band. Maybe Kieth didn’t sleep for a few days? It did feel exotic having the Stones from England on stage in front of me as a 17 year old kid 🤟

That might be the best year they were on and so tight. The sound however is another story. There is a bootleg on YT July 4th 72. audio is poor but I still would have loved to see that. thanks for sharing.

Excellent job as always, Steve. I know some of this period, but most of it is from Keith's book, so this helped fill in some other material for me. Mick Taylor period is my favorite as well.

Thanks Kris......I needed to break it down to where it needed to go, as a Stones head it was bothering how injustice folks tear this album up and go with the flow. Also how folks just look at Wikipedia for their information. I am getting tired of of these reviews and had to bring some clarification ASAP.

In 1972 I was 18 and doing all of the stockwork in the basement of Hunter's Books in Beverly Hills. I got a call on the interstore phone - "Dennis, the Rolling Stones are here!" and I quietly ran up the stairs to the salesfloor. There was Charlie, there was Mick Taylor. They were in the antique section of the store. Later they told me - "Mick bought a first edition of Alice in Wonderland" and Charlie bought some exquisite large art books. Sure, seems like a long, cold winter...

wow....seeing them out of their element and the 3 of them. I had seen some footage somewhere and not sure what time period of one of them in a book store. Mick's investment probably was a good one! that is cool, thanks for sharing!

@@FlipSideCT - if that bookstore was in L.A. then it was Hunter's. It was considered the ultimate bookstore on earth. I did the slavework there for 3 years. Horribly I stole some books to sell and trade. When I went back 10 years later to make amends the owner Lew had died and the store was gone.

@@dennismason3740 you tried, and hopefully washed away the guilt. But cool to work in a store like that!

@@FlipSideCT - the amends are built into the intent, the effort. Three years of backbreaking stockwork, moving and organizing literally tons of books every day for a 1.50 (US) an hour. So cool.
