If your Martin's binding is falling off, find a qualified luthier to put it back on. If you're the original owner, contact Martin's Warranty Department.

Thank you! I knew it was something like that. Tbh, I wasnt fond of that guitar. While it had an amazing pickup system with both xlr and 1/4" out, played well as a Martin should, it didnt have great bass reaponse, possibly due to laminated sides. The satin finish was also a little slippery. But, yes, terrific gigging guitar and good value at that proce point. Thx again. P.s. really enjoy the vids.

It is a Martin “DM”, they’re fantastic guitars. You should be able to find them used from 5-800, which is incredible value.

I wonder if it's because the upper and lower parts of the guitar are bound first when the binding's glued on, and the narrow waist last? This would put the binding in this region under stress, rather like a bowstring, and eventually it springs out from the wood. I had my hands on a Martin affected by this problem a while ago - a lot of pressure ('force' might be a better wood!) was needed to push the binding back into place. It would have needed some very strong glue to hold it back in place. It certainly seems that Martin has changed something, perhaps the glue, type of plastic, or method of gluing the binding - perhaps all of these! Whatever, it's not good and I think Martin should be telling customers about why this has happened.

They’ve been binding guitars since the 1830’s. So they know how to do it the right way. It’s definitely not negligence on their part, something changed in the ingredients from their suppliers and there’d be no way to know this would happen years later. My friend who’s a Martin repairman and does several of these repairs a day, said when he takes it apart, cleaned out all the old glue and uses A new glue, they don’t come back. He believes the factory glue is reacting with the binding and causing it to continually shrink.

@@rockereb Thanks for your interesting comments. Since your friend's doing several of these repairs a day, then it seems to me that it's a huge problem, bigger than we're aware of from reading forums and looking at KZfaq. For interest, a 2019 D-18 has just been sold on eBay, described as mint - but there on the back at the waist, a slight gap could be seen where the binding was coming adrift. I won't be buying a Martin made in recent years, that's certain!

Hello! my martin D18 has the same problem after 8 years, the bindings have come off completely. No good luthier here in my area. I think I can glue them myself, but how do I fix the numerous finish chips that are there?

@@glfrayt if you bought it new, check w/ Martin it’s covered under warranty. Even if it’s not. Ask them the closest certified Martin repairman, that person will be very well skilled in binding repair because it’s so common. I’m not trying to be harsh, so please don’t take it that way, but If you haven’t done binding repair before I wouldn’t recommend starting on a D18. It can get ugly real quick. Glue can run and ruin your finish and touching up missing chips takes drop filling, leveling and buffing out which can look really rough when not done right. I’ve recently had two martins in the shop with bad diy binding reglues where the finish was all messed up. Hope that’s helpful.

@@rockereb first of all thanks for the reply! I am writing from Italy. I contacted Martin and he said: "C. F. Martin & Co., Inc. does not offer an international warranty. The Distributor that supports your country and dealer network is responsible for warranty coverage." Unfortunately the shop where I bought the guitar has closed. And I can't find a good luthier around here who will agree to do the work. Basically the guitar has been sitting idle for a few months because I don't know what to do. That's why I was thinking at this point of doing it myself, although I guess that's not a good idea.

@@glfrayt i’m sure that you could learn the skill to rebind. I just wouldn’t recommend learning on that guitar. I have a friend Massimiliano who is a world class Italian guitar builder. Here is his website reach out to him. If he doesn’t do repair I’m sure he could recommend someone. www.maxmonte.com/ Also check with Italian builder Giuliano www.iuliusguitars.com he may know someone as well.

The binding shrinks. It's cheap and a bad design. I've had my D28 repaired by a "certifiect Martin Luthier" and it came out fine, but he showed me where he inserted a small section at the neck block to complete the shorter binding. What I also found when I got it home was he'd ripped out the rosewood side panel, glued and refinished without informing me. Also a bunch of dings around the top plate edges. NOT happy, but the binding was covered under the warranty. Two years later the binding is falling off again along with the front binding in the curve near the sound hole. I'm using painters tape to hold it all in place. Martin needs to have a recall, but they use this binding on hundreds of thousands (or more) instruments. Likely I'll either glue it myself or wait for Martin to come up with a solution. It's VERY common on all instruments that use this plastic binding for a lot of years back. I know of no other instrument company that has this problem. Including my 54 year old Yamaha FG160.

@@raystargazer the binding is shrinking because it is reacting to the glue they used. My buddy who is Martin certified and does 4 to 6 of these a day said if he just Reglued the same area that is loose it will continue to shrink everywhere else and pull off I need to be re-glued again. The ones that he has pulled all the binding off scraped out all the glue and re-glued it have not come back.

I have two 53 year old Yamaha red labels with body binding and they’re both fine. I’m nervous about spending $3k on a CEO-7 but I really want one.
