Part 14: The Sense of Duty
“Today we live in a materialist world that despises nobility and adores comfort and self-gratification. This mentality, instead of being turned towards the cross, sacrifice, effort, and building the kingdom of Christ, is turned towards self-interest, earning money, and the pleasures of the moment.
“To form your son in the spirit of duty, prevent him from adopting the good-life mentality with your own example of taking your religion seriously by leading the family in prayer, becoming indignant at offenses against God and the Catholic Faith, and being willing to sacrifice and fight when necessary.
“To form a man of character, a father should say ‘A man must do this’ or ‘A man must never do that.’ This will form his courteous behavior by knowing how to behave and why.
“Your son will be checking to see if you are also fulfilling your duty and to see if you practice what you preach. If you want him to be dutiful, honorable, and honest, you must act as such or your words will mean nothing to him.”
