Thank you so much for taking time to make this video. I'm not a mechanic, live in an area where the military and elderly get their pockets rapped. This video helped me take care of my moms PT cruiser that she "HAD TO HAVE". Even though it's been problems from day #1. She won't let go.

Glad that the video helped Nick! Its hard to find a mechanic you can trust either with your money or with the quality of their work. Thats the reason for these videos. Appreciate you finding the channel and fro taking the time to comment. Make sure to subscribe and hang around to check pout some of my other videos.

Hey! I resemble that remark! LOL! Yes, I can relate to your mum. I too am very attached to my 2009 PT Cruiser (a plain janer) and have had pretty well all major stuff redone on it except for this radiator. Hopefully I won't get ripped off when I go get it fixed as I don't have anyone nearby that can help. But watching these videos has truly helped me understand the process at least and the amount of work it would take to do it.

Thanks for all this great info. Have a 2001 PT Cruiser. Water pump replaced, belt replaced, thermo replaced,, fans replaced, cap replaced and it would still heat up with the air on gurgle at the overflow, etc. The radiator was all that was left. Replaced it today and no more heat ups. In fact, @ 85 degrees outside here in Reno the fan kicks on and off at an idle. I was thinking it was a head gasket but lucked out on that one. The radiator was about half full of junk on the outside you couldn't even see through it so little cooling was going on there. Thanks again. Walter

Glad it wasnt the headgasket! Now you have a cooling system you dont need to be concerned with for a while. Clogged radiators can be a bit hard to diag so days. Best method is feeling the upper and lower hoses to see if you feel a big difference.....if you do then typically the radiator is clogged. Thanks for commenting and for watching. Thank you so much for sharing this video! I'm not a mechanic at all, and I DO NOT ever even try to work on my car by myself, but I always enjoy watching and learning...at least to get an idea of how hard of job the mechanic is getting into with my car. I have a 2004 PT Cruiser, and about 3 months ago it began running hot on me...out of the blue. It was 105 outside that day, and I was driving out on the interstate around 80 mph and decided to turn on my A/C and get cool. I kicked back and turned up my music to enjoy the rest of my ride home. THANKFULLY, I happened to look down at my gauges and noticed that my temp gauge was up around the 3/4 mark, but not into the RED ZONE...yet. I quickly turned off the A/C and turned on my heater, rolled down my windows, to not burn up in the heat, and the temp gauge began to drop slowly back down to the 1/2 mark. I decided to keep going and get my car home. The next day I took it to my mechanic and he said my fan motor was NOT working at all....so, I had him change that out and also go ahead and put in a new thermostat while he was in there and flush the radiator and re-fill it with new coolant. Well....that DID NOT WORK. At first I thought it was all good, because we had the car sitting and idling with the A/C on, and all was fine, but as soon as I took it down the road heading home, it began to over heat again..QUICKLY. I turned around and took it right back to him, and it was actually STEAMING OVER at the cap area. Turned out that the original cap was no good anymore, so we put a new one on, and that stopped that....but...the car was still over heating only when driving it over 2 RPM's for any length of time...and especially if you turned on the A/C. I have no oil in my coolant, no milky looking stuff in my oil, no white smoke blowing out the back, no leaks are found anywhere, no noises of any kind...so I've had 3 mechanics tell me that they honestly believe that I have a partially blocked radiator, and to just put a new one on it...so that's what I'm going to have done now. I've bought my new radiator, upper and lower hoses, 4 clamps, and a couple gallons of coolant. I hope and pray that this does the trick, because if it doesn't work, then I just can't even begin to think of what else it could be causing the over heating....except for a warped cylinder head???? PLEASE DON'T LET IT BE THAT!!!!!

Fantastic video. I'm working on my son's 2001 PT Cruiser - he's experiencing the over heating issue that most owners seem to be going through as well. We've replaced the rad cap, thermostat and cooling fan - which btw was done by the previous owner with one heck of a hack job done on splicing the wires which had burned out. Next step is to replace the radiator with the expectation that his current one has a blockage in it somewhere. There's no typical signs of damage to the motor (ie: smoke, smell of rad fluid, loss of power, fluid leaks, etc) so I'm pretty sure it's not the head gasket. I'll be ordering the part from Rock Auto today and will surely have this video on my play list while doing it ;)
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 7 жыл бұрын
Usually its a coolant leak somewhere.....fan issue....and some times radiator restricted. Now if its ran hot too long and too much.....a new issue can come up which is a warped head. You said that you ruled a few things out.....there are some tests such as a block test that checks for combustion chamber gases in the cooling system and also a cylinder leak down test to use air in the cylinders to see if any escape into the cooling system. It would be nice to be 100% certain that it doesnt have any head issues. The radiator replacement is a logical step.....once replaced, take the tanks off the old radiator and look to see if any ports are clogged so that you can have peace of mind that you may have found the issue. In some cases you can use a laser thermometer to check both radiator tanks to see if a big difference in temperature. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe. Keep watching!

Just heard back - turns out the previous spliced wiring on the cooling fan had shorted out the parts in a control box (pardon my lack of terminology). Engine checked out well and so did the rad. Because of the age of the car, we're just going to wire a switch into the dash for the fan ($50) instead of replacing all the electrical components ($$$$). Thanks again for all your information! Definitely checking back here in the (hopefully not so near) future!

+Bill Shannon thanks for the update......wiring up a switch isn't the method I would use because of the current draw of the fan. You could eventually smell smoke so be careful.

Nice video. We just got a used 2007 PT Cruiser, drove it home and instantly the radiator shot out antifreeze from the overflow tank. After reviewing numerous videos and comments on the PT Cruiser one would think Chrysler would have fixed the overheating issue but it appears they haven't. The previous owner replaced the radiator fan. I've read many people claiming that their overheating issue was because of the space between the AC cooling and radiator fins which collects leaves, dirt and road debris such as small pieces of plastic getting stuck between the AC and radiator fins preventing air flow. I do not know if the previous owner cleaned that space out when he replaced the radiator fan but looks like that is what we will now be doing to figure out this overheating issue. I also notices the 'bleeder valve' doesn't look like it has ever been used to 'bleed' the air out of the cooling system (it's covered in rust) so who knows if there is any air pockets.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 5 жыл бұрын
Afternoon. Sounds like that’s why they got rid of it. Hate that they didn’t tell you that when they sold you that. As far as what you hear on the Internet.....all vehicles have a space between the radiator and condenser. I haven’t seen a single PT with an over heat issue cause by debris accumulating in that area. Possible issues is that the radiator fan had a bad speed.....(motor has a low and high speed set of windings so basically 2 motors in one) and that may have caused an over heat issue and then created a new issue. Cause and effect. It could be air trapped as you mentioned and it could now be a warped head.
@zman8845
@zman8845 5 жыл бұрын
I chatted with the seller today and he said he never bled the system using the bleeder valve. I believe him because the valve looks like it has never been used, ever. So that is going to be my first starting point. I'm hoping that will end the overheating issue. I'll check the fan for proper operation also.

You don’t need to do anything. Sounds like you have a manual trans? They make the radiators to work for both. So if you a manual trans then leave those two fittings alone. They won’t get used….they are the auto trans cooler fittings.

Great video. I was wondering because I have to change the radiator fan on a 2003 PT Cruiser GT Turbo and because the previous owner replaced the original turbo radiator (with removable upper inlet) with a non turbo one (non-removable inlet) I am going to have to remove the radiator to accomplish this. On my model there is an A/C condenser as well as some type of additional cooler (I am guessing Transmission) attached to the front of the radiator as well. I believe I need to try and remove the radiator and fan as a unit, is there any way to do this without disconnecting/discharging that A/C condenser and/or disconnecting that cooler as well? My fan is already disconnected completely from the radiator but it wont come out with the radiator still in place, I am doing this repair outside in my driveway (freezing cold now) so if you know the smoothest way to pull this off I would be very very grateful and will seriously consider sending you and your shopmates some beers through the mail :) Thanks.

+Max Speedster Sorry about the delay. I haven't had to remove any radiator inorder to get the fan out. I am a bit confused from what your saying to please excuse me....sometimes its hard to see it in my mind when I read it from a screen. I pretty much remove all the radiator fans the same way on the PT. Once I remove the radiator grille and upper metal radiator support I can pull the radiator back enough to get the fan out. Double check it to make sure your not missing any thing. I assume you have seen my video on the fan removal.......kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p5imgs9lyN_SgaM.html

+MotorCity Mechanic Yes sir I have watched about a half dozen different ones, and couldn't figure out why I was having so much trouble. I just found out a couple days ago that I have a non-turbo radiator installed in my car. The standard PT Cruiser radiator has an upper hose inlet that is permanently fixed to the radiator, the turbo PT's have less clearance between the fan and the engine so the upper radiator hose inlet is removable (comes off with 2 bolts and there's a gasket) that is the only difference between the two radiators, either one will cool the engine just fine. The non-turbo radiator is much cheaper so I guess that's why some folks are sticking them into their turbo PT's. The problem is that once you do that, the fan will not slide out on it's own. There is no room to rock the radiator forward to get the fan past the upper inlet as seen in most videos on this topic. My fan has to be pulled straight upwards and that is impossible with the upper radiator inlet in the way. I wish KZfaq would allow me to post pics cause I would show you exactly what I mean cause I am probably doing a poor job of explaining it lol.

+Max Speedster I think I saw the style you mentioned in the service info....its shown in a drawing and makes since from your description. The service info states to unbolt the radiator hose inlet that your describing. I believe the key is to remove the hose inlet and then you should be good to go.

+MotorCity Mechanic You are exactly right sir, and I would totally do that if I had the correctly radiator installed, my inlet does not remove so I have to remove the radiator to get the fan out. My question is, can I remove the radiator without having to remove the A/C condenser and that cooler that I have mounted to the front of my condenser as well?

+Max Speedster Sorry about the delay......the service info states that you do not need to remove the Freon which means the condenser does not need to be removed. It does say that you have to removed the p/s lines and cap them off. The intercooler unbolts as well. That is under normal situations and the fan being removed in the steps. It will be trial and error being that they put the wrong radiator in and you have no room. Let me know how it turns out

They were wanting to charge $500 to replace my cracked radiator. But this shows me I should be able to easily do it for nothing!

Its hard to say without seeing it in person. It may be a thing where maybe you fixed the cause but it may have done damage from having run too hot and now you have a new issue. Possible warped head is one item. No one thing that I can point you towards at the moment. As far as worth.....thats a hard one. There is a point where you cut your loses. Some say fixing it is cheaper then a car payment each month and then you know what you have instead of getting someone elses headache. It also depends on the shape the vehicle is in and any other things its going to need as well.

I am replacing the radiator in a 2007 or cruiser. Every radiator that I have looked at for the car does not have the same fittings as the original that came out. At the bottom of the new radiator has the ports in diff. Locs. Compared to the orig. I have searched and searched for the exact replacement and can't find one that matches. Do I need to get new hoses? What should I do? Please help.

It has an internal condensor I believe that mounts to the radiator there are 2 hoses on each side the passenger side looks like it has 2 aluminum fittings that go into the side with a nut that tightens the fittings to the internal and no ports on the bottom of the original radiator just the in and out going hose hookups

It is the touring edition. I don't know if that is the turbo or not. This is my wife's aunts car and she only knows how to put gas in the car and drive. I don't have any info other than that
