We fit a new head gasket to this Webb Lawn Mower fitted with a Briggs And Stratton 450E engine. We also check the valves for leaks and reset the valve clearance to 6 thou for the inlet and 8 thou for the exhaust.
Will it run, let's fine out.

The engine model number is stamped (very lightly) into the side of the engine body on these little engines. They are called "8P" and "9P" engines as their model numbers begin with these numbers and letters.

You may be asking yourself why Martin set the valve clearance "backward," however, intakes loosen with use, and exhausts tighten. Martin is extending future engine life.

Mister Retrorestore, I understand your frustration in searching for the specifications for this engine. I went through the same thing about two years ago. I found nothing online so I went to the source. Please note the spark plug gap is only .020 inch! Here is a chart of information on this engine which I got directly from Briggs and Stratton: “8P” & “9P” Briggs and Stratton single cylinder vertical shaft ohv engine Torque values: Flywheel nut_____________________60 ft. lbs. Another quick bit of information for future reference for you. The plastic top of the choke lever in the carburetor will often, after time, begin to drag on the metal bracket to which the carburetor is mounted. This will cause the choke to stick in the closed position which will cause the engine to puke black smoke and will eventually foul the spark plug. The solution for this problem is very easy. Simply file the corners on the top of the plastic choke stem which protrudes above the carburetor so it does not hang on the carburetor mounting bracket. The engine model number is stamped (very lightly) into the side of the engine body on these little engines. They are called "8P" and "9P" engines as their model numbers begin with these numbers and letters. I hope this information will help you, sir. Thanks for the video and "Happy wrenching"!

Briggs 450e plug gap. 020in. inlet and exhaust valve between. 004-.008in or . 10-.20 mm in new money. Spark Plug torque is 20nm. I have the same engine on my mower and have the original engine manual. Great little profit on that 1.

Martin: If your not 100% sure on EXACT valve clearance...then allow a couple of thou more on each... To avoid possible valve burnout...🇬🇧👍

Martin your engine numbers for this engine would be on the crankcase between the oil filler and exhaust. It's not the easiest place to locate them and you will require a bright torch. The number should start with a number then a letter (this engine would have 8P as the first two digits). The serial number sticker is only for dealer and warranty use. Only the early models had the engine numbers stamped on the plate you pointed out.

@@retrorestore I used to work for a mower dealer so I know where they hide the engine numbers on most of the Briggs and Stratton, Honda, Kawasaki engines and other engines. If you ever have a similar one of these Briggs and Stratton engines with a fuel issue the engine number is definitely needed to buy the correct plastic fuel jet or carburettor because they aren't easy to clean compared to the older sprint engine carburettors. Also they do the similar engines with the same design but with different power outputs, this is why the engine numbers are crucial to get.

@@retrorestore I saw that you mentioned it in the video. Unfortunelty I never took apart a new machine to that extent. Even the old ones the head bolts had a little resistance to them bc the had a lock tite on em. I THINK newer machines lack the lock-tite on em for economic reasons. I wouldn't be surprised if the headbolts worked themselves loose too due to poor OC.

i've got a Murray 450E the rocker arms have the #4 stamped on them (i saw that yours had a #3 stamped on them). it takes a 1/4" socket to tighten them. the allen screw was missing when i got it. what size allen nut do i need? i can't tighten the rocker without them as you know, thanks.
