I pretty much had given up on my dead lawn mower not starting after doing some other videos about gas and spark troubleshooting. About to head down to the local hardware store to pick up a ridiculously priced electric mower. I did one more search seeing if it could possibly be anything else and came across this video. The symptoms were spot on and when I took off the valve cover sure enough the exact valve was stuck. Took a bit to unstick it and get it working smoothly and then put it all back together. Next day after a few pulls it started up and ran perfectly to cut my lawn. Thanks Steve for the great video helping me get my mower up and running again. Looks like the electric mower will have to wait a few more seasons.

I have been inside that valve cover of a honda engine countless times! So I figured I would comment about this. First, I always take a BernsOmatic propane torch and go around the valve cover and put a little heat around the edge before I start prying on the cover because they don't come off as easy as yours came off unless someone has had it off before. But it has been my experience that you will bend the crap out of it trying to prying it off cold! Honda bond is some of the best sealant i have ever seen used in the mechanical world! That and Permatex ultra black are brutal to remove a sealed pan gasket with it on without applying the heat first. Now, once you get the cover off of a honda there are two things you should look for right away! First thing is whether you have an old style valve cover or a new style cover because it it doesn't have the piece of metal that keeps the timing belt from being able to jump the teeth on the cam gear you could have a engine that has jumped time with the old style valve cover. And next thing you will want to check ( And especially if you're dealing with a horizontal shaft engine like you would find on most power washers is if the exaust rocker arm is cracked! I have seen this happen several times before when it has been ran with a loose adjustment and it starts beating the crap out of it! And it's always the exaust side that this happens to due to the heat that the exaust valve side experiences. 😉

You're the man, Steve! I fixed my old Honda generator the same way. It had been stored for over a year and would not start. Thanks for this video. I was working on my wife's niece's nice Honda mower that I determined had no compression. It was about 7 years old, but had sat for about the last three years because they had moved to a new home and had no grass to mow. Once I got the valve cover off, the problem was exactly like your video shows, I squirted some carb cleaner down the valve stem and guide, and wallah, it freed up in a few minutes of working it in and out. I adjusted the valves and put the cover back on and it runs like a champ. Easiest fix for what I thought was going to be a major problem. Thanks again.

You are a national treasure Steve. I've been home from work for 2 months now during this CV19 mess. At first I used your videos to get my neighbor's trimmers and mowers running. Her husband passed away a few years ago and everything had been sitting since then. Our deal is I could use all his good stuff on my lawn if I cut her grass too, which I'd have done anyway. It seemed when something would stop running he'd go buy a new one. So the shed had 3 blowers, 2 trimmers, 2 mowers, and an edger all in various states of neglect. I had so much fun cursing, crying, and questioning the educational requirements of modern engineers that I went online and bought 5 mowers, 2 trimmers, and a pressure washer for $100. I've gotten 1 trimmer, 2 mowers, and the pressure washers running. I'm not doing it to profit, although that's fun too, it's more to keep my sanity. Thank you again!

I am 68 and having been playing with engines since I was old enough to turn a wrench. I always learn something new from you. My friend and I had a similar problem to this one. It was on a Kawasaki V-twin in an Argo ATV. The intake valves felt like they were welded into the head, and the push rods dropped out. We stuffed nylon rope into the cylinders to keep the valves from dropping into the cylinder, took the valve springs off, worked the valves loose, then used acetone to clean the valve stems. We had a chance encounter with an Argo dealer at a outdoor show. He was familiar with sticking valves on Argos, and he told us how to fix it. We were going to pull the engine out. He saved us a lot of work! Now I see we could have left the valve springs on and simplified the job. Your penetrating oil formula would have worked great. Keep up the excellent work! Thank you Steve!

I had that problem on a liquid cooled Kawasaki 425 John Deere when I used Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer. I had a 5 gallon tank of it. It happened twice on the same tank of gas. So after I fixed the valve the second time, I didn't shut it off until it ran out of gas. Put in a fresh tank of gas with no Sta-Bil never had a problem since and that was over 10 years ago. I don't use Sta-Bil anymore.

@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon You're the best! That makes my day when someone as you with so many YT subscribers takes the time to personally reply to me. I'm an American, grew up in New Jersey, as an adult moved to Florida for 6 years and now have lived in Mississippi where my wife's from and have lived here with her since the mid 1980's. What I'm driving at is that my step grandmother was from Toronto in one side of my family and an aunt and her 3 children were Canadians. The younger girl used to play goalie for us as teenagers in street hockey games and she was a beautiful blonde. All of them loved Canada and were the best of people "no doubt", like you brother! Thanks again for all!

Thanks for making this video!!!! Just had this happen to my daughter’s lawnmower with a 190 on it. I pulled the valve cover and there it was, stuck all the way down. I could not get it to move at all no matter how much carb cleaner it sprayed on it I could not get it free. I took off the valve spring, valve steam seal, and removed the carb and sprayed the valve stem in the port. Finally all at once it popped out and was completely free. I put it all back together and it now runs great!!!

Most Murray mowers are powered by Briggs and Stratton or some may be Tecumseh engines. Look at it closely and see what it is. Then, check through Steve's videos to see how to diagnose your problem. Clean oil in the right amount, right SAE weight and never overfilled, fresh gas, a new spark plug properly gapped AND a clean air filter to start with first. Murray/MTD make a majority of mowers that are "branded" as other manufacturers products. download the engine manufacturers PDF for that exact engine. Briggs and Stratton engines have three sets of numbers that identify each particular engine known as the Model, Serial and Code. When ordering parts you must have those three sets of numbers and if you call or go into a local supplier, it's the first thing they will ask you for. Older engines have them stamped on the metal cowl that fits over the engine that the recoil starting winder is contained in, just above where the spark plug is, the spark plug wire coming from the coil emerges from a little bend in that cowl. The cowl is also what directs cooling air down onto the engine block when it's running. The numbers are right there. Wipe off the grime with a rag dampened with some WD40 and you'll see them. Make sure you write them down EXACTLY. Every part designated for those numbers will be the right part for your machine. The newer versions of the 400, 450, 500e series engines have a QR Code and a serial number on a sticker to aid in downloading information and parts from the factory. Hope this helps. Good luck... get some tools and start turning wrenches!

I really appreciate how this guy isn't a pervert like a lot of other mechanics. Stuff like that makes me wildly uncomfortable so I appreciate this guy's passion, decency, and efficiency. You don't have to sit through a 10 minute symptom checklist and sob story (although I'm guilty of that myself). This guy and Home Garage are my #1 go-to small engine channels for entertainment and information. If I have time to spare I'll go to Bruce's shop because he gives a lot of details and is generally a good channel too!

Steve, I had a Plate tamper with a Honda engine that was a buddy's he lent me then never wanted it back when I offered to return it. Well, years went by and it acted this same way. No compression when he finally wanted it back. I wound up doing him a solid and swapped his non running engine off and put another one I had bought before this off a guy for $25 USD. Then returned the Tamper in working order to him. I will get the old one working and put it on a Water pump or other tool some day. Great to see you cover the Valve issue I encountered.

Great video. Working on a lawn mower which I believe has no compression. Will try your way by spinning the blade. Question: What kind of compression gauge tester is used. Bought one at Harbor Freight Tools which is to test gas engines like car. Can this be used to test a lawn mower. I got a reading of 30 psi. Used gauge on another good running mower and got a reading of 50 psi. Seen many videos, but no one has ever stated, well this is the correct compression gauge tester that you use to test lawn mowers. Also can this gauge be used to test weed eaters. Thank you for your answer.
