I'm so glad you agree! There is a good time and place for it but when they are just trying to communicate with you. It can really disappoint some kids!

I'm so glad you like the French series. It's a niche for sure but there are certainly a few moms who are very interested. We do like the Language Together books. They were a huge confidence booster last year. Now we are delving into the world of small class on-line French with The Well Trained Mind Academy.

So many good, practical tips here! I've always been overwhelmed by the 501 Verbs books--the tab idea is so simple but now that time isn't so scary (I'm a non-native speaker with only a little formal study of Spanish so I need all the help I can get). 😄 Edit - tome, not time!

Thank you so much! I started homeschooling because of French, and while I learned a TON from KZfaq homeschool moms, there was nothing on foreign languages to help me generate ideas. So I thought, "well, what the heck" and started this channel. If you are interested in anything in particular or have any questions I can answer, let me know. I made this step-by-step intro video at the request of another mom.

Hi Jill, So happy to find your channel. Thank you for sharing your advice and experience. I'm crazy about languages. My son is 11 and he has been learning Spanish for several years now. I'm all for immersion method. My only request for his Spanish teachers was ZERO English. Here is the question I have for you - How important do you think writing is? He hates writing (in any language). Any time I try to start a simple Spanish workbook with him, he fights it. Shall I just drop it? Another problem we ran into is that he has only one hour with a Spanish native-speaker a week (my Spanish is too basic for my son). So, he keeps forgetting simple words that he knew very well when he was younger but does not use much now like a name for an animal for example or a body part such as eyebrow. Would you have a suggestion for this? I was thinking perhaps there is an app with a word bank of random words where he can do a review for 5 min a day. Is there anything like that? Thanks so much!

and I loved your suggestion of 501 verbs book. I found one for Spanish and I'm going to check it out today at Barnes and Noble. Thanks again

Hi! Thanks so much for your nice comments! Let's see, when it comes to writing and just hating it in any language, I don't think I'm the best person to answer that specifically BUT I will tell you that we all have our preferences and writing is commonly the most difficult because you have to come up with not only the word but the spelling on your own. That is hard for all of us. I have Morgan do unscripted sentences. She has a bunch of words in her word bank and her memory and I ask her to write me three sentences with any words she wants. This tends to liberate kids who don't like the structure of writing. Also, you can use the flash cards and have a game of sentence building -- sort of like those poetry magnets for your fridge but with flash cards. See if you son would like to build sentences by arranging the flashcards in order. This may be a lot of work on your part since you will need a LOT of flashcards. But you can also make them as you go. When Morgan needs a word, I just write it on a card and she has it from then on. As far as forgetting words, if we don't use them, we don't remember them and that's ok. They will come back faster later on when re-introduced. What I do is have Morgan keep a vocab book so she has all the words she has learned in one place. If you son doesn't like writing, you could write them or type them and make a binder with vocab sectioned off by people, places, clothes, house, school words. And you can quiz each other occasionally to keep more words sharper and put them deeper into memory. I hope this helps!!!

@@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy Thank you so much for your response. I guess, I did not use the correct word. By writing I meant knowing the spelling. How important is it for them to know how to write/spell words correctly? My hope that my son will outgrow this issue and it will be easier for him to learn Spanish spelling when he is older...

I have relatively unpopular views on spelling - especially when it comes to the annoying and most difficult words and grammar of English. It's not lost on me that my daughter finds French easier to spell, even with the quirky silent letters that are written and not spoken. I treat writing and spelling differently and I care very little if my daughter can spell well at her age. I focus on grammar, writing and reading. When Morgan writes, I rarely correct her spelling. I know... a lot of teachers would have a heart attack. But I come from a school where every student was a foreigner and we all spelled poorly! We grew up and became doctors and lawyers and business people, artists and engineers -- and multi-lingual. We came out fine. And I'm telling you, some of our spelling was atrocious! But it comes in time. I wonder if our kids' kids will even need to know how to spell. When I learned French and later Arabic, the emphasis was on communication. If I can read what Morgan writes, she is successful. If I can understand what she is saying even if a sentence is clumsy, she is successful. The structure will come. I've had heated debates with language teachers and even dropped a German class in college over it. I'm the annoying person who will tell you I have gotten all over the world with broken words -- and I've gotten jobs simply because putting the words out there for many employers who need help translating in a meeting is important and they are more concerned there is a smile on the foreign customer's face and that they are impressed we even try to communicate with them than if my spelling is perfect. Getting the grammar right might be important on the Foreign Service language exam but not for general communication. But I'm the weird mom who has pulled her kid out of school just to teach her languages! If Morgan can manoeuvre the world with languages as she needs them, that is success. If she needs to spell well for a job, she will figure it out. If her grammar is good, her vocab robust and her guts to speak are strong, she will succeed. Do everything you can to make that Spanish fun. The rest will come. And let me know how you get on. I'm interested!
