It's now time for the second part of my series about the weaving of a baby blanket using pickup sticks. In the first part, I talked about the warping of the project and I introduced the pickup sticks patterns. With this video, I'm going this finish the weaving of the blanket and give more information about the pattern. #rigidheddle #weaving #loom

THE PATTERN
I have created a blog post about the weaving of this project where I provide all the details about the pattern for free. Here's the link: curly-n-yarny.com/weaving-a-ba...
THE YARN
For this project, I'm using Lion Brand's yarn from their Truboo collection. The yarn is actually made of 100% rayon from Bamboo. I used 3 different colors:
- 1 ball of Mauve (purple)
- 1 ball of Silver (light grey)
-3 balls of Slate (dark grey)
Here's where you can get the same yarn: shrsl.com/3yk0g
MY LOOM
In the video, you can see my Ashford rigid heddle loom. Its width is 32" (80cm) and I love it! If you are in the US and looking for the same loom, The Woolery has it! Here's their website: woolery.com/ashford-rigid-hed...
PICKUP STICKS
Are you in need of pickup sticks? The Woolery has them in all different shapes and sizes. Here's the link: woolery.com/weaving/weaving-t...

This is such a beautiful blanket. I’m sure your friends loved it. The way in which you have used the pick up pattern really makes it. Thank you for explaining everything so clearly. 😊

I haven't used pick up sticks very much o. Rigid heddle as i got distracted by multi shaft looms, but could you switch the second stick for a heddle bar ( a stick with home made stirng heddles on it) and keep it at the back of the loom, and that way not have to take it in and out? Or would it still be an issue? I feel like I've seen patterns with stick+heddle bar at the back. The blanket looks great! And your varnished loom is such a beauty 😍

This a very good point! And I believe that yes, it would be possible to use a heddle bar 😊 the only thing I see, is that I would need a few of them since that I'm alternating the part of the warp where I'm doing the floats. It would take more time at the beginning to set everyting up, but then I wouldn't have to take sticks in and out of the project while weaving!

Your channel was recommended by another weaver, and I’m really enjoying watching and learning! My 15” loom is ordered and on its way, so I’m devouring as much info as I can to get ready! Questions: it comes with an 8 heddle. I’m ordering a 10, but do I need another to begin with, or is that plenty to learn with? Can the Schacht Cricket 15 use two heddles of the same size at one time? When buying pickup sticks, do I order them the same length as my loom width? Do I buy chunky pickup sticks, or the smaller thickness? So many questions I don’t even know how to ask, but I’m sure I’ll figure it out by practicing. I love this baby blanket, and hope I get to this skill level very soon! For now, I must finish my hand quilting! I love your smile and cheery disposition!

Thank you so much for you nice comment and congrats on your new loom ❤️ I hope you'll love weaving as much as I do. Here's some answers to your questions. For the extra heddles, this really depends on the yarn and projects that you will want to weave. I believe that you could already do a lot with your 8 and 10 dpi heddles. I don't own a cricket, so I cannot say for sure if it will have the double heddle block, but most new looms nowadays do have it. For the pick-up sticks, it's better to buy them just a little bit bigger than the weaving width of your loom. This way, you can get a hold of it when you have a warp that is the full width of your loom. But it shouldn't too long that it doesn't fit proprely on the loom. When I bought mine, I remember it being well labelled that it was to use for a 32" loom. I hope this helps!

I love this blanket so much but I don’t have a rigid heddle loom is there a way to do it in my 4 shaft or 8 shaft loom?

That's a good question! It shouldn't be hard to replicate the color patterns. The pickup stick pattern is where it would get more complicated. Maybe a lace pattern could be what would ressemble it the most!
