We continue this Collector Conversation with Mark as he discusses how he discovered what draws him in once he found his path in the collecting journey. He also talks fitting watches into your distinct style.
Mark Cho is no stranger to building out a distinct and individualistic look. As a founder of The Armoury and with the acquisition of the British brand Drake's, he is deep in the world of styling and bespoke fashion. This dedication to perfecting an image using clothes and accessories of course led him to the world of watches and so he sits down with Tim to discuss his collection and fashion philosophies.
Mark's collection is expansive and eclectic. From Grand Seiko to Patek Philippe, he's picked up a little of everything on his way. Tim and him discuss what got him started collecting and anecdotes along the way, such as having a hand in designing a limited F.P. Journe Chronometre Resonance. He also outlines how he likes to have individualistic influence over his pieces like his custom-made Patek Philippe Nautilus 3800.

Such an amazing interview Tim and Mark! Loved seeing the GS VFA, such a rare piece. I own a 1970 GS 6155-8000 HiBeat Special, only slightly less accurate than the VFA but much more beautiful in my opinion. Keep up the good work guys!

Great video Tim, loved the genuineness...regarding watch size,I also found height if the wearer makes a difference, tall guys with lanky wrist could pull off a 40mm or 42mm, with short wearers, it would stand out overbearingly...:)

It was an interesting conversation about independents. I almost see the high end indies like coach builders in the automotive industry from yesteryear, taking an already stunning vehicle and making it truly unique and personal.

That's a really great comparison. I don't know much about cars but I do enjoy engineering. A friend of mine, Gianluca Migliarotti, produced a great documentary called Driving Dreams that you might enjoy. It's about coach builders back before there was CAD. They're sort of like great blacksmiths, it was a very by-hand endeavour. Now they're retiring and passing away so my friend wanted to record those guys before they go.

I am an occasional pocket watch wearer, never considered the wearing one dorky especially when using a nice thin antique watch chain. I always thought it looks kind of elegant and discreet paired with a nice vest. After wearing one for a while though one realizes why wristwatches supplanted them.

I love pocket watches but typically it’s worn with a waistcoat or vest. So unfortunately I’m not able to wear my pocket watches outside of formal attire.

I truly have small wrist. 6 inch and narrow. the top part is about 43mm wide. It’s really hard finding a nice size watch. Almost everything hangs over a tad. The biggest watch I own is a skx007 and it’s just a tad over depending how it sits. I hate having tiny wrist. My only saving grace will be when I get my explorer. 36mm is perfect!

Have you ever tried 34mm? The modern Rolex Date 34 wears a little larger than you expect and it's awesome, too. I had one but sold it to a colleague. I do miss it. There are also a lot of other great vintage 34mm and under pieces that are worth checking out like the Patek 96 or the Jaeger 2638.

That 3800 looks remarkably like the 3800p auctioned off at Phillips for 212,000 CHF. Are these dials something you can request from the factory on any Nautilus after the fact?

So my 3800 is very much not a 3800p, it's just a stainless steel. The rules for swapping out dials used to be much more relaxed and would vary a lot from country to country. That's partly why there's a bit of mystery around the PP 3448 Senza Luna where the moonphase aperture was missing. A few of those may well have been a dial swap by PP or their agents in Italy. My dial was swapped in HK, I have the receipt for the dial and servicing by the local agent. It was done I think in the 90s. I do wish I had the original dial, though, the regular 3800 is pretty great, too.

O and to more directly answer your question: These days, no, at most you can replace the dial with the same configuration the watch was born with.

Why pocket watches wont make a comeback? They already did.. Its called a smartphone We evolved from pocket watches because it was easier to look at your wrist than to reach in your pocket and pull it out Now non watch wearers can pull out their phone and look at very accurate time without need for service etc Watch wearers have the time on their wrist There's very little need/want for them nowadays aside from just buying them for their sheer beauty and craftsmanship

You are right, the smartphone has replaced the pocket watch and even adopted that subtle "out-of-the-pocket glance" action that a pocket watch user might use.

Mark and Aaron..yes we all own and love smartphones..but for myself when I wear a three piece suit in the fall and winter I always wear a pocket watch..why? I just love the look plus I am old school....

I would say target 40 (maybe 42?) mm watches. But frankly best thing is to try a watch and see how it feels on the wrist

A really tall watch is closer to the eye than the wrist so by perspective it looks larger

Hi, thanks for watching! In Tim's case it's The Armoury's City Hunter 2 jacket. In my case, it's part of a bespoke suit by Tailor CAID, a Japanese tailor that we host in our store in New York.

Holy Trinity watches has become like the Top 40 music industry; a repeatable design formula meant to move volume. Indes are like the 80s with far more artistic expression and risk taking. Voutilainen and H Moser Have a lot in common with David Byrne and so many others.

I have to take responsibility for that one ... I was excited to meet Tim and so I gave him a little gift of that particular jacket. It's a soft, jersey knit jacket, meant to be worn loose and a little rumpled. Might not have been as obviously sharp as a tailored jacket but I thought it suited Tim's confident and quirky style quite well. Personally, I don't mind a few wrinkles but to each their own.

But 75% of the men that pass through the Armoury, claiming to have small wrists, might in fact, be correct, as they probably represent .0000000000000000001% of the broader population. You might be interacting with a small-wristed demo? I mean, imagine if a tailor working exclusively with the NBA said "75% of my customers say they are taller than average. That couldn't possibly be correct..."

You are correct, well spotted. The population sampled is very important. I actually dug into this with my survey, trying to account for race and nationality as well. The claim to small wrists is to me an interesting quirk of people's understanding of their wrists because actually ... a lot of people have normal sized wrists once they measured themselves, they just perceived themselves to have small wrists. I mentioned this in a comment below ... it's one of the jackets that I sell at the shop that I gave to him as a gift. It's meant to be a bit soft and wrinkled but of course not to everyone's taste. I think Tim looked at ease in it which is perhaps the most important element.
