Both the W220's I have owned have been fabulous and cheap to run. Why some people dislike them is beyond me.

i dont get it either. i just purchased one in black with ivory leather, looks like a Dictator's car - who wouldn't want that image.

Had my 320CDI for 17 years but finally forced to stop using it because of the London ULEZ. I enjoyed driving it so much I've kept it for two years off road as the offered prices are so ridiculously low.. The repairs are not so expensive if you get a good one as they are built to last and there are now plenty of second hand parts around. To make it affordable you just need to use the right specialist garage and to stay well away from the main dealers.

It’s such a shame that London are expanding the ULEZ zone! It doesn’t make sense to push the production of new cars by forcing people out of older ones, in my view that is doing far more environmental harm than if you were to keep your Mercedes on the road!

The reason for the size of the steering wheel is that in case the power steering fails you will have more control if you have a big steering wheel that gives you more leverage.

In my case, I was to the point to buy an V60 from 2020, but I wasn’t convinced at all. I love the W220 since 1998, so I decided to own one keeping it well in all aspects for having one to live the real sensation of having a 100% S-class

I've always loves the W220 - one day I will find one but scared to own one.

No need to be scared. There´s nothing fundamentally wrong with this model,it´s the previous owners who are to blame if something goes terribly wrong.Just buy a good one with a service history,no matter what year or mileage.

The reason people don't buy these is because they cost an arm and a leg everytime something goes wrong. If you can afford to fix it you afford to buy a newer one

I can definitely see your point! The 3.2 CDI seems to be a pretty reliable lump and the car itself provides very good comfort, but I guess if you’re looking for an S-Class you’d maybe spend a bit more and get a newer model 👍

No,they don´t.If you are excited about your car, then you are willing to learn and do the maintenance and repairs yourself. These are reliable cars if they are well taken care of,and also very much DIY cars.I don´t see the point in getting a newest possible,it doesn´t guarentee anything.A well kept 1988 car(just about any brand)is a better choice than a neglected W221/W212 etc. And what do W221 cost when it goes bad?If someone wants to own a reliable S-class car,W220 is not a bad choice.Horrendous faults with W221 early years petrol engines, unlike W220 legendary W112/W113 engines. And these W220 diesel engines are also superb.
