Sometimes companies or teams will try to survive without opening new job position, since they are worried about the overhead and additional headache of bringing new unknown people in their team. People busy with what they are already doing aren't always so motivated to be forced to use time guiding and teaching new people or managing larger teams with more members. It becomes easier for them, if they already know a person, who could start and become more easily a productive member of the team without additional workload to others already busy enough. If they know a good fit to their team, it can help to create a job position to be filled. Many job positions can be filled or even created without making them publicity open.

@@travexplorefinland I would ask how unique or specific for Finland these things are? I have worked in Finnish universities, in small start-ups and larger Finnish companies and also in international large companies. My impression, at least as a technical specialist, was that it's not so different in Finland compared to other countries. Ok, the local language is different, but otherwise fairly similar process in USA and European countries. I don't know much about other places.

I haven't worked in any other country except India and Finland so I'm not sure. But I would say the work culture or job situation would be very different when, for example if someone is working in India in a Finnish company, as against living and also working in Finland..

@@travexplorefinland One thing to notice that the Finnish corporate cultures have not been homogeneous or remained the same. I have experienced very old fashioned hierarchical corporate culture in Finland in my youth. It was very old-fashioned and rare even at that time. It was my summer job at the start of my university studies. It was an amazing experience. A kind of trip back in time. I had already had some experience in some other companies so had something to compare with.

This is so informative. From my personal experience I can relate that job search and study must be continued parallelly. But nowadays referrals and sources are also important if someone can inform you about a vacant position then it gets much easier to get that job.

Thanks for sharing your views 😊 yes and especially in Finland, people trust referrals more than hiring a stranger! But that doesn't mean we keep our learnings on hold..

@@travexplorefinland One proposed theory of why referrals and personal contacts are so preferred in Finland is based on the size. In a smaller country the networks in almost any professional field are small enough that even though not everyone knows everyone else, they are more likely to know someone who knows either both person or at least can give reasonably reliable information of the person who is interested of the job. The network of trust has less links that in a bigger place.
