This might sound odd… but I actually cast my spinner rod, then set my hand near the bail, and when I want to slow or stop my cast I’ll put my thumb on the line and flip the bail with my fingers. Might be weird but it felt natural and I made it a habit and it works so I’m not going to change it lol.

The most overlooked factor when it comes to backlashing is how much line you have on your spool. If you're using monofilament or fluorocarbon don't overfill your spool because it'll have too much angular momentum. If you're using braid you can fill it all the way up to the top because it's lighter. A lighter spool makes your brakes work more effectively and allows you to turn them down which not only decreases backlashes, but increases distance as well.

I try to get the timing just right. I have all the settings just right per bait I’m using. yet still manage to make a nice home for some birds when I use anything under 3 oz. I know it’s going to take some major practice. But damn lol. I should probably change my line to braided or higher tensile strength filament.

I run my brakes wide open cuz I also use my thumb for control

My issue is being able to cast it further than 15-20 ft. No matter how I adjust my knobs. I’ve been practicing non stop I. My backyard and at a lake the past few days and just cannot dial it in. If I try and whip it too fast my bait(excluding lures) flys off and I get a rats nest. I don’t wanna give up but fuck I’m close to going back to spinning reels

A couple months ago I bought a baitcaster. A St. Croix avid casting rod with an abu garcia revo s. I'm pretty sure I'm adjusting the brakes correctly, however sometimes when I cast, halfway through the cast my lure with stop mid air, jerk the line and sometimes my line will snap, I've lost a few lures from this and I'm not totally sure why it's happening, I heard you can't cast a baitcatser as with much umph as a spinning rod and that's why it might be happening bc it mostly happens when I try to do a harder cast. Yesterday I was on my kayak and I was using it all day and I finally thought I was getting it down and then I casted it overhead and my lure stopped midair and my line jerked halway through and my line snapped and lost my favorite rattletrap 😢, ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVICE! I wanna keep using it but I don't wanna keep on loosing my lures

Best way to figure out how to setup your baitcaster is use it for hours and hours I just figured them out myself didn't have a phone till I was 16 and got my first baitcaster at 12 didn't have youtube yet haha now I've gotten really good at setting them up also been using them for 10 plus years now haha
