Part three of a 6-part series on how to rebind your books into the penguin clothbound classic aesthetic. This also works for rebinding books into any aesthetic you like! Sorry my narration is a little choppy on this one (maybe watch sped up a bit - talking and making simultaneously I'm obviously still getting the hang of).

Thank you so much for these detailed video tutorials - your bookshelf is absolutely gorgeous with all these rebinds & it inspired me to rebind a lot of my ugly paperback books, although I haven't chosen a specific aesthetic to stick to design-wise but I absolutely love the uniform aesthetic you've chosen.

I wish i could also do this but where i am at right now i dont have time or motivation to do it. Maybe when i have a big collection of my favourite books i will make this my hobby! I already have tons of hobbies like painting reading book journaling and what not! And i barely get time to do one of those things once or twice a week! But i sooo soooo love this idea! And i love the cloth bound books even more!

Your tutorials are just what I have been looking for. A modern take on book binding, using new tools and materials. I hav e xsome experience in traditional book blinding methods but feel the need to use all the tools at my disposable, such as my electronic cutting machine. I am hoping you will be demonstrating how you use you Cricut to apply your book cover designs. I can’t wait. Thank you very much for sharing your expertise.

Yes! I’m going to post six tutorials in all and the last two will be general how-to beginners guide to the cricut, and then designing the patterns in their Design Space app.

LOVE this. Thank you again for sharing. I have been waiting for your tutorial even though I’ve watched others hahaha. Future request-can you do a video on thicker books like you said wouldn’t use the book board for the spine? I’m not planning to tackle any of my thick books for a while, but for future reference!

Love your TikTok’s and so glad you’re making tutorials can’t wait for the rest of them. Question: if you want a “leather” look instead of fabric but don’t want to use leather is there a specific type of faux leather to use that you can still use htv with?

Was hoping to clarify! At 14:40 you say for the boards you would just cut the length of the text block with 3mm added to top and bottom only. but not to the outside edge correct? this is SUCH an amazing tutorial! I can’t wait to try it!

Hi! Love these videos! Already bought the supplies for bookbinding and will definitely follow these videos again for help! Question - how wide would you say is “too thick” a spine has to be before you can’t use bookboard and, instead, should use cardstock?

Those purple tools in your videos!!! I need them in my life haha I didn’t see the thin tee you used for spacing or the small right angle triangle to cut the corners of the book cloth evenly in your link tree. Do you have links for those by chance?

Thank you so much for making these tutorials!! I was wondering if you adjust your case edge width from 3mm in order to make all of your books uniform on your shelf? In your posts, it looks like all of your books books are around the same height after rebinding. My bookshelf has a lot of height variation which drives me crazy so I'd want to try to make them more uniform

One question, with the second method of just gluing the board directly onto the bookcloth, do you leave 3mm overlap around every edge from the text block, or just the top and open/outer side (i.e. don’t leave an extra 3mm where the spine is going to go)?

How do you bind it if it's thicker? Do you just not include the center spine piece?
@kaitlynwalls9507
@kaitlynwalls9507 20 күн бұрын
for bigger hardcover books, would it work if you just didn't glue down the spine? When you opened CC at 3:11, it looks like the spine isn't attached so it has that flexibility.

Hi, so I have a question about book cloth. I saw on your tiktok that you buy from Book Supply Co. I tried to look for a way to contact them on their website but had no luck so I figured I’d ask you since you have experience with them. I’m looking to buy a yard of book cloth from them but I’m a little confused on the size options. I see they have an option for “continuous yardage” or “1 cut yard” and I’m not sure i understand the difference. If i do the 1 cut yard will it be cut into smaller pieces instead of being a full cohesive yard of book cloth?

Hello, thanks for your videos. Is it possible to do the designs with the machine cricut joy ?
@ThatsMyBookshelf
@ThatsMyBookshelf 10 ай бұрын
If you want to make the design with that outline box around the front and back of the case, then the cricut joy will be too small. I thought it would work because i thought I had read somewhere that it could cut up to 6 inches wide, but the widest cut it makes is 4.5inches. The majority of my books that I’m rebinding have an outline box of at least 4.75 and go up to 6.1 depending on how big the book is. If you just want to make cute random designs and don’t want the outline box that the pattern is in then the joy could work. Otherwise you will need to upgrade to the bigger machine, I think the current cheapest option is the air 2?

which thickness of standard board do you use? I'm on Hollanders site filling a cart.
@ThatsMyBookshelf
@ThatsMyBookshelf Жыл бұрын
I use the 0.08 Davey Board custom cut long grain. I'm pretty sure all their options will work, but this is what I've been using. Hollander's has also always been very helpful whenever I've needed to reach out about questions for their supplies.

Could you tell me what bookcloth you used? My daughter bought the allure bookcloth from hollanders, rebound a book via your awesome tutorials but the cricut HTV will not stick. It initially sticks but peels right off 😩. Any suggestions?
@ThatsMyBookshelf
@ThatsMyBookshelf Ай бұрын
Oh is that the sort of coated one? Super smooth, not really a cloth texture? It’s the worst I hate working with it. I’ve had so many issues with HTV with the coated book cloths. I mainly use the linen book cloth from bookcraft supply co, the company is linked in my linktree, and they have a ton of colors to choose from. They also ship internationally too if that’s something you need 😊

It is coated with soe sort of acrylic? It does have a texture but definitely more of a slippery one. She's on the other site now picking out colors! Thank you for responding.

At what thickness of a text block do you recommend thinking about a different spine material other than the chipboard?
@ThatsMyBookshelf
@ThatsMyBookshelf Жыл бұрын
I would say over 2 inches for sure, and probably 1.5. I probably should have done a different spine for my ACOWAR/ACOSF books looking back on it, and when I do my next rebind of them I'll use a softer spine material for the whole set. Some other things that can effect it are the grain direction of your book itself. Some paperbacks are printed short grain (so they aren't floppy when you open them) and in general don't bend as easily. I have a few books with the chipboard spine piece that are >1.5inches thick, but open just fine because the pages are long grain so they have that flop to them.
