Ian worked and studied at a bronze casting foundry as a young man, where he learned to create models, armatures, molds and finished sculptural artwork in all mediums and finishes. Ian is fascinated by the artistic process of sculpture. He brings this knowledge to his car customizations, to his TV show audience, and now he brings it to you, his growing KZfaq audience.
The backstory...
Ian has decided to lower this VW Beetle 6 inches to get it to the ground and start radically modifying this beat up 1968 VW Beetle, but like most things that were once going to find the fate of the crusher, he once again proves you can do some amazing things in your garage with some imagination, fearlessness and a willingness to make mistakes as you create. 🥴
His fascination stems from the seemingly limitless customization opportunities for this vehicle. Join Ian on a wild ride through his mind 👽 as he envisions then fabricates his most radical ideas to date.

Ian is the only person i get giving a tutorial, everyone else just goes through the motions. Explaining having a feel for machinery and tools also prevents a lot of injuries by knowing how each action needs a reaction.👍

That long bar with the steel wheels on it is called a Johnson Bar. We used to use them all the time moving heavy equipment. 👍👍 The bug is looking great.

Ian is a lot like many of us who improvise and make do with what we can and not necessarily how a textbook might instruct. I enjoy these casual visits into a workshop, as if I'm just a visitor who dropped by to just chat and watch. There are few makeover shows like this anymore that go into slow detail to show step by step how to fabricate. Instead of hours of slowly fabricating, other shows will condense this into just a one-hour show from start to finish.

A little tip that might help with the fiberglass body filler...add a little paint reducer to your mix, it will help smooth it out and make it easier to spread.

My CDO was crying out to me with that rear fender strap. The fender is so smooth and pretty, i was hoping that strap would be on the underside of the running board with hardware on the tire side of the fender. Like a 53-56 Ford pickup. I'm anticipating the door opening process. So fun to follow along at home. Your building of stuff is like watching a calm Bob Ross painting come together.

Your little tool that came with the property is called a Johnson bar. Riggers, fitters, boilermakers use them to move heavy objects. It all about the leverage.

Running board looks great! I've been picturing how sweet it was going to look with it tied in. I've been a sheet metal worker for 34 years and I was thinking when you traced where the rear fender came down that I would have just cut it a inch and a half longer and bent it up inside the fender and riveted it to the fender. There for the bracket you made would have been part of the whole thing. But it works either way lol Love it I can picture the finish look and it's going to be sweet

The tool you pulled out to lower the car is called a J- bar. It's purpose was used for cases in grocery stores to lift and bump them in place it was also used to pick up gondolas those are the stands of shelving that groceries are placed on we to put rollers under them to move them out of the way to lay tile in the stores This way you don't have to unload them. Pretty cool tool and now it's job has changed to lift cars up to get the jack out.nice running boards Take care.

I never want your videos to end... ! I have been finding my projects are better and more fun adopting your methods. The envisioning tool is one pivotal technique to fast track a concept. Going fast and loose is so much more fun too! Love this build, the progress is a massive transformation with the fender/running board combo. The HORN SOUND on the trolley jack was a perfect audio envisaged edit tool! 😂🎉❤😊

Definitely the coolest shop teacher ever. I’ve proven repeatedly that I can’t do even the most basic woodworking. I want to try my hand at some basic metal work. Just because. You do a great job of showing and explaining the whys as you go. It makes me think if I put the time and effort into it, I can make what I want.

You can get an air over hydraulic ram for your engine hoist a little more than $100 at Harbor freight. Saves a lot of jacking around...

We carried 2 of those wheeled pry bars, (aka Johnson bars) on board the C-130's. Used to move/ position cargo in the airplane. Rated at 2500 lbs...

Thank you once again for the hours of entertainment and the tips and tricks I pick up every time I watch you. I own a Hot Rod version of the 1966 Batmobile. It's sitting on a 1977 Lincoln Continental frame and power plant. The motor is tired and needs updating. Man do I wish I could get you to do your magic on it so I could use it more than I do now. For now I'll dream but hopefully some day I could have your expertise and talent recreate my car for me. Motor, Paint and body mods, especially the body mods!.

Not sure if Ian stated where he got those lift things he had under all four tires but those things were damn cool, for those of us who have garages that wouldn’t accommodate a traditional lift that definitely gets the vehicle up off the ground high enough and secure enough to get underneath it. I find sometimes while watching I’m like Jack Nicholson’s Joker “ those toys where does he get such wonderful toys” . The running boards look f’ing awesome on the car, they tied it together on those lifts but once Ian set the car on the ground Ian was right it looked even lower than it did before. Can’t wait to see the door issue tackled, and as always beauty job on the camera work Jamie.

VeeDubs are the cat's pajamas! I really dig the unconventional mix of baja, hotrod and custom in your Beetle. For as wild and weird things might appear at this point, the finished product always turns out super cool upon completion. Highly original and creative, highly skilled craftsman here folks. Seems a pretty decent feller too, I'd say.

I am blown away by all your projects. The work you do is amazing. In the late 60’s and 70’s we used to tear it up down on the desert. We had a second home in a little town called Wrightwood. Skied in the winter and ripped it up on the desert in the summertime. I could tell you some stories. Well keep on keeping the dream alive.

Liking the running boards the bug is taking shape. I've only been to one Big Bug car show year's ago in Vallejo California fair grounds and I didn't know that you can build a kustom bug to look many different ways styles year's makes. There was so much to see it was hard to take in. I took a few picture's. I was driving my little 1968 4 door Toyota carona I built at the time I had it parked out side the show but I seen people checking out my ride. I didn't say anything I just know I must have did a good job by people checking out my little car.

I've always been a fan of the old VW Beetles. I bought a 72 several years back. It was rusted and needed tons of work. I ended up selling it because I moved away for a new job. Last March, I found a 63 Baja. It's pretty clean so I plan to get this one on the rode and have fun with it. I've always been impressed with Ian's work and his approach, so when I saw he was going to work on this Beetle, I tuned in for some inspiration. I haven't missed an episode with this car. I'm curious to see what he'll do about some of the areas, like the front fenders, that will have considerably thick walls due to the layers of fiberglass/kitty hair. I'd be tempted to get the outside form I wanted, then use them as my master to make a mold with. Then use the mold to make new fenders with at proper thicknesses. I'm staying tuned!

I have a tool that looks like that. It was past down from my Dad, he always referred to it as a chalking tool.

Makes sense. Draw a line with chaulk where you want to cut your brick, then use your tool. Lay brick on bed of sand, put tool on line, hit with mallet, viola' cut brick! I always called it a brick chisel, but it has many uses. By the way, Ian. Nice johnson😂👍
