There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

As a scientist, I will say the journal charging at minimum a grand to publish your work is the norm. The most respected journals (Nature, the Lancet, all Frontiers journals, etc) will charge you to publish your peer reviewed research. It's such a weird setup, considering most only publish online, so it's not as if there's printing fees... So, in summary, paying journals to publish your research is normal, and if anything being paid to publish research in a journal is suspicious in science.
@Church9456
@Church9456 8 ай бұрын
Agreed. Additionally, it's not the most unimaginable thing for regional drug companies to help pay for the fees. The companies get good will in the community, and the scientists can pay for publication. It's not that strange... not to say that this stuff is not suspicious when taken in total. Also, pre-print servers aren't necessarily bad. They do help a lot with professional science. However, Robert and Co. are right in that there are asshats that will utilize the system for their own gain. This stuff is a bit more nuanced than presented, but that's not BtB's fault. These things would only be known by career scientists.

@Church9456 I absolutely agree. I think there's some issues with wider reporting. I have noticed papers and websites did start explaining the meaning of preprint and subsequent lack of peer review now. But in the early pandemic, it was all panic and rushed (like everything, to be honest). Pre-print servers are themselves a good thing, I'd say, but it's important people understand what they are. The ones I've used have made it very clear as soon as you're on their page that everything you see is not peer reviewed and are quite obvioud about it. But if someone reports a study there as fact, then they're part of the problem. Scientific journalism should be the bridge between the specialised niche world and the general public. But of course, none of this helps if people literally falsify data, which unfortunately can make it through peer review sometimes.

As a scientist, I'd like to point out another couple reasons why bad studies like these proliferate: 1. Pre-print archives typically have no peer review or quality controls 2. Putting preliminary research on preprint archives is standard practice, so it's harder to spot when it's being abused - it might be better if these archives were closed to the public 3. Peer review is typically done by a small group of people, and due to the size of that small group they will often know each other - it's typically done anonymously but there's only so much you can do when only a dozen people exist in that field 4. There's no money in replication studies, so these often don't get done - but they're crucial to science's self-correction mechanisms. 5. Studies are published in major journals mainly if they'll draw attention - a lot of good studies are very important and useful, but they're not interesting so they end up in third-rate journals. 6. The general lack of science education in the US makes the general populace extremely vulnerable to disinformation via "studies", as news hosts, TV Doctors, etc., do all the time 7. The whole process is generally largely unstandardized on a systemic level, resulting in a lot of reliance on local IRBs and the often weak journal oversight for quality control.

Without watching beyond 4:00 yet; Regardless of the question whether it's effective or not for Cvid, the human variant of horse paste is on the essentials list of the WHO and is one of the safest medicine ever with very few documented cases of severe side effects over the decades. The very basic point should be, why not entertain the doctors that jumped on the first research and allow off label use as is almost always done in similar situations? For example in Australia the off label use ban was lifted afterwards. Bans like that aren't meant for situations like this.

Not sure what this has to do with anything other than some people tend to take themselves WAY too seriously while others have no problems making ourselves the butt of jokes.

I'm kind of curious - I've been plugged into the Ivermectin/Vaccine discussion since 2019 due to my job - one that is outside of research and medical care, but is adjacent in that we supported several platforms tracking health data during several "Bubbles" trying to do the "Keep Calm and Carry On" approach. The thing I'm curious about is whether or not we'll have an episode in the future - a mini-sode perhaps - about the studies published by Pfizer et,al that seemingly misrepresented the effectiveness of the vaccine, or rather how the vaccine was effective not whether it was. Remember after the different mRNA and Attenuated vaccines came out the claims were that effectively we "Solved COVID" and vaccinated persons effectively had immunity from the virus, and we could go back to normal...well, the specific language in the studies tended to be along the lines that the vaccines "Reduced Hospitalizations" - i.e.: They reduced the severity of COVID infections, not that they necessarily prevented infection (I'm still not clear on whether they do or don't in fact, do the combination of masking and vaccination to be safe) If you ask me, that sounds like a real bastard move to not use clear and concise language in a research paper that you know is going to be used as the basis to sell a drug worldwide and would lead to other reasonable measures - like mask wearing, distancing and isolation - to be completely abandoned.
@SAVarXX
@SAVarXX 8 ай бұрын
kinda leaving out the caveat that the virus immunity part was only if people actually followed medical advice and continued to mask in public even after vaccinated, which they did not, which led to people spreading the virus around to other people who did NOT have the vaccine, which over time caused the virus to mutate and develop resistances to the vaccines; because god forbid someone tries to prevent folks from eating at applebees for 2 more weeks during a global pandemic

Your belief that the vaccines were supposed to “solve Covid” seems curious to me - considering we’ve never eliminated any virus that has an animal reservoir from which to pass the virus back and forth. You seem to be operating on a smallpox sort of wavelength, but that was never a possibility with Covid because even if every human was vaccinated we weren’t vaccinating wildlife.
@KaiTenSatsuma
@KaiTenSatsuma 8 ай бұрын
Oh, that wasn't *my* belief, that was almost every state's government - and the Federal Government - calling it a day, shutting down daily case/death reports and turning off all dashboards that people could use for their own risk assessment once a vaccine was in enough arms. TBF we didn't know - and still to some degree aren't certain - how many infections will/would come from the animal reservoir because we opened up schools first. There are various other SARS/COV viruses in the animal reservoir that don't communicate as readily or as often after all. And I can't think of a better distribution network for a virus than K-12, even better than animals and pets.

Or just an episode of companies that cater specifically to research labs and how much they hike up their prices on products and force us to buy expensive and crappy service agreements for big tools like confocal microscopes etc… because they know the PIs are using grant money and they are up charging the govt. I wonder how many smaller labs working on niche, poorly funded areas, were completely shut down not because their science was bad or useful, but bc of capitalism 😩

The academic publishing industry is a complete scam. They charge researchers to publish their work, and then also charge to read it. Like, imagine if a book publisher charged authors to publish their novels. And researchers don't even see any of the money from access! It's complete bullshit. Like, I'd be happy to pay for access to a paper if I knew some of that money was going back to the people who wrote it. You know, like anything else that's published. Pro tip: if a paper you want to read is behind a paywall, just look up one of the authors. You'll be able to get their email address from the website of the institution they work for, and chances are if you ask nicely they'll just email you the full text.
