This is an even better explanation than a dealership's video. The white board, dry erase markers, magnetic 'lock', tire tread....excellent props. And might I add....handwriting is awesome!!!

I have one of the rare full time 4WD Tahoes with 4 Lo option (2005 Tahoe LT with Autoride suspension). It is amazing in the snow. It’s the Borg Warner 4482. It has full time 4WD (60:40 split) and the 4 Lo button that allows the center diff to lock it to 50:50 torque split. But it has no 2WD option. Sometimes I wish I had the standard transfer case. But, it’s a very unique setup for sure. It’s a similar transfer case to the Borg Warner in the Hummers (BW4484) but mine lacks the 4 Hi (locked center diff) option and the Super Low option some Hummers have (3 speed transfer case).

tom thorn Clarification needed When part time 4 wheel drive is in 4wd high do all 4 wheels pull or only one of the front and one of the rear pull which ever turns easily? Thanks

@@gabrielmartyak4019 Assuming the left and right wheels have unequal traction and the front and rear differentials aren’t lockable, then the it will likely be one on the front and one on the back spinning. If you had a limited slip differential or locking differential, then it is equal side to side. Also, if the traction is equal left-right then you can assume both wheels will spin, even with an open differential. Lots of 4WD cars come with rear locking differentials as part of an offroad package, though they’re often pretty easy to find as aftermarket parts aswell, depending on your vehicle. Locking differentials on the front are rare, because it’s usually so unnecessary to have two differential locks and having just one on the front wheel will cause issues with steering.

If I had to guess I would say full time. If the center diff fails the car won't drive. Vs part time I hear of transfer cases needing to be rebuilt all the time.

Full time. It gives better handling onroad, and for snowy icy conditions you don’t have to switch constantly.

So is 4WD Unlocked essentially All Wheel Drive? I'm trying to figure out the difference between my Range Rover (always 4WD) and normal AWD. This is best explanation I've found yet tho.

AWD is more dependent on computer managed power sent to wheels from what I understand. 4x4 is either differential managed or transfer case so more to do with a mechanical function

@@codyweiler60834WD is more mechanical. It has a HI / Low Transphercase und in the middle the option to split the power 50/50. (with a diff lock or in part time there is no diff so when you are in 4H / 4L it is the same as the lockt centerdiff)

It's a part time 4x4 not full time. Only land cruiser and some fore runners I believe were full time Toyota SUVs

AWD, city driving. Part time 4x4, city driving with some offroading and ability to get yourself unstuck Full time 4x4, offroading. Think of them on a gradient. Most people will never need full time 4x4 unless you're into serious backcountry.
