"Why do they call people 'Guvna'" For the same reason that tradesmen call people 'Boss.' Back in the day, you would have people who were lords of various manors, like Mosley was. But not everyone who had a manor was actually a lord, so you couldn't call them 'Milord,' since they might not be. Nor could you call them 'Sir.' However, a governor was someone who could run a lot of land, but wasn't necessarily noble. From there, it spread out to anyone you were talking to, in the same way that 'boss' did. After all, if you call someone 'Guvna' when they own 1000 Acres of land, you might as well do the same with 500. And if they own that, you might as well do the same with 100. Or 75. Or 50. Or 25. And what about if your'e dealing with a guy who runs a business? Well, you might as well call him 'governor' since he's basically like a manor lord. Well now that he's a 'Guvna,' are you going to not call him that a week later when he asks you to fix his house? Of course not. And so, soon enough, it just becomes a general form of address.

Yep, that's exactly it. He was basically the hottest thing in Hollywood and then tragically died at 31.

Oh wow. This is the first time I've heard the Cable Street story, and there's no way that wasn't the inspiration for the Cable Street Particulars from Discworld - up to and including the people who stormed the office and burned it down. I swear, I don't know that I'll ever find the end of the references in that series.

7:14 It was worse than that -- Lord Haw Haw (and Joyce was the second guy to have that handle) was on Nazi shortwave originating in Hamburg, and they were trying to hit the US East Coast on well-established frequencies. He is in the same boat as Ezra Pound, who was on Italian Fascist shortwave radio aimed at the US and thus transmitted in English. For the broadcasts to Britain, Joyce was on an AM frequency any basic radio of the era could pick up.
